What did you give up for Lent?

Do you participate in the Lenten season? Why or why not?

We hit the Friday night fish fry at various Catholic churches in the area.

Grew up in Presybyterian and Methodist churches; never have observed Lent. I don't recall the Methodist church I currently go to having a Lenten service until the late 1970's, but I don't attend it.

I did try to give up meat one year, in sympathy with a Roman Catholic buddy of mine, but we both broke it after two weeks.

Besides the sweets (cookies, cake, chips...) I gave up being a sloth. I have committed to get some decent exercise, even if just a 30 minute walk/run, lifting or something like that.

Being in Columbus, we don't have the Catholic presence like Cleveland or Cincinnati or Pittsburgh. Fish fries (or is it Fish Frys) here aren't as prevalent and aren't that great. Pittsburgh has some really good ones. Plus, the pierogi!!

Being a good cradle Catholic, still do the old-school Friday-abstinence-meat-thingy year-round anyways (turns out those cheddar biscuits at Red Lobster are pretty good ). Fast on Ash Wed. and Good Fri. Will try to give up Mt. Dew (after reading Hillbilly Elegy, which chs recommended in the DB). Got my ashes and rice bowl. IDK, guess I just wanted to pass the traditions on to the kid, as they were to me.

Around here, got a nice little title competition going amongst parishes for ‘Best Fish Fry.’ Probably hit up the one at the high school tonight.

Maybe start a thread with the best fish fries in town? I have given up the church thing as over the years they have gotten lamer when it comes to product served. In CLE my go to is the Academy Tavern in the Larchmer neighborhood of town. While the plate doesn't look special they use Pike/Walleye for the fish, which is arguably better than Cod for fried fish, and beer batter it which gives it a great flavor. They also have a great home made coleslaw and serve a side of home fried potatoes which are better than french fries.

We really liked the one at St. Stephen on Clime Rd. Have the typical filets, but also fried whole fish. The church was all but dead but was saved by the Hispanic influx on the West side. Love the guy shouting to sell tickets for the "cincuenta cincuenta".

It'd be nice if actual discussion could take place instead of the Dems thinking every Republican is a white supremacist Nazi or Republicans thinking every Dem is a baby killing socialist. Nearly every poster on the DB is a meme of their particular ideology.

These prevalent assumptions in the general public are no doubt absurd. Yet, on the Yappi Debate Forum, they seem a bit closer to reality:

Yep. I'm Catholic and it's tradition. No meat on Fridays and I'll work at our athletic association fish fry.

I don't do Lent as traditionally done (ashes, fish, etc) but the concepts of self-examination, self-control and self-denial are always good for us. These concepts were never real popular but are practically disappearing from our culture.

Because fish are cold blooded, warmblooded animals were considered meat back in the day. It's OK to also eat reptiles on Fridays but since most Catholics are not into snake it ends up being fish.

The fish fry I’ll go to tonight probably wouldn’t be good for you ‘cause they’ll also be selling chances. But if you go to Stations of the Cross, held in the school chapel afterwards, that would probably make it all okay.

That said, next weekend might be more of a challenge, in that the school’s hosting a St. Paddy’s Day Bash, with lots of food, a cash bar, music, games of chance, and armchair horse races.

This reminded me of Auggie's post, from last season's 'Concessions at games' FB thread:

It is astonishing that no matter the topic the sides stick to their talking points.

Here is my stand on it.
Who made up the rule to eat fish on Friday, the apostles.
What did the apostles do for a living, they were fishermen.
They made a rule to buy their products one day a week...

I do eat fish because i like it, however if i am somewhere i canget a good steak on Friday i will get it...

While working at my client Catholic Charities in Alexandria, Va. last year I let a visitor from "upstairs" know she had a smudge on her forehead. Um...er...duh. It was Ash Wednesday. Try to be nice.....

Has anybody else noticed that the word meme is used a lot more by baby killing socialists than by white supremacist Nazis?

What's that about?
