Officials already have the ability to have a spectator removed from a game. I saw Massillon's principal get thrown out of a playoff game at Hoover a couple months ago. So what's all the whining about?

No strings attached. I invite you to participate in a week of what a high school football official does to get prepared for a Friday game. Our crew is Northern Ohio, however, we cover a large portion of the state.

I'd say the letter has been sent and the parents now know how to act. If the officials continue to dwindle then guess that lets the parents off the hook.

Officials have a role at a sporting event, as do the players, coaches and fans. Each is an important role and need one another to function. But complaining that fans yell and threatening to take their ball and go home unless everyone respects them is a bad look.

They want fans to be told what to do but want immunity from feedback? Nope.

Everyone we throw out gets charged with disorderly conduct. Usually paying $200 makes them act right

Some small towns are like that. If the police get involved, charges will be filed.

What's lost in all of this is the fact that the National Association of Sports Officials conducted a survey of their membership. One of the questions in this survey related to the main issue officials have to deal with and the main reason for those who have left or are leaving the avocation.

The overwhelming response to this question was "fan, parent, and coach abuse." (I contend the coach portion of this is related to youth leagues)

Yet somehow, those people who feel that they have a guaranteed right to yell at officials or feel that officials deserve to be yelled at because they are a part of the game......... dismiss the responses given by 75+% of the respondents for the reasons already given.

Not only do people know our judgement on the floor, court, field, track, mat, or pool is wrong on a nightly basis, they also know that our responses to surveys are wrong as well.

With that...... I'm done with this subject.... gotta go get called some names......

That’s rich. Screaming, cursing and insulting fans aren’t giving “feedback”. You act like they are providing an annual review in which an employees boss gives them a set of goals. You are clearly blind to the problem. If someone gave you that kind of “feedback” at your job you’d want to fight them in the parking lot.

Yep - you got me. You have no idea who I am or what I do but you have identified me perfectly down to where I stand on the field?

I have a different opinion so I am "the problem" LOL Pelosi much?

Sorry for the reality break. Carry on with your conjecture.

You just don’t get it. It’s not a matter of refs always being right. It’s a matter of treating other people with sportsmanship and respect. You apparently don’t care about that.

See how he will mention a Massillon guy getting tossed from the sidelines but he won’t mention when this happens at Fed games. Not one post about the Lake Coaches son getting escorted out of the gym a couple weeks ago. Nothing!!

FW, as a long time poster you certainly can't be surprised at this "selective mentioning" from non2sense.

One good thing on this thread is that more people are getting exposed to non2sense's view of things.

Didn't know about it. Please enlighten us about the situation.

Is the son an adult employed in a leadership position by Lake schools? Because that's what the situation was when a Massillon principal was removed from the sideline. If that is the case then both are unprofessional and embarrassing.

Was the "Massillon guy" - actually a principal- ever reprimanded? Or is that acceptable behavior at Massillon for their administrators?

Where do you come up with this stuff? Where did I or anyone ever endorse unsportsmanlike behavior? I just don't believe yelling a comment at an incompetent ref is unsportsmanlike.

If you scream and berate a ref or invade his personal space - you should get thrown out and/or arrested. But refs are not above being questioned as some have implied on here because the fans just don't know enough.

Knowing the rules and knowing the game are two different things. A good ref knows both.

Questions for the officials on this thread.
Is there any way OHSAA can be proactive in recruiting officials. For example working with local colleges and their student athletes for some type of internship with reffing/umpiring. Maybe have it part of a curriculum for the exercise science majors. Also may include HS seniors to work in JH levels. Could be worth 1/2 credit hour and count towards community service. Also let them see it ain't as easy as it seems.

ringer2, are you wanting refs to be shown good sportsmanship and respect? Are you displaying that with responses to my2sense? I am getting confused...

Some colleges have officiating courses. Some high schools have also adopted officiating programs. I think Zanesville HS has a class devoted to officiating. We are trying to utilize social media, the internet, flyers, and word of mouth to promote the classes. Anything we can do! Also open for new ideas, such as this!

Recruitment isn't the problem, it's retention.

4 of every 5 new officials quit after 2 years.

It you recruit more, even with the same retention (20%) wouldn't there still be MORE officials. Or has math changed?
