Alcohol use, abuse on the rise in the United States

Quote:
Rates of drinking and alcohol abuse are increasing in the United States, especially among certain groups of people, a new study suggests.

"These increases constitute a public health crisis that may have been overshadowed by increases in much less prevalent substance use [marijuana, opiates and heroin] during the same period," the study authors wrote.

Bridget Grant, of the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and colleagues found that the rate of alcohol use in the United States was 65 percent in 2

Going on my recollections of recent news stores here:

Millennials drink less than predecessor groups (gen x, boomers, traditional).

About four times as many people die in the U.S. each year from alcohol (~80K) as opiates(~20K).

Not that any of this is good.

Leave it to Neop the simpleton to over-simplify.....again....

I don't care about people turning themselves into useless basement dwellers. I just want my government to protect me from having to support useless humans. They obviously aren't going to do that, so yeah, I'll settle for keeping dope illegal.

That's the type of response I'd expect from someone who's a big government conservative that voted for Obama twice.

But it's illegal, it must be far more dangerous than alcohol or prescription drugs

At least I don't have to smell the neighbor's booze while sitting on the porch trying to enjoy the day. (yes, we've had this discussion where others have told me it can't possibly be bothersome.)

A lot of these "on the rise" scares, aren't they just better reporting? That's what I think.

Yup, you just have to worry about the thousands of drunk driving fatalities that occur every year.

Not one of them has hit anywhere near my porch. What I posted was a reality. What you posted is a long probability. Either could affect me as I drive.

Is it your proposal that relaxed laws on public or private use of mj will somehow reduce those fatalities? Not sure you're making a point here.

I actually had a drunk driver knock a porch right off a rental once.

My parents best friends were killed in a head-on by a drunk.

Pot seems more likely to cause highway rear-end collisions if someone stops too quick ahead for a timely reaction, but they'll likely take the back roads when baked.

Actually the discussion was you claiming you could be impaired while sitting in your house from your neighbor smoking, and you claiming it would stink up an entire neighborhood for blocks. To the point you're making now, when my neighbor smoke a cigarette, has a fire, sprays deer off, etc. I can smell it, but you won't see me whining about it.

I'm thankful everyday that I don't drink. My views on alcohol is pretty radical. The heading of this thread does in surprise me in the least. We have a very hypocritical view on alcohol. It's a drug, just like our new "heroin" and opoid epidemic, but alcohol doesn't get the same negative connotation. In fact, it's celebrated by many. Anyone that watches any sports, we are innodated with alcohol, beer, wine commercials.

Never saw any statistics or surveys, but I'd almost guess most people who have marital, financial, emotional or mental issues, alcohol is a contributing factor in a high percentage of cases.
The new "fad" for the millenials is wine and "craft" beers. I see so many 20 somethings that routinely drink nearly every night. A generation ago, it was generally on the weekends with a cheap beer. Now, these kids have money and drink more often. Or at least they appear to have money, many are credit and debit carding themselves into financial ruin.

Alcohol use for the last 4 generation of Americans has been fairly consistent. What are you basing your opinion on?

If it's the same eye test he uses for baseball, it's pretty clear reality is 180 degrees from his stated opinion.
