Ohio Wrestlers in the 2019 NCAA Tournament

Just finished updating my list of all qualifiers this year, so here are all the OH guys in the NCAA D1 Tourney. Also I'm going off of whatever the website has as their HS, so if it's wrong lemme know:

Alex Mackall, 125lbs, Iowa State (Walsh Jesuit)
Drew Mattin, 125lbs, Michigan (Delta)

Tariq Wilson, 133lbs, NC State (Steubenville)
Tim Rooney, 133lbs, Kent State (St. Charles)
Mario Guillen, 133lbs, Ohio (Perrysburg)

Mitch Moore, 141lbs, Virginia Tech (St. Paris Graham)
Dom Demas, 141lbs, Oklahoma (Dublin Coffman)
Cam Kelly, 141lbs, Ohio (Bellbrook)
Corey Shie, 141lbs, Army (LaSalle)

Micah Jordan, 149lbs, Ohio St (St. Paris Graham)
Matt Kolodzik, 149lbs, Princeton (Blair, NJ)
Josh Heil, 149lbs, Campbell (Brunswick)
Tanner Smith, 149lbs, Chattanooga (Mechanicsburg)

Taleb Rahmani, 157lbs, Pittsburgh (Marysville)
Zac Carson, 157lbs, Ohio (Uniontown Lake)

Alex Marinelli, 165lbs, Iowa (St. Paris Graham)
Nick Kiussis, 165lbs, West Virginia (Brunswick)

Andrew McNally, 184lbs, Kent State (Uniontown Lake)

Anthony McLaughlin, 197lbs, Air Force (St. Ignatius)
Kollin Moore, 197lbs, Ohio State (Norwayne)
Rocco Caywood, 197lbs, Army (Perrysburg)

Billy Miller, 285lbs, Virginia Tech (Perry)
Conan Jennings, 285lbs, Northwestern (Centerville)
Matt Stencel, 285lbs, Central Michigan (Oregon Clay)

So I don’t see any St. Eds wrestlers on that list. Unless one is missing then their AA streak ends?

-Total of 24 wrestlers, really helped out by the wild cards today (5 guys got in today from OH).
- St. Paris Graham is the only school with 3 qualifiers I believe. Perrysburg, Brunswick and Uniontown Lake have two.
- 24 wrestlers is down from last year's total of 30, but last year's senior class was very impressive. Lost at least 10 seniors from a rough count(Tomasello, Heil, Scheidel, Heffernan, Sparkman, Jordan, Abounader, Coleman, Heyob, Kasper)
- Four guys from last year missed this season- Darmstadt (injury), Brent Moore (redshirt), Conel (personal) and unfortunately Eli Stickley.
- David Carr is a guy I think could have also qualified had he wrestled.

That's correct, Eds AA streak has ended. They did not qualify a wrestler this year

When I was going through the qualifier list, I mised McLaughlin.

So that changes it to 8/23 (or 24) being from NE Ohio with only one being from a Cuyahoga County school, though not a Cuyahoga County resident.

This is from FLO published in March 2017 seems like the streak may be a little longer. Impressive to say the least. Sad it has come to an end.

That streak includes non-D1 results (DII AA in 1989).

Hunter Ladnier. Don't believe he placed in the EIWA. I know he lost to Q. Monday in the quarters. He did win 22 matches this season.
Lukus Stricker also attends Harvard.

the streak is over

for St Eds not only is over no one from st eds is going to be at the tournament. Now lets start making assumptions why this happened. And go!

I only see four "sure thing" guys- Jordan, Kolodzik, Marinelli, and Moore. Next best chances are Wilson, Demas, Jennings, and Caywood.

I'll post more in the next week, but I'm going to take a look at the OH class of 2014 and write a bit on why this year's group is a bit down. That 2014 class was an interesting group of wrestlers.

I agree on the sure fire 4, I think Demas will and even in a stacked 133 Tariq proved he can get it done.

As far as St. Edward goes, work backward and you'll see c/o 2014 is fifth-year seniors. In the case of St. Edward the 2013-14 team is their worst team they had going back for a long time.

So I took a look at the 2014 state championships and tried to figure out why Ohio's numbers were down this year.

Guys who are wrestling:
-Only five state champions qualified for NCAAs this year- Mackall, Caywood, Micah, Marinelli, and Miller. Thats 5/42, or just shy of 12%
- Sparkman, Coleman, Heyob, and Reese all qualified I believe and have graduated.
- Darmstadt and Conel both have eligibility but aren't wrestling
- Brent Moore is redshirting, so didn't qualify but had a decent shot to.
- Noah Baughman, Austin Assad, and Kaleb Romero are NCAA qualify caliber wrestlers, but are backups.

Guys who aren't wrestling:
- Many top seniors aren't wrestling. Hayden Lee, Jose Rodriguez (jr), David Bavery, Tony Dailey, Dakota Sizemore, Chalmer Frueauf, and Andrew Alten were all state champs who didn't wrestle D1/didn't end up D1.
- Tegray Scales chose football (rightfully so)
- Several top wrestlers aren't in D1/didn't end up D1, bringing down numebrs: Donathan, Screptock, Kostandaras, Vough, Warner(s), Lacure, Harris stood out.

Overall, a down year for OH wrestlers combined with the top wrestlers not wresting D1/not staying in D1 causes the lower number of qualifiers/projected All-Americans.

Yup, and I know other wrestlers (Donathan, Warner off the top) have had success at the non-D1 level. But I was just discussing why the D1 numbers were a bit down.

#RIP The Streak.

Will pour some out for my homies.

Dang... That was so legit. Will most likely listen to "Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
