Does anybody play slow pitch softball anymore?

Decades ago I was very involved in slow pitch softball as a player and an umpire in Sandusky and Wood Counties. Towns that used to have multiple adult leagues now have none. Does anybody play anymore?

Young people are too busy making money or chasing Pokemon. It seems as though, if it doesn't involve networking and making a buck, or sitting in front of a screen, young people just aren't interested. Just look at the demise of volunteer and fraternal organizations, heck even volunteering for their kids sports teams has become too much to ask of these young parents. They all figure someone else will do it.

I didn't make that claim, but stated a fact with which many organizations are dealing. Tell me my observations are not true and then please explain why the reduced involvement in these activities. There certainly was not any judgment in my observation. It was, just my observation. And yes, my observations were the result of my personal experience in youth sports, fraternal and volunteer organizations. I would love to hear of your observations or experiences.

Why the would I play slow pitch softball while I was still physically capable of playing an actual sport?

I'm sure we crossed paths at some point. Probably got along even.

Played for roughly 12 years on some really good teams out of Toledo (USSSA B & C). Played 6 nights a week at one point (Lucas County, Detweiler [ASA], and Rossford - not to mention tournaments). We had a great group of guys that all had known each other for years. The entire team either played high end college baseball or pro baseball (Toledo, OSU, Indiana, Blue Jays, Angels, Pirates) and I played college football. Had a blast with some really good friends but once the kids come along it was time to put it all away (33/34 years old I hung it up).

I noticed a big change once bat companies understood the money that could be made off of softball. Once they started making bats that were so hot a 5'9" 145lbs. DB with a 5 cent swing could stroke one 360 ft. the fun kind of went away.

Two of the leagues I mention above were an absolute blast and packed with teams and no longer exist today.

Pretty sure plenty of beer drinking athletes do softball. Probably a close second to horse shoes.

For sure we at least knew some of the same people

I have a lot more friends that are liberal/Democrats than conservatives. Nobody takes anything too serious, and avoid touchy subjects when we need to.

And we have enough common interests that I'm pretty sure we would get along.

Let's also remember that youth baseball over the past decade plus has gone from local leagues with one-two fixed week night games and maybe a every other weekend to now every team travels and has a tournament each weekend. Trying to play softball with one kid is hard enough, two kids and it's nearly impossible if you want to be at your kids games.

It's also become a complete joke. You'll see more verbal fights with umpires/other teams in a weekend tournament than you'll see in an entire month of MLB. Not something I want to spend my free time doing.

Some of my favorite things right there.

Throw in shuffleboard and cornhole and you've nailed it.

Ahhh the old bar days...
