Norton considers using DragonCam on Interstate 76 to nab speeders

It looks like Norton wants to create a speed trap and raise some easy money for their city...

Quote:
As the number of traffic crashes escalate along Interstate 76 thanks to a massive, ongoing highway project, Police Chief John Dalessandro says he has to do something to improve safety there.

His pleas for people to slow down and pay attention through the busy construction zone havenít worked.

So the police chief has proposed an unusual solution.

He wants to contract with Blue Line Solutions of Chattanooga, Tenn., to provide the city with a special hand-held laser equipped with a camera to nail speeders.

The owner of the vehicle would receive a $200 civil ticket in the mail without having any interaction with authorities ó similar to how so-called cop-in-a-box programs operate.

Speed isn't nearly as big of a factor in many accidents that people make it out to be.

Leaving space between other vehicles and factoring in weather conditions is significantly more important to safety than arbitrary speed limits.

This stretch of road IS dangerous and the main culprit is unusually narrow lanes (even for a construction zone)
Due to how narrow the road is, people drifting out of their lane ever so slightly could be disastrous going 50 or 100. People need to stay off their phones in this area. That'll solve more issues than ticketing people for speed.

Norton speed camera busts 9,352 drivers in two months, generating up to $1.1 million

Quote:
A speed camera, used by Norton police in the I-76 construction zone, could generate $1.1 million for the city after more than 9,000 civil violations were mailed to drivers.

According to statistics released by the city, 9,352 civil speed violations were issued between Sept. 10, 2018 and Oct. 31, 2018. The fine per violation is $200.

Norton keeps 60 percent of the revenue collected. The rest goes to Blue Line Solutions which makes the camera, known as DragonCam.

In the first seven weeks, the violations added up to $1,870,400, meaning Norton is in line to receive up to $1,122,240.
