Up 3 With Time Running Out - Do You Foul?

I'm sure this has been visited in the past on another thread. Up 3 near the end of the 4th quarter or overtime. Opponent has possession and they're in the bonus. More than a couple seconds on the clock. Do you foul or not?

I know of two instances where it occurred over the weekend in district finals in Northwest Ohio. Saw one in person and the other on video. In both cases, team with the ball hit a 3. One sent a game into overtime; the other sent a game into a second overtime. Both teams that hit the 3 are still playing.

Always easy to second guess but interested in where people stand on this.

Foul, foul, foul.

Making a 3 only takes 1 good play.

If you foul it takes 1. a made foul shot 2. a missed foul shot that hits the rim 3. a rebound 4. a put back - just to tie or 5. a kick out 6. a catch 7. a made 3 pointer to lose.

In the Genoa/Stritch game I wanted him to take it from deep before they got near him because I thought they were fouling for sure.

I would want a shooter in-bounding the ball, trailing the play to drop the ball off to and take a deep 3 just to try and avoid the foul.

Some big plays in the last 1:45ish of regulation:

Genoa up 1
Corner 3 Stritch up 2
Banked 3 from the top of the key with under a minute to go Genoa up 1
Loose ball rebound after a Stritch miss, bodies all over the floor
Ball kicked ahead, Stritch defender gets trucked along the sideline prior to monster dunk Genoa up 3
Stritch fouled on a 3
Make 1 of 3 foul shots Genoa up 2
Genoa fouled make 1 of 2, Genoa up 3 with :10 to go
Timeout Stritch
Stritch 3 pointer to tie with about 3 seconds to go
Genoa shot from half court misses at the buzzer

Everyone on both sides shocked at what they just saw.

Stritch makes 10 of 11 FT to pull away in 2nd OT.

If you foul before he gets into the act of shooting, id say go for it.

Coach should get fired for not fouling inside 10 seconds. Half court shots not included. Most won’t foul and it usually doesn’t turn out well.

Yes, foul. You just have to make sure your kids understand you can NOT foul them when they're shooting a three. Have to get them well before that. Kids can do scary things some times.

cchs1983 is an unknown quantity at this point
It should be practiced and an automatic as part of a normal game plan. Every coach has a special to run on O at the end of quarters, same thing should be installed for your D

I wouldn't say it was a prayer. The kid that hit it has made 150 or so 3's in HS most from that spot. He hit one in the same spot on the same court last year to win a game at the buzzer. I would also say it's Crestview's go to play when they need a shot.

This is something that you'd better practice doing fairly regularly if you're going to try it in a tournament game.

IMO really depends on where the ball is being inbounded.. Back court, front court or SOB. 10 sec or less I'd foul. We all have seen teams (March Madness) get burned for not fouling and the opposing team hits a 3. Good for conversation

Foul is the play.

But what has not been mentioned here is the impact of pressure. Pressure can make professionals wilt(JR Smith in Game 1 of the finals last season), it can make D1 players forget what they are doing(Auburn this past weekend, Pearl said the kid was supposed to commit the foul, but just didn't).

This can be practiced, but even though committing a foul seems like an easy thing to do, most of what kids are doing on the floor is based on reactions occurring in split seconds.

Adrenaline+Big Crowd+Pressure=Unpredictability

Under 10 seconds left foul 1000%. Above 10 it's a lot harder choice of course
