Question about former state tournament participants

I know things have changed over the years, so out of curiosity Im asking because I have no idea. I guess only an older coach or parent of a wrestler from many years ago will be able to answer this question: how far back do you have to go to find a wrestler (any division) who absolutely did not step foot on a mat until he was a freshman and by his senior year was a state qualifier? Twenty years? For a state placer, thirty years? For a state champ, forty years? Maybe never in all three cases? Thanks in advance.

Breylon Douglas-Austintown fitch. Just graduated last year, started as a sophomore/ possibly a little freshman year. Placed at state as a senior and now wrestles D1 in college. Im sure there could be more in the upperweights recently. Fun topic.

I would guess there are lots of dudes who started wrestling as Frosh and have made it to state. I graduated 21 years ago, started wrestling as an eighth grader and placed 4th at Districts as a Jr and won the districts as a Sr. That's not exactly what you said, but I was a run of the mill decent wrestler, so I'm sure lots of others have one upped that (especially at the upper weights)

State Champ is tougher. I would be curious to hear those stories.

Columbus West HS has four in the last decade:

Jason Russell won a few matches as a freshman and qualified as a senior in 2010. He went on to be an NCAA D3 qualifier at Heidelberg and is the current head coach at St. Thomas More College.

Paco Quinonez started as a sophomore and qualified as a senior in 2013.

Both Shaw boys at 220 and HWT. Last year. In fact, neither of them was on the varsity team as juniors.

Joe Gadson of Fairfield I believe started as a freshman and ended up a runner up his senior year. That would have been 15 years ago maybe?

Didn't Brian Haimerl do that at Bishop Ready about 20 years ago? Started as a freshman and won a title by his senior year.

Indiana had a kid come out for his first year this year at 285 and he won a state title in his first season.

Past 7 years at Alliance High School had several. All started wrestling as Freshman and ended up being a qualifier or placer.
Adontis Watson placed 6th
Isaiah Watson - Kirksey placed 8th
Alex Leasure placed 7th
Jerrell Martin placed 6th

Joe Ghezzi from Watterson was a D2 state champ in 1987, and started as a freshman. Wrestled a million matches (mostly freestyle) offseason every year. Went on to wrestle for Iowa State.

John Lennon (not THAT John Lennon) at Worthington started wrestling as a sophomore (might have lost a bet?), and qualified for the state as a senior in 1987.

I thought that I heard when I was in high school that Yoshi Nakamura (St. Eds) didn't start wrestling until his freshman year although he had a martial arts background (judo, I think).

He was a 2x State Champion (96 and 97).

Joe Ghezzi was a Cadet(15-17) FS Champion in 1982. He started wrestling in the early 80's. Placed 3 times and won it as a senior.

Kameron Teacher of Central Crossing started wrestling his freshman year I believe.

Sorta on topic, Tervel Dlagnev started wrestling as a sophomore as way to lose weight. Place 4th and 3rd, Jr and Sr years in Texas. Went on to be 4x AA, 2x NCAA DII Champ, multiple world team member and medalist.... Not shabby for a late start.

You are correct on the years ... in both cases I meant 1983 (not 1987). I'm so old that I confused myself between HS and Col. graduation years!

Terion Stewart from Sandusky started wrestling this year. He qualified for the state tournament (D2 195). He is only a junior and could definitely reach the podium next year. That is assuming he wrestles next year.

Aaron Morton from Westerville South started wrestling 2 years ago as a freshman. His first day on the mat was the first day of practice November of 2016. He just placed 4th in the state tournament last weekend at 160-Pounds as a junior. He is also a 2x Freestyle/Greco National Team Member (summer of 2017 and summer of 2018). This past summer he took 4th at Fargo in Greco in Cadet 160.

Amar Thomas of Fairfield started in 8th grade, didn't wrestle varsity until his sophomore year; won 1 varsity match( 1- 2) freshman year. He qualified for state junior and senior years and accumulated 100 varsity wins and was a Fargo freestyle team member this past summer.
