Thanks! Do the tiers all play each other? Do they count all games between tiers as league games?

No, they do not all play each other. They do however have crossover games as Lake plays Hoban, CCC, JFK, and Gilmour. I’m not sure if those games count as a league game.

I believe so considering every team plays 2-3 teams from the opposite tiers. If I recall to VASJís schedule, they play CCC, Hoban, and Benedictine for in tier games twice and play Walsh and Padua from tier 2 once, while from tier 3 they play Gilmour, Warren JFK, and Aquinas once as well. I think it will be a home and home basis then rotate to the next set of teams 2 seasons later.

So far in non-conference play there have been some good wins, both CCC and Benny beat Solon and VASJ took down Cleveland Heights. Not to go SEC football but these are solid wins against high level Division I programs that should help the conference perception when it comes to seeding. League play really gets going this Friday and the new top Division has a pair of nice match ups that should help sort the early season pecking order.

Iím really looking forward to this new format in basketball. It adds intriguing conference match ups we havenít seen since the mid 00ís with VASJ and Chanel (RIP) or CCC and vise versa battling each other in packed gyms and playing a 3rd time in the post season. Those were the best games to watch back then when the NCL had everyone playing each other.

What is the reason for Walsh not being in the top tier? Aren't they one of the largest enrollment member schools?

The NCL could send two teams in D2 to the state final 4.

They based it off of basketball prestige and recent performance. The NCL knew they would get the best games out of VASJ CCC Hoban and Bene playing each other twice compared to say Iím gonna use Joes as an example, VASJ beating the living daylights out of a team like Trinity, NDCL, Aquinas, Walsh and play twice a year where they can get a competitive games based off the current tiers

Kind of interesting in that I do not think there is some official form of promotion or relegation like in the various pro club soccer leagues. I think it is basically up to the program where it wants to play and if things go to severely one way or another they AD is taken out into the hall at the NCL meetings and is "shown the light" so to speak. The only program miss-placed this year is Lake Catholic. They should be in the top Division but then who would you drop? Also they play CCC and Hoban from the top Division plus there are plenty of Independent games like Iggy, Solon, & Mentor to get them ready for the state playoffs.

A BB realignment we need to occur over the next couple of years with Trinity and STA leaving. It might end up:

Benedictine
CCC
Hoban
Lake Catholic
VASJ

Gilmore
JFK
NDCL
Padua
Walsh

This format could be it for next season and would be a very brutal conference schedule for the Blue division and I can see having 2 or 3 additional crossover games.

Lake has two solid players but I saw where Willoughby South beat them by double digits last week. Benny, CCC and VASJ already have solid wins to legitimize their preseason rankings and VASJ gets a first hand look at Hoban this week. I know Hoban was solid last year but I do not know what they lost and what they have coming up to replace those kids. They always seem tough though. IMO the Benny, CCC and VASJ head to heads are going to be very enjoyable.

Solid win by the Bengals. I expected them to win at home - the margin was a bit of a surprise.

The Joe's vs Hoban game was a OT thriller that had a bit of everything.

These 4 teams are going to beat each other up.

I think this new 4 team Divisions set up is great, a round robin home/home schedule against schools of similar ability that leaves plenty of dates open for good OOC match ups doesn't stink. Too bad St. Thomas & Trinity will be leaving to muck things up. Maybe the conference picks up basketball only schools for the smaller schools like a Cornerstone or Lutheran East. Or another option is to allow in Iggy & Ed's to the top group and go back to a 6 school Division.

We will know a lot about the upper division of the NCL this week as Benedictine travels to play a tough, physical and angry Hoban team who is coming off a OT loss to VASJ. The Vikings will also leave the comfort of home to play their fierce rival CCC who is also coming off a loss at Benedictine. I expect both home teams to really make it hard for the Bengals and Vikings to return home with a W.

Most folks probably don't realize but these are all tough old school gyms to play in and home court advantage is real at all four. I would not be surprised if both home teams win tonight and this thing is tied up after 2 games. Here is bengals wrestling's breakdown of these gyms:

Benedictine: Old and musty but has a lot of character. The west baseline has a metal cage that contains a metal spiral staircase that leads down to the wrestling room.
CCC: Small, visitors stands are on the stage. No windows and no ceiling fans, leads to no air circulation. Gets very hot, very quick.
VASJ: Nice layout, bad floor. See above. Balcony behind the basket closest to 185th street provides additional seating to add in more fans for big games as well as a VIP seat section in front of the stage.
Hoban: Worst gym in the NCL. Small. You have to walk in front of the visitors bench to get to half of the stands. Distracting to players and coaches.

I agree with Auggie. I feel both the Vikings and Bengals have the talent advantage tonight- the home court will be a big equalizer.

Plus the Vikings have the coaching edge tonight. No one knows how to motivate their team like Coach Babe. The way he speaks to the kids really gets them to play with an edge. If they didn't play with that edge they most likely would get their azz beat more often.

VASJ was able to get a tough road win at CCC 75-71 in OT.

Hoban gave Benedictine their first loss of the season 59-45 at home.

Benedictine came of a loss at Hoban Friday night by losing a close one at home 67-64 to Toledo St. Francis. That was a pretty tough back to back for the Bengals who now fall to 5-2 after opening the season with 5 wins.

The word is that the Benedictine head coach had a pretty big medical scare. This holiday season keep him in your prayers and hope for a fast return to the Bengals sideline. He has done a great job rebuilding the Benedictine program and has made our conference even more competitive. Get well soon Coach Rob.

The original diagnosis was bad but it appears to be not as dire, hopefully Rob will be back soon as he was missed on the sideline.
