Highest Runner Up Point Totals

As many people know LaSalle broke the state record for most points scored by a Runner-up Team with 186.5 pts and Elyria broke the record for most points scored by a 3rd place team with 143pts.

If you look at those point totals in a historical perspective, in the last 40 years of D1 wrestling prior to this year, the LaSalle point total would have won the state title 33/40 times (1 year would have been a tie). Elyria's point total would have won it 15/40 times.

The Top 3 teams in D1 wrestled lights out this past weekend. Congrats to all the Champs & placers on doing your best to reach your goals.

That's a question that only the hypothetical gods can answer.

I would say that Crace would have possibly finished Top 3 and Farouq possibly in the Top 3 also. Adding their points in would have put the team in the hunt but it still may not have been enough.

But I will say that when they were removed from the team, that the team was being doubted by many and that the Elyria team came together and had an amazing season.

Hats off to St. Edward & LaSalle on also having an amazing tournament. Now lets get all of our studs on the Freestyle dual & Fargo teams and bring home some National titles

We estimated that Elyria would of got 40 points with these two. I believe max you can get is 30 points for champ with 4 pins. So these two max was 60 points.

but you have to look at with those two in the brackets would It have changed any points eds received? The results may not have been the same in a couple places, my guess it would have been extremely close.

Yeah things could of change in brackets for sure. It definitely would of been a 3 team race with in 10 points of all 3 teams. I think next year will be a 4 team race and it will be just as close and extremely fun to watch and follow.

Could have depended on who won at district. The Eds & Elyria guys are always split on the bracket as long as they finish as 1/2 or 1/3 or 2/4

At 145 Donathan & Andonian were split because of separation criteria due to both being district champs and being Top 3 in the State in prior years.

Neither Crace or Farouq had separation criteria so they could have been on the same side as Donathan and Brady win or lose at district.

Lots of variables. But it wasnít meant to be and thatís ok. The Elyria team wrestled amazing for the most part and we are very proud of their accomplishments.

I edited the third place teams to include CVCA from 2001 in D3. In that year the top three teams were within eight points and all exited the same qualifier (SVSM, Chanel, CVCA)

Point totals have increased dramactically compared to the early days. Much of this is due to the way the tournament scoring has changed throughout the years along with the # of placers per weight, and how many weight classes there are.

Significant Years in OHSAA wrestling history as far as how points were scored
1938- 1st year of the Tournament, 1 Division, 10 weight classes, Placed top 4, No team scores kept
1939- Winning team was Cleveland John Hay (23pts- 2 champs, 2 RU, 2 3rds), There was a 4 way tie for RU at 14pts, Only placed Top 3, 19 teams competed
1941- Placed Top 4 again
1944- Only Placed Top 2
1947- Began Placing Top 4 again
1955- 11th weight class added
1958- # of Participating teams tops 50 for the 1st time, 1st time Winning Team score tops 75pts
1967- # of Participating teams reaches 75 for the 1st time
1969- Top 6 place, 2nd time Winning Team score tops 75pts
1970- 12th weigh class added
1971- 13th weigh class added, 2 Classes are created, A-AA- Small School Class (Nearly 75 teams- Top 6 place), AAA-Large School Class (75+ Teams, Top 6 place)
1972- 1st year 1/2pts were used
1974- Howard Ferguson becomes head coach of St. Edward (highest finish prior to his arrival was 19th in 1972)
1976- 3rd Class is added, A-Smallest School Division (32 teams- Top 4 place), AA- Medium School Division (Nearly 60 teams- Top 6 place), AAA-Large School Division (70 Teams, Top 6 place)
1978- 1st time 100 point barrier was broken and it was smashed by Akron Coventry (AA) with 158.5pts, Also 1st time Runner-up team eclipsed the century mark (Columbus DeSales 121.5pts)
Also Start of St. Edward's dominance of AAA/D1 winning their 1st title, 10 in a row, and 33/42 State Championships
1979- All 3 divisions only place Top 4
1980- A- Place Top 4, AA & AAA- Place Top 6
1983- 1st Time Class AA is 75+ teams
1988- Classes AAA-AA-AA become Divisions 1, 2, 3: D1 (65+ Teams), D2 (Nearly 60 teams), D3 (55+ teams), 1st time all 3 Divisions place Top 6
1995- 14th weight class added
1995- 1st time 200 point barrier was broken (Walsh Jesuit 203)
1999- 1st Year at the Schott, 1st time All 3 Divisions have 75+ teams represented at State Tournament, Full 5 rounds of wrestle backs/follow the leader format is dropped/Schott can hold 10 mats
2005- Addition of 7th/8th place matches
2009- 1st time 250 point barrier was broken (Graham 282- Still All Time OHSAA record)

The state tournament had some form of "follow the leader" until it moved to the Schott in 1999.

As you can see OHSAA wrestling had a lot of big changes in the 1970's with adding of multiple weight classes, division, additional placements, and I believe a scoring system change in the late 70's which caused team scores at the state tournament to increase significantly.

There hasn't been any significant changes to the scoring system since 2005 when they added 7/8th placers

With regard to scoring changes: I believe placement points, in the era of 6 places, were something like 12-9-7-5-3-1 ... whereas with 8 places the points start at 16 for 1st (I think).

So scoring "records" are most relevant when comparing to only the years in which the scoring parameters were the same.

I'm pretty sure in the modern era (since 1999) placement is/was as follows but maybe I'm wrong:

16-12-9-7-5-3 (Top 6)
16-12-9-7-5-3-2-1 (Top 8)- Since 2005
