A doctor in California used a video-link robot to tell a patient he was going to die

Quote:
Preparing for the death of a loved one is difficult no matter the circumstances.

But Annalisia Wilharm said she never expected a doctor would deliver the bad news about her grandfather via a video screen on a robot.

Wilharm was sitting by her grandfather's bedside in the ICU of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fremont, California, last Monday night when the machine rolled into their room and a doctor, appearing via live video link, offered his grim prognosis. Her grandfather Ernest Quintana, 78, died the next day.

"I think they should have had more dignity and treated him better than they did," Wilharm told CNN. "No granddaughter, no family member should have to go through what I just did with him."

To be clear, a doctor physically rounding earlier that day and delivered the prognosis and discussed home hospice care with the family. Apparently, the patient was more ill and the physician via tele-link told the patient and family member the patient likely wouldn’t make it to hospice care at home. I think it was pretty insensitive and blunt, but I’m not sure there is any kind of recourse for the family.

I once had an oncologist who had his receptionist call me to tell me that my cancer treatments did not work and that there was nothing more he could do for me. When I asked the receptionist what I should do, she said, "I don't know. Maybe get another doctor?"

I know a doc who works for Kaiser in CA, she tells me it is basically socialized medicine from her side and that this is what medicare for all will look like.

Yes, I got a very good one. I had him for 4 1/2 years. Unfortunately he retired in January. Now I have to get a new one.

Always get another opinion, and preferably from a different health system.

I once heard the fire in my Dad's voice, and I asked him what was wrong. He said that "The educated idiot that just left asked me if anyone had spoken with me about hospice yet...". That was years ago - I've lost count.

It seems that the old traumas caused by football and an extremely physical work life, when revealed by a bone scan, closely resemble metastatic cancers to some eyes.....but not as much to others. The old buzzard is now adapting to an added androgen blocker, but his PSA is down to 0.20.

Will it make the premiums go down ? I realize that in this case, Robby the Robot probably helps those that own KGHI more than those that pay premiums, but maybe Medicare will be different.

My sister and I bought a color TV for my parents' 25th anniversary in 1965.
