Week One Results

Post meets from this weekend here.

It was a great day for the opening weekend of the 2019 season with sunshine and temperatures in the 50s in SWO. La Salle had their Legends Invitational at La Salle. I was interested in seeing how the Lancers would do in the post Russo era. The Lancers won the meet against primarily Norther Kentucky teams. Top three teams were as follows:

1)LaSalle (110)
2)Covington Catholic (81)
3)Bishop Brossart (76)

Mr. Slippery will become famous soon enough
There doesn't appear to have been much action in NEO, most likely due to many schools being on spring break this week and also the frustration of having extremely bad weather on the 1st weekend in recent years.

This week Coventry has a tri meet vs Barberton and Hoban.

Coventry should be able to beat Barberton. Barberton is tougher in the sprints nowadays, but we should be able to do very well against them in the jumps, hurdles, and distance events. I think we should get the 4*200 as well.

As for Hoban, beating them will be exceedingly difficult. Based on what Coventry and Hoban return from last year, I have Hoban as 20 point favorites. the keys for Coventry, are they need to place top 2 in the distance events. Returning state runner up wrestler Hinzman needs to beat Moegerle in the High Jump. Coventry needs to hold its own in the sprints, and take the 4*100, and 4*200. we need to go 1-2, or 1-3 in the hurdles. And we need to have throwers this season...a big questionmark. Basically for Coventry to win, just about everything that can conceivably go right for the comets needs to happen. Otherwise, the dual record becomes 2-3 Hoban.

On Friday we will return to the Cope Invitational. We will face opponants like Salem, who are the defending district champs. I think Coventry should place top 3 in this invitational.

Coventry's boys team outlook this season: Returning the vast majority of their letterman winners from last years crew, the team will feature a mixture of veteran upperclassmen, as well as some underclassmen talent. In addition to the 45 ish returning athletes, the team will feature around 25 new faces, either freshman, or first time tracksters, or transfers, bringing the total roster to 70 ish. It remains to be seen what these new faces can do for the comets, but from what Coventry has returning, I expect their distance squad will continue to improve this season, continuing the trend starting 5 years ago. Their sprints, while down a bit last year, featured a solid 4*100 and 4*200 last season, most of those athletes will be returning. Rankin will be out however, he tore is ACL in football season, and wants to get ready for college football with Mount Union next fall. We return strong hurdlers in Jackson for the 110's, Shaver for the 300's. Our jumps will feature Hinzman, a state runner up from wrestling season. Our biggest question mark this season remains the throws and mid distance. However, I think there is enough talent on this team that they should be able to finish top 2 in the league, be well represented at regionals, and perhaps qualify to state in a couple of events.

For the Coventry girls, I think their strength will be in the sprints, jumps and hurdles. Their Throws will be a question mark. And their distance squad also will be a major question mark, one to which the answer has not presented itself in years, however, I have not given up hope on them yet. Sooner or later they will catch a break, get a good athlete whom we can start building a team around. One day...

Psychodad, what will Woodridge have on the track this season? What is your prediction for the PTC this year?

Salem starts with a dual against Carrollton and then the Cope Invite, both at home. Girls and boys distances should be strong as should the long relays for both. Girls weight events should do well this season. Gotta wait until the season opens to see how strong the sprinters will be. Lost to graduation was Quinlan Rumsey who was a great all around performer in many events. He will be difficult to replace.
