Belgium controlled the action but their spacing was terrible. They tried everything from the middle of the field and France had the middle clogged. They never tried to widen the field until the final minutes when they were in panic mode.

Great match today. Hate England but hope they win tomorrow so France can pummel them in the final.

An England-France final would be classic.

Last World Cup, I felt Germany was clearly the best team and deserved to win it all. This World Cup, France has been the best, but I'm still pulling for the Three Lions. The best team doesn't always win (ex: Russia v. Spain).

England-France would be a pretty cool final, but also would be epic to see Croatia stun the world

Perfectly placed free kick from Trippier. Will be interesting to see if the early lead loosens up England to attack more or causes them to complacently sit back and defend.

It seems Sterling is just too fast for their defense and the vaunted Croatian middies have not been doing much so far. Really should be 2-0 if Kane didn't choke away that bunny shot.

England was looking at a 7-1 type beating in the final. Better that they just lose now.

Croatia needs about a week off before the final. I expect France will run them into the ground

Not this time. Germany is not the opponent.

Right now there is a match at Wimbledon in the 5th set that just hit the 6 hour mark, I don't hear any calls for them to have a serving contest to decide the winner. Maybe the World Cup should just play on like the tennis players when a match is tied after regulation.

Many of the players can barely make through 120 minutes as it is. To go to an unlimited extra time/golden goal platform, there would have to be unlimited substitutions. There's really no good way to do it in soccer.

Yeah but the tennis players have no subs and they just play on. Kind of interesting to watch the tennis match as the amount of aces and unforced errors in the 5th set is insane. For soccer I would say no to unlimited subs but I think a golden goal would force offense and eventually there would be a defensive breakdown, probably in the midfield, that would lead to a scoring chance and a W decided by play.

I'm torn on the final. I've never been a big fan of France, but they are probably the most talented. I really didn't care for Croatia's reported cockiness and taunting of England after their match. IDK, I'll probably decide as the match progresses.

My predictions:

3rd Place - Belgium 3 England 1 (Belgium is just too good for England)

Final - France 2 Croatia 1

They had golden goal before in the 90s, I think. The opposite happened; teams just bunkered on defense and played for penalties.

The best solution I think would be to make everyone available again and play 9 v 9 (8 outfield players + GK). It would open up so much space, I think we'd see far fewer PKs.

For a 3rd place game, that was pretty exciting. Lots of good chances for both teams, but, as expected, Belgium was better.

One to go!

Tough to take any sport where the French are the best in the world seriously.

Croatia played with a lot of hustle and heart and controlled most of the game, but too many critical errors against a team as good as France will kill you. France was deserving of the title though...I thought they were the best team throughout the World Cup.

Luka Modric wins Golden Ball for best player in the tournament. I thought it was a tossup between him and Antoine Griezmann of France. Mbappe wins Best Young Player...hands down.

No major controversies in the entire Cup...maybe the VAR had something to do with that. Overall, the best World Cup that I can remember.

Not sure I would have given the penalty for the handball. Didn’t look like the ball was into goal. But overall it was a good effort from Croatia. Disappointed they couldn’t pull it out

I may be wrong but I don't think it has to be on goal within the box to award a penalty kick in that situation. Any touch by the hand is enough and he clearly touched it.

True, his hand was away from the body and it changed the direction of the ball. Definitely a penalty shot.
