Shuttle Hurdles Relay
It looks to me like some meets run the girls 4 x 100m hurdles at 30" height and don't bother changing the height and distance between them for the boys. I cite the case of Mt. Healthy running 58.76 at their own invitational in 2015 at the Owls nest when they didn't have a single boy running under 16.19 in the highs. I know the height of the boys shuttles is not at high hurdle height 39" but at intermediate height 36". It just looks like some meets don't bother to change the height or distance between the girls and the boys. Also mile split shows two rankings for the boys in the shuttles 4 x 100m and 4 x 110m. The time for Mt. Healthy shows up on the 4 x 110m hurdles list and is ranked third in the state for that year when they had no one even running in the district finals in 2015?

I know they want to give a event for the hurdlers at relay meets but I always thought that event to be odd at best. Many schools don't have 4 hurdlers so they end up looking for volunteers willing to give it a go.

Some relay meets not only run the 4 x 110 hurdles but also the 4 x 300 hurdles.

I always thought the judging of the "handoffs" was suspect on these races. I thought of them as gimmick races like the throwers 4x100.

You had to bring the fat man relay into it. We few, we proud, we throwers who could sprint!

Powerful throwers generally can run a decent 60 yards. Anyone old enough to remember Lancaster's Barron Walker regularly competing in the 60 indoors back in the early 80's? If memory serves me correctly, he ran in the 6.4-6.4 MT range!

Barry Walker still holds the Lancaster record in the 55M in 6.4HT, set at OSU in 1982.

I was at that meet, I believe. I also saw him run at the old Quad States meet in Bloomington in 1982.

In 2001 at the Elder Invitational I had a kid who won the shot, disc and 100.

I jest. At least at Anderson when I was a thrower we were smaller more athetic guys who for our size could book it. We put up a couple of good times if my memory service me right. I was the second biggest guy in the bunch at a 195.

I coached in the same conference when Walker threw and ran for Lancaster. He was a sub 11, high 60's, and high 190's. He won the 100, SP, and D in most meets.

Somewhat off topic here, but GlenOak's 2x state champion discus thrower Andrew White ran lead-off leg for their 4th place 4x100 relay. Headed to Wake Forest to throw.
Malvern's Kelsi Hulit who placed 2nd in the DIII girls discus and 5th in the shot put ran on their 9th place 4x100 relay. Headed to West Liberty State to play basketball and throw.
In 1979, a young man from Massillon Perry named Steve Fink won the HJ, LJ, SP, and Discus at the sectional meet. He might be the only Ohio schoolboy to ever win 4 field events at the sectional/district level. He eventually won the AAA LJ title that year and placed 3rd in the HJ.
I remember some years ago of a boy from Akron Hoban who won the 100 and the shot put in a dual meet at my school. A couple years later, he anchored their "fat man" relay to a victory over us. We had a nice lead when he got the baton, but I remembered who he was and knew what was coming. He ended up being a DI collegiate defensive end at Tennessee and is currently on an NFL roster as a linebacker.
