Before the O.I.A.A. State Meet - 1905-1907

After some mild research, I've come across the following information in early newspapers that confirm that there was an annual "state" competition held between the years 1905-1907. For those interested in doing further research, here are the dates and locations of these first "state" meets.

1905 - 3 June - @ Idlewood Park, Newark
1906 - 26 May - @ Beaver Field, Granville
1907 - 25 May - @ Beaver Field, Granville

I have real good results from the 1907 meet, but very partial ones from 1905 & 1906. I'm going to be doing further research into these meets and ad it to my ongoing research on the rest of the official meet results from 1908-1970.

I thought this info may interest some here.

Are those dates and meets affiliated with the OHSAA records?

They may have data, but I don't know if they've ever published such. I've never seen any. The official state meet under O.I.A.A. (OHSAA's early name) started in 1908 at Beaver Field, Granville. I now understand why it started there given that the 3 editions from 1905-1907 were all sponsored by Denison U. It makes perfect sense now.

OHSAA claims the first state track meet was at Denison University in 1908 which is in Granville. "The state track meet was first run at Denison University in 1908 with just 12 schools participating, moving to Ohio Wesleyan University the next year. The meet then relocated to the campus of Ohio State University in 1910." https://ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Sports/T..._1908-1911.pdfmm

Back then, it was not called Denison University but Denison College. Craig Whitmore in information before his passing that he sent to Jesse Squires does say the meet was at Beaver Field at Denison College. This institution of higher learning is located at Granville, Ohio then and now. The facility at Denison College was called Beaver Field. http://personal.bgsu.edu/~jsquire/1908state.pdf

To answer ccrunner609's question, the answer may be that the meets run at Denison College from 1905-1907 were not run under the auspices of the OIAA/ohsaa. Denison College may have called them state championships but the OHSAA does not count them as such. They should more correctly be called state meet invitationals

You are correct. There was nothing "official" about them as the O.I.A.A. didn't vote to create State Championships in sports until late 1907. The best way to describe what happened during 1905-1907 is similar to what transpires today with the Ohio Indoor Championships sponsored by OATCCC. Not official, but definitely a good attempt at an indoor championship. 1905-1907 are very early days in the sport in Ohio HS (within the first 20 years), so a lot of things were still in flux then, and there were not nearly as many individual high schools separated from small community schools then.

That said, I think I've got enough information in my possession that O.I.A.A. was at least influential, if not responsible for some part of these meets. That information is developing.

I'd like to attach a copy of 30 May 1907 edition of "The Granville Times". They did a pretty decent job at reporting on that meet. Unfortunately, Yappi's server won't allow for 18+ Mbyte files!
