Would be four golds and three bronzes. And they will come in 2nd in the team title. Russia is that good every year people- this is one of the best USA teams ever and they couldn't beat a normal Russian team.

Coincidentally or not, 1996 was the last time there were 10 weight classes. Sure, we had more chances for medals this year than in recent years, but that's still a darn good performance any year.

2017: 6 medalists / 8 weight classes = 75%

2018: 7 medalists / 10 weight classes = 70%

Wanted to shout out the women today-

-Adeline Gray (76kg) will wrestle in the finals tomorrow against Turkey. Gray had a big win over Erica Wiebe (Canada, 2016 Olympic champ) and will wrestle for her 4th World title tomorrow.
-Tamyra Mensah (68kg) will wrestle for bronze after a tough semis match with Koumba Larroque (France, Junior world champ this year). Mensah beat 2015 World champ Battsetseg (Mongolia) in the quarters and will be a favorite for bronze tomorrow.
-Forrest Molinari (65kg) and Erin Clodgo (72kg) both went 1-1. Molinari got pulled back into repechage and will need two wins to win bronze.

Jaccara Winchester lost controversially in the semis yesterday and will wrestle for bronze against Cuba soon. Had the winning takedown overturned at the last second. Jenna Burkert went 0-1 and did not get drawn back in.

Some "fun" facts I was keeping throughout the tourney:

-Only one champ from 2017 repeated- Petriashvili at 125kg.
-Only three 2017 finalists from 2017 made the finals this year- Petriashvili and both wrestlers at 97kg, Snyder and Sadualev.
-Only five guys won medals in the last three years- Snyder, Sadulaev, Petriashvili, Yazdani Charati, and J'Den Cox.
-Odikadze (Georgia, 97kg) had lost the bronze medal match four straight years before winning bronze this year.
-Three wrestlers won a medal in their first freestyle world championship at any level (Cadet/Junior/U23/Senior) this weekend: Conyedo Ruano of Italy (who didn’t wrestle for several years due to the country transfer from Cuba to Italy) and two Americans, Kyle Dake and Joe Colon.
-Guys that beat three ranked wrestlers: Chakaev, 65kg (beat #9, #18, #4), Iakobishvili, 70kg (beat #19, #17, #20), Sidakov, 74kg (beat #2, #1, #20), Yazdani Charati, 86kg (#9, #13, #3), Karimi, 92kg (#2, #1, #7), Sadulaev, 97kg (#10, #6, #2), Hadibasmanj, 125kg (#16, #1, #10), Petriashvili, 125kg (#10, #4, #17)
-Guys that beat four ranked wrestlers: Dake, 79kg (#19, #16, #1, #7), Cox, 92kg (#6, #12, #7, #13)
-Guys that beat five ranked wrestlers: Taylor, 86kg (#1, #9, #13, #3, #11)
-Youngest medalist was Otoguro, 65kg (19 years old). Oldest was Bonne Rodriguez, 61kg (34 years old0. Both were champs
-Youngest average age was at 57kg (24.25 years old). Oldest was 70kg (29.25 years old). Total average age was 26.525 years old

Sadulaev is just better than Snyder. It's a testament to Snyder that he was able to beat Sadulaev last year.

Sadulaev rarely (if ever) loses, nor is he extended (i.e. winning narrowly) that often. Snyder on the other hand seems to suffer some losses in the course of a year, and has some narrow margin wins.

Otuguro's matches were a blast. 13-2, 11-0, 12-2, 15-10 and 16-9.

And he's only 19! He's going to be a huge star in two years.

He was explosive for sure. Was he really hurt or just catching his breath?

Women's update for the day:

Medal matches- Adeline Gray won her fourth world title today, beating 2017 champ Adar 12-1 via about 18 leg laces. That's the USA's fourth gold of the tourney combined. Tamyra Mensah-Stock also won a bronze medal, beating Di Bacco of Canada 7-4. It's her first world medal after good international results (2x Yarygin champ, University silver). Both Forrest Molinari (today, 1-1 to Azerbaijan) and Jaccara Winchester (yesterday, 5-2 to Cuba) lost their bronze medal matches.

Today's matches- The biggest news was World/Olympic champ Helen Maroulis getting pinned 1st round and going 0-1. Fortunately, Sarah Hildebrandt made the finals and will wrestle Okuno of Japan (won U23 and Seniors last year, is 19 years old). It's Hildebrandt's first world medal in her second senior championship (also made two Junior teams). Mallory Velte will also wrestle in the bronze medal match against a t.b.d. opponent. Whitney Conder lost first round to North Kora 7-2 and will not be brought back in.

Well that was the last freestyle match. Our women's team is doing well (but isn't as popular, especially since they don't wrestle NCAA) and our Greco team isn't anything to stay up for.
