Jap whizzers, packs of smokes, and State tourney parting thoughts.....

Another state tournament is behind us, I enjoyed this one thoroughly, not as much as 2017 which was my favorite ever, but it was a good one IMHO. Last year, Yappi poster Gardens35 succinctly summarized the 3 days as such:

There was a lot of great wrestling and extra helpings of drama, particularly in the finals. Curious as to what other have in terms of big take-aways or parting thoughts.

I'm too verbose to be as succinct as Gardens35, but for me, the collective crowd reaction to 3 events will be my lasting memory:

1.) After Olivia Shore lost in the wrestle backs a huge portion of the crowd gave her a standing ovation. This was completely spontaneous and very, very cool I thought. I don't think I ever remember a early Friday Consi match ever triggering a standing O. A great testament to the wrestling community.

2.) The loud collective booing after the 138 D2 final was odd. I chewed on this one for a while and didn't know exactly what to think about. I'm not sure I do still. I guess maybe (I hope) it was collective frustration at how the match ended (or more precisely how it was sent to the final OT. "We wuz robbed" of a clean , decisive result and we don't like that. If the match ended on the reversal and ride out, we'd remember that as being a great match. Instead we're left talking about the release and caution point. I was rooting for the wrestler who lost but felt bad for the victor. Not blaming the crowd for reacting the way they did, but to me it still seems odd.

3.) The collective silent non-reaction to another not-to-be named D2 final was also interesting. Not sure I ever heard the Schott so non-responsive. No claps, no boos. Almost like a large group collectively saying "we're moving on...."

So there you have it, my summary in emoji:

Great topic, and sorry that it did not take off.... a little friendly feedback, I think if you had a different title to your thread you might have had a better response....

Off the top of my head, here's a few you may want to consider next time...

"Freshman Hold Backs "
"Youth State Tournament or Cash Grab?"
"Private School Recruiting"
"Public schools with confusing names that sound like Catholic Schools"
" Flo Wrestling should be free"....

hope that helps...

I thought the title was fantastic honestly?

Another that may have garnered more hits...

"State or States" (Even though the answer is quite obvious, considering there is only one state present), but I digress. Great thread title and great additions.

I think you nailed it. The response of the crowd felt...meh?!?! I think his extracurricular entanglements may have had something to do with it. Like, yes he is great but...

Unfortunately, wrestling fans can be a bit fickle in that way. They almost always love to see the underdog win. They watch the favorites in hopes that someone will pop their bubble and when the favorite makes it look too easy...meh.

There have been years when the several of the matches have been very good, but this had to be the best year when it comes to matches where the combination of scrambling is so extremely good.

I wish I could have been getting the matches on video for future wrestlers to see.
