Sarah Berger NCAA Champion

D2 Cross Country at NCAA does not get much love.

Sarah Berger NCAA D2 Champion for Grand Valley State.
2017 she was 2nd overall.
2016-she only ran the regional and was alternate for NCAA championships
2015- medical red shirt
2014- she red shirted
Wadsworth 2014 Graduate

Her team won the NCAA meet in 2014, 2016, and this year in 2018.

Josh Steible
Centerville 2012 Graduate was also All American for Grand Valley State finished 28th overall as the 4th man. Grand Valley State also won the D2 boys race for the first time ever.

Cedarville boys finished 24 overall at the NCAA D2 meet.

Walsh girls finished 12 overall.

I am sure I missed a ton of Ohio kids.

Berger never redshirted for XC. She played soccer at Walsh from 2014-2016 and ran 1 or 2 XC meets in 2016, 1 of which was the regional meet in Evansville IN the morning after playing a soccer tournament game in Michigan. She took up XC at Walsh full-time in 2017 which netted her a National runner-up finish in XC followed by a National title in the 1500 last spring. She’s at GVSU for grad school.

Also, Walsh men placed 18th on Saturday. 6 of their 7 runners on Sat. were from Ohio:
Jacob Kernell (Uniontown Lake HS)
Jacob Caniford (Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas HS)
Mark Hadley (Boardman HS, Furman University)
Noah Murray (Louisville HS)
Jacob Turner (South Bend, IN)
Edward Walsh (Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas HS)
Spencer Wirick (Uniontown Lake HS), Wirick was subbed in for Beau Boyden (Lancaster Fisher Catholic HS) who ran at the regional meet.

The men came up big at regionals to earn the 3rd and final automatic qualifying spot. They were hit hard by key injuries to 10K school record holder Stephen Kapes (Solon HS, Ashland University) and Hadley. Kapes was lost for the season before they ran a meet, and Hadley was able to soldier onward and help the team make Nationals at less than 100% healthy.

All 7 of the Walsh women were from Ohio:
Brianna Coy (Canton GlenOak HS)
Alexa Leppelmeier (Pettisville HS)
Andra Lehotay (Magnolia Sandy Valley HS)
Claire Robertson (Avon HS)
Hannah Soehnlen (Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas HS)
Katelyn Luther (Burton Berkshire HS)
Alyssa Viscounte (Alliance Marlington HS)

Incidentally, Brianna Coy was a JV runner for most if not all of her HS career. She was 13th overall on Sat. and won the GMAC meet last month which Walsh hosted at GlenOak HS.

This makes 2 years in a row that Coach Mizicko has guided both the men’s and women’s programs to Nationals. Despite being underfunded, both programs as well as the track and field programs have improved dramatically under Mizicko.
