Volvo will limit all cars to 112 mph starting with 2021 models

Quote:
Volvo Cars will put a top speed of 112 mph on all cars starting with the 2021 models, the company announced Monday.

"Volvo is a leader in safety: we always have been and we always will be," Volvo President and CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in a statement. "Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it's worth doing if we can even save one life."

The top speed I ever did on my 2012 Volvo convertible was 95 coming back from the Grand Canyon.

Who has ever gone 112 in a Volvo? If you're driving a Volvo odds are your not a real risk taker.

There goes the German market for Volvos as most Germans do 120 at least on the autobahn.

My record was 125 on I-90 by Cleveland/Lakewood border. Young and stupid. Could not imagine driving that fast now.

I wasn't the driver but that was the fastest I've ever gone in a car back in HS. Was a little worried about the driver's mental well-being at the time. Plenty of thoughts flashed through my head but I didn't say anything.

Fastest I ever went on a public road was about 105-110 in Montana. In a Chevy Lumina. Near the physical limitations of such a car.

It's not a dare if the vehicle isn't shaking.

I went over 90 in a 2.4L (old school what's that, 70 horse?) Pinto. Nice thing about a Pinto and road ragers, one shift into reverse sends them scattering. Braggin about stupidity: sign of age under 17 or over 60?

For me I was just disappointed my first time in Montana I hadn't realized they had instituted a speed limit again after their "reasonable and prudent" law was thrown out by the state Supreme Court. For years, other than during the NMSL, Montana only had the "reasonable and prudent" limit before just having no limit after that case.

Instead, the speed limit was designated a rather mundane 75mph. But the key is Montana right now has only 243 state troopers and even fewer back then when there was no speed limits. Traffic enforcement outside of towns and cities can only be done in most areas by highway patrol. So, the speed limit is still generally whatever you really feel like going since most cops will not pull you over, back then, as long as you kept it under 100.

So... you were only 5-10 mph over the speed limit. Any reasonable cop would see THAT's not worth pulling someone over for.

Over 90 mph in a Pinto? Now, that's impressive!

"One shift in reverse sends them scattering."

My old Chevy Vega started shaking uncomfortably at 62 mph, so effective top speed was always 61 mph in that car.

My fastest was 120 mph in a '72 Pontiac Grand Prix, back on a straight country road around Oxford in broad daylight. I was by myself and wanted to see if I could bury the speedometer at 120 mph. As soon as I buried the speedometer, I backed off. 120 mph and not 1 mph faster.

No the actual legal limit was 65 on two lane roads. Thus was after Montana reintroduced speed limits again.

As I said, it was a Lumina. You're not going to get much faster out of that car.

120 in a Plymouth Duster (340 cu.in., OHC) and she was skakin'! My girlfriend, too, though I got the idea she liked it. I-85-/I-40 in Durham.

Yes, young and really stupid.

Got ride in 1967 Ford Cobra with a 427, was one of the last made. Did you know that at just over 8000 rpms in fourth gear you are doing 180 on a public highway and the light poles look like a tall picket fence. I have asked myself many times over why am I still here. The fastest I ever drove a car was a 132 and it just would not go any faster,. Back then I thought 100 was the speed you cruised at.

Are you sure it wasn't in a Hot Rod Lincoln?

Like EagleGuy said, we were young and really stupid. But, man, we had some cool cars back then! And, cool 8-track car stereos (oh wait...never mind).

Days after he bought the Cobra they announced they were stopping production. Ford dealer where he bought the car called him wanting to buy it back. He kept it for several years and because of a accident and losing a leg he sold the car for 30,000+ Kinda of sad considering what they go for today. He paid a little over 9 thousand for it. Very few people have ever gotten to ride in a real Ford Cobra let alone wide open as fast as they would go. Glad I am alive to tell the memory.
