State of the Buckeyes (and Big Ten)

1. Barrett has regressed to the point where I don't believe he could win a legit open competition for the starting QB job. He presents no vertical threat, so defenses can just pack the box.

2. OSU does have a solid corps of fast game breakers at WR, but they are close to useless because Barrett can't reach them deep. Go back and listen to Saban's post game presser following the Sugar Bowl loss to OSU. He said it wasn't apparent on film that OSU had so many playmakers when Barrett was QB, but it became apparent only when Jones took over.

3. Tim Beck must go. Sadly, he's done a great job of recruiting the Dallas area for the Buckeyes, but he has failed as OC and QB coach...or, maybe he is good at both but Barrett is the limiting factor? It's doubtful Urban throws Barrett under the bus, or himself, so Beck probably takes the hit.

4. The new OC should mean Ed Warinner heads back to just coaching o-line and they fire Strudrawa....a coach who was fired by LSU because he couldn't develop linemen or teach pass protection well enough. How did a failure like that find a job with Meyer?

5. Bama loses players every year too, but never skips a beat and certainly doesn't get blown out like this. Saban is not afraid to make changes to staff or philosophies. Meyer needs to take a hard look inward.

6. Don't be surprised if a few of the out of state elite recruits jump ship after last night. This was a very bad look for the program.

7. It doesn't matter that Wisky beats WMU, since it's just a win over a MAC school, so after Penn State gets rolled by USC the B1G will officially be back where they were a few years ago when they were regarded as overrated and the weakest of the Power 5. The last two playoff teams from the B1G were outscored 69-0 and looked totally overmatched.

I honestly cannot imagine a Buckeye fan anywhere excited to see JT back again next season. He has pretty much become Stanley Jackson. A lot of wins, but not really a game changer for the positive. Jackson finally gave way to Joe Germaine. I doubt Urban ever sits JT, though.

Remember a couple of days ago when OSU fans were up in arms about the Clemson player's declaration that JT was not the best quarterback they had faced? " Bulletin board material," they all screamed. Seems he was right after all.

As far as Beck, who really knows if it's him as the problem? When Burrow comes in he throws a beautiful ball. They say Haskins looks great too. Maybe he's just stuck with a turd (Barrett) that can't be polished?

Not sure why anyone was upset. Most OSU fans have had the same complaint about JT all along.

Lol Buckeyes fans MIGHT be worse than UK basketball fans. It's a very close competition for most annoying/arrogant fan base.

Yes, but it might be chicken and egg. Play calling makes Barrett look bad, or does Barrett's skill set limit the play calling?

You need to get out more! Check out TideFans to see a fan base every bit as crazy & spoiled as we are! I suspect it goes with the territory of rooting for an elite program. As an added bonus M Bluth had a nice post there the other day!

I think the state of the Bucs is still good and they will be a top 10 team next year and compete for a playoff spot. For all my carping about "coaching" Meyer is an elite coach and as long as he captains the ship it will be in great shape.

The real question is the Big Ten. I thought they had made progress the last couple of years but you have to be disappointed in the conferences playoff performance since Ohio State's improbable National Championship in 2014. For the 2nd year in a row the B1G representative to the playoffs was obliterated. The conference has been outscored by a combined 69 - 0 over the last two years! This is the kind of effort that WILL give the committee pause next year in elevating a B1G one loss team over another P5 one loss team.

If you are concerned for the B1G you need to root hard that Whisky doesn't get beat by Western Michigan and that Penn State is not embarrassed by USC tomorrow.

Lol this coming from a Michigan fan who thought they deserved to be in the playoffs. Then lost to the 11th ranked team. Good stuff!

Pretty spot-on OP. Regarding Urban needing to take a look at the coaching staff, we've known this since mid last year. This game was just the worst they've been exposed.

The Big Ten will be fine because it has good coaches in the league right now. But Barrett needs to go, Tim Beck needs to go, and Urban needs to move Warriner back to o-line. He gave them all one year too many. Another year is simply unacceptable

I'm pretty sure if Nebraska fans were asked it would be a consensus that Beck was awful and he probably never should have been hired at OSU in the first place.

I believe that Burrow's father is a QB coach at OU. I doubt Beck has done one thing for him mechanically.

They may limit each other in a downward spiral of meh.

Burrow needs to be permitted to compete equally for the starting spot in a more dynamic offensive scheme. Beck needs to go, Warinner needs to stick to what he knows and shore up the line. No doubt about it.

Well, then his kid must have had some better help at the Plains than Beck has been able to share with his main focus, Barrett, because Barrett was a better passer 2 years ago. He was throwing timing routes, and not really going deeper until he hit a few and the D tried to play tighter, but he was pretty effective.

I'd guess then that Burrow has a better idea of how to attack a defense than most HS QBs waiting for their shot. His technical superiority as a passer to Barrett seems obvious, regardless of the source. All the more reason to give him a real shot.

Burrow/Haskins 2017.

Barrett shouldn't even be in the conversation. I believe he graduated so hopefully he transfers
