I agree and disagree. When JR wants to be, he is a good defender. Look back at the many switches in the Finals that put him on Durant. Durant scored a lot of easy baskets but it wasn't due to poor defense. JR defended well, Durant just shot well over him due to height. However, JR rarely wants to be a good defender.

I agree with this ... and add, his on the ball defense was decent ... his problems were mostly his off the ball defense ... he lost focus and gave up many hard cuts to the basket for easy layups.

Charles Barkley is often a windbag, but I remember what he said when the Cavs traded for JR. In short, he said JR was not a "bad kid" but was a follower. If he was on a team with knuckleheads who got in trouble, he'd be a knucklehead who got in trouble, but with a strong leader like LeBron he'd be a good citizen. I think that's been borne out in large part. I think with LeBron gone, the combination of him being directionless and his skills fading will make him at best worthless and at worst a painful distraction.

The question is .... what can or should be done with JR ... what are the Cavs willing to do to get rid of him ... give up a draft pick ... or take a bad contract back in return ... buy him out for big $$$$?

IMO the Cavs will have to hang onto him until the deadline at the earliest, if they don't want to give up draft picks or take back a bad contract. He has a small guaranteed deal, about $4m I think, for 2019-2020. That'll be attractive to some teams.

Nobody is taking on that contract with his skills so quickly declining. Unfortunately, he apparently has pictures of someone in the Cavs hierarchy engaging in unnatural acts with a farm animal that keeps him on the floor.

I expect JR to go full-scale #HennySZN this year without LBJ and the prospect of being a legitimate contender.

It should make for a few memorable LOL moments this year. I can't wait until the trade deadline and beyond when he should become far easier to move. If they fail to move him, IMO they should just buy him out before next season when his guaranteed money takes a huge drop.

Houston purportedly "kicking the tires" on a JR trade. Holy smokes, they can kick the entire damn car if they'll take him off of the Cavs' hands!

Might be something where the Cavs would have to take back Ryan Anderson's contract. If we were to get, say a 2021 first rounder from Houston, then I'd do it

I agree. He's only good when he focuses. I'm OK with that though, because the occasions where he focuses are when it really counts.

JR Smith of all people proving "flip the switch" is real.

You think, take him and Lue and start another team then.

Sure did “focus” when it really counted in game one!

He only focused until he got his money ... since then, not so much ... on offense & defense.

Saw briefly on ESPN (The Jump?) where they were talking about one sports book's over/under lines for wins for this year and they had the Cavs at 30.5. If the bar on the books is really going to be that low I may have to get a piece of that action given the post-LeBron direction they appear to be taking.

I generally try to ignore Windhorst, but I saw a week or two ago where he called them a 32-45 win team depending on a few factors. Barring major injuries, blowing it up, etc. that's sounds about right to me. "Average" performance for this group is around 37-40 wins IMO.

Lue is worth a half dozen losses at least.

This is a chance for him to show he can coach ... and not just a LBJ hand picked seat filler.

If Lue was nervous last year how will he react if they win 30 games and run an offense ?

They didn't play Defense with LBJ so can he coach them to play without him,may not win 30 if that is the case.
