James Ford, 2015 graduate from Worthington Kilbourne High School, started wrestling in 8th grade, was a 2x State Qualifier (1-2 DNP in Division One 220 in 2014 as a junior) and got 3rd in the state at 220-Pounds as a senior in 2015. He was also a 4x Freestyle and Greco National Team member (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), a 2x Fargo All-American (7th in Greco at Cadet 220 in 2013 and 1st in Greco at Junior 220 in 2015). He was also an Ironman Runner-Up in December of 2014 at 220. He also went on to wrestle Heavyweight at University of Purdue.

bdhof will become famous soon enough
Not a recent one, but some guy named Lee Kemp didn't step on the mat until his 9th grade. He went on to win 2 OH titles, 3 NCAA titles and 3 World titles. Not bad.

However there was a Mason heavyweight, I think it might be Stein, who I was told started wrestling in 9th grade and won state by his senior year. This was only about 10 or 12 years ago. Maybe a Mason person could verify that.

A few years before that, Joshua Thorpe started wrestling for Western Hills High School as a freshman and qualified his senior year, the first to do so for his school in 25 years.

Based on my experience as coach, there is nothing stopping a halfway athletic freshman who is seriously motivated from qualifying for state by his senior year. I especially like the OHSAA qualifying system because it gives less experienced kids manageable milestones to set as goals for each year of experience. To qualify for state, one must make it a goal to have qualified for disrtict by maybe sophomore year, and win a match or two by junior year. That usually is enough to make state qualification feel like an attainable goal for any wrestler willing to work extremely hard for it.

Good stuff, thanks Coach K and thanks to all! I'm just a casual fan, and I thought that with all the youth wrestling going on these days, a kid who truly started wrestling as a freshman had no chance or only a very, very slim chance of ever becoming a state qualifier (much less a placer or champion): hed simply be too far behind kids who had coaching and wrestled dozens or maybe scores of matches before ninth grade. Shows how much I know.

I would need a little help from the Perrysburg people, but there was a wrestler named Alge Bond that placed 5th in the state tournament in 1993 and 1994 with very little experience. I thought I had heard he started in high school. Very good athlete. Fun to watch.
