In the Beginning - The Miami University Tri-State Invitational Track Meet

Well, I had the opportunity to be in Oxford, Ohio recently on business. As is my want, I stopped by the new Lane Public Library to do some microfilm research. I wanted to get better copies of some district results from the 1920s (the Southwest district meet at Oxford began in 1923, one of 8 district meets throughout Ohio that year). My research in years past had indicated that the 1st meet in 1923 was a conversion of an already existing meet that had been called the Tri-State Invitational, held at Miami U. I was able to locate the results of the very 1st Tri-State Invitational, held on 21 May 1910. I've compiled those results, and I have some of the results of other years that I'll slowly add to the file I've attached here. I thought some of you might appreciate seeing this, as many of us older dudes here remember the Miami Relays, which began in 1934 or 1935 if memory serves me correctly. The district meet at Oxford split after 1933, with the Dayton area schools going to Dayton, while the Cincinnati area schools stayed at Oxford for 1934, then the meet moved to Cincinnati in 1935. While not absolutely sure, I'd guess the Miami Relays was Miami U.'s way of bringing money back on campus by offering a new version of the meet that had started with the 1910 meet.

Anyway, hope you enjoy. I'll update the file sometime next year. One big name that competed and won at the original Miami Tri-State meet was one DeHart Hubbard, famed Walnut Hills athlete (1921) and 1924 Olympic broad jump champion. He also competed in the 42" high hurdles and discus in HS. Also had a hop-step-jump over 44 feet in 1921 as a senior in HS, as well as his 22' 11"+ jump at Oxford the same year.

Very cool. Made me look up the history of Dayton Steele high school. The connection to the Wright brothers was interesting. I also learned about the lion statue.
