OHSAA 7th-8th Grade T&F Championships

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will conduct its Inaugural 7th and 8th Grade Track and Field State Championships on May 13, 2017, OHSAA Commissioner Dr. Dan Ross has announced. The event, which has been discussed for several years by the OHSAA’s Middle School Committee, was officially approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors at its October meeting.

Qualifying standards and state qualifiers will be coordinated through an online process at www.BaumsPage.com, with the one-day state championships set for Lancaster High School. Any running event time must be obtained at a regular-season meet using fully automated timing, Field events must be certified by an OHSAA licensed official. The top 16 performers in each event will qualify for the state championships. If a top 16 qualifier cannot attend, the next student-athlete on the performance list will be invited until 16 qualifiers are confirmed.

awesome. An actual event where you have to qualify on time. Should be a great event.

Not sure Lancaster is geographically great for the whole state. Why host a actual state meet in the least populated part of the state?

The meet is at Lancaster High School. Lancaster High School is only about 15 miles from NTR where the state XC meet is held. It's really not that bad of a location.

I think this is a good idea. But I do believe that they should have divisions, the same as the hs state meet. Also not very many junior high meets are automatically timed. It might be hard for some kids to find meets that can qualify them for the meet.

You can't just put a junior high in the same division as the high school it might feed, especially since it might feed more than one high school in two different divisions. Additionally some high schools like Mentor have three junior highs, but only one high school.

You would have to do a complete enrollment analysis, determine breakpoints, and then assign junior highs to appropriate divisions.

Dan Ross wants that money that parents have been paying for their kids to compete in the "Non Official" meet that has been held for years

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner!

Incidentally, that meet is still scheduled the weekend after the OHSAA version, at Dublin Scioto HS
