Willoughby takes over at Sidney - Sidney Daily News

After 30 years at Houston, John Willoughby has taken a giant leap, going from Division 4 to Division 1 Sidney this season. He replaces Andy Slaughter, who stepped down after leading the Yellow Jackets to a 17-8 record last season.

Willoughby was asked the difference in the two jobs.

"I don't know that I've met the biggest difference, and that would be the competition," he said. "But it's all relative. When you're at a big school, you're going to play against other big schools. The skill level should be better at a D-1 school, but the opponents skill level is too."

Willoughby answered early on the one question that is probably on the minds of most Sidney High fans -- how is Andre Gordon? The six-foot Gordon with amazing leaping ability was the Jackets’ main attraction last season, averaging 13.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, six assists and three steals per game as a freshman. Everyone was looking forward to watching him first play quarterback in football, but unfortunately his season ended after just one game and he required surgery on a broken wrist. But Willoughby said he’s “doing fine.”

"He's pretty much full go," said the coach. "He's getting after it at practice so that's a good sign. And he seems to be in good shape."

Having him back makes a successful season for Willoughby and the Jackets much more possible, but the coach is quick to point out that a lot was lost to graduation. And he’s right. Leading scorer Cameron Gallimore graduated and took with him a 14.5 scoring average and 54 made threepointers. He was a 44 percent field goal shooter, including an impressive 40 percent from three-land, and an ultra-impressive 84 percent from the line.

Also gone from last season is Lorenzo Taborn, who is now playing football at Bowling Green. Taborn was a wide-body and stood at 6-4, so it’s no surprise he was the leading rebounder at 7.4 per game. He also scored 10.7 per game.

“We lost quite a bit when you look at it,” Willoughby said. “A great shooting guard and a big inside player.”

But then there's Gordon.

“With Andre, I really don’t know all he can do yet,” said the coach. “And I’m looking forward to finding out. One thing, I think he could be a really outstanding defender. I think last year he picked his time to show what he could do as a defender. But he can shut people down. And people have questioned his jump shot, but I think he’ll surprise some people.”

Gordon has a pretty good supporting cast again this season, too. Willoughby has a host of players inside, including returnees Allec Gordon, a senior, and Devan Rogers, still just a junior. Both are in the 6-foot-2 range, but both possess strength and agility. Rogers averaged 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds last season and Gordon five points and five rebounds. In addition, there is 6-4 sophomore Ratez Roberts, who played in ten games last season.

“We’ll look to go inside a little more with Allec and Devan,” Willoughby said. “And Ratez was really one of our better players over the summer. Devan is a real smart player. He sees the floor and is a good passer, and I think his shooting will surprise some people.”

And he’s also pleased to have junior Isaiah Bowser back. Bowser just finished a record-setting football season, during which he shattered the single-season rushing record. He played in all 25 games last season and averaged six points, and Willoughby thinks that will increase this year.

“I like finding mismatches with Isaiah inside,” Willoughby
said. “He’s a heck of a player. He has that mentality where he’s going to compete all the time and he’s very athletic. Hopefully we can take advantage of that.”

There are also two other seniors along with Allec Gordon in Devonte Weatherspoon, a 5-9 guard, and Philip McCluskey, a 5-10 guard.

“Devonte and Philip need to find their spots,” said Willoughby. “Spoon can be a heck of a defender and is fun to watch in practice. Philip needs to work on what a point guard really is.”

The juniors along with Rogers and Bowser include Kelton Stockton, Ryan Hines and 6-4 Chris Lee, who Willoughby said may find a spot because of his rebounding. Sophomores along with Roberts are Jace Conrad, Josiah Hudgins and Keith Lee.

“We have plenty of kids that can score and Jace is one of them,” the coach said. “Josiah is very athletic and a capable offensive player. And he can be a stopper on defense. Keith is a smart player who can shoot the ball well.”

Willoughby said this team should be able to take advantage of its speed by getting the ball down the floor quickly. But he said there will also be times the Jackets will need to execute an offense.

“And that’s what we need to get better at, getting teammates open, and moving the ball a little more. And for us to compete with the teams we play, we’re going to have to defend very well, rebound and execute on the offensive end.”

Willoughby built his Houston teams on defense and that hasn’t changed with his move.

“I think this can be a good defensive team, but we’ll have to make up for our lack of size,” he said. “The kids have great anticipation. They like to play defense but they don’t like to sustain the defensive effort, and that has to change. And I’m not sure we will pick up full court. We will at times, but I don’t think that will be our staple.”

Looks like you pulled the schedule from the GWOC site. The game against Piqua on December 16th is a Home game per SCS's website

Link

I'm excited to see this team play. They're young and will need to grow as the season goes. Obviously Andre will be exciting, but he needs others to step up and take away opposing defenses attention. I'm not a native of Sidney, but over the last 14 years I've lived here I'm constantly amazed that a town this size can't field more height than they do. It seems every year they struggle to find any kids taller then probably 6'2. There are a few exceptions, but far from the rule. It generally puts them at a size disadvantage against many of the schools they will face especially come tourney time.

Just don't have the genes around here for height I guess. Some schools have it, others don't. Butler had the fortune of two 7 footers on the same team once upon a time. I can't remember the last Sidney had a player taller than 6'7". Even then it's usually one kid with height and the rest are 5'9-6'2.

Well, either way it will be interesting to see how this year goes down. Hopefully they are able to grow a supporting cast around Andre. I'll be very interested to see how Whilloughby coaches them up. From what I've heard Andre wants to stay in Sidney, but I fear if Whilloughby rubs him the wrong way he'll bolt for greener pastures.

I'll admit I thought it was very shady how his hire went down (how Slaughter was non renewed and Whillougby just happened to resign before Slaughter being non renewed). I really wish there would have been more than a faux coaching search for the open position rather than the good ole boys network that seems to be prevailing in the Sidney BOE these days.

Why do you say that? I've never seen the guy coach. Is he the lose his mind type if calls aren't going his way?

He's probably the most T'd up coach in Shelby County League history. He grates on officials nerves. The veteran officials know how to deal with him but the younger ones usually don't tolerate much.

Scheu is the problem. Until he's out nothing will change. Also a big reason why we can't get a levy passed. As for Willoughby, he at least deserves a chance but he'll definitely be heavily scrutinized.

Opener tomorrow night at Bellefontaine. Finally time for some hoops.

Spot on with Schue. I've heard that with regards to him and levy's as well. Not to mention the agendas he has that are nothing related to success of the school. Hopefully he's not long for his position. I'd love for the school to find someone from outside the district to occupy the Superintendent's position. I'll give Whillougby a chance. I'm excited to see this team get out there and see what we have, unfortunately I won't be able to make tonight's game. So I'll be relying on you to keep me updated! Go Jackets!

Refs sound like trash. 10 fouls called on Sidney and only 1 on Bellefontaine in an entire half.

Side note:

Gordon played all 32 minutes. The broadcasters joked that he didn't even look like he was sweating in the 4th quarter. "Cool as a cucumber" as Jack Kramer put it.

Gordon has 30, Jackets win opener - Sidney Daily News

Sidney got out of the blocks fast and never trailed in defeating Bellefontaine 70-58 in the boys basketball season opener Tuesday night at Bellefontaine.

Sidney takes its 1-0 record into a double weekend at home, Friday against Tipp City and Saturday against Wapakoneta.

The Jackets started fast, rolling to a 13-2 lead just past the midway point of the opening quarter, with sophomore standout Andre Gordon scoring seven of those points.

Gordon then came up with a steal and got the ball ahead to Isaiah Bowser for another bucket and a 15-2 lead, and by the end of the opening quarter, the Jackets were rolling at 20-6, and Gordon had half of those points.

The Jackets slowed in the second quarter and Bellefontaine got a little bit of momentum going, cutting the lead to nine at one point at 22-13. But the Gordons, first Andre and then Allec, hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the lead up again.

The only problem facing the Jackets was fouls. At one point, Sidney had been whistled for nine teams fouls to just one for the host Chieftains. Three of those were on Allec Gordon.

Late in the period, the Chieftains got going and two straight buckets cut the lead to 26-20. But Ratez Roberts drained a three to pump the lead back up to nine at 29-20. Sidney led by seven at the half.

Sidney came out strong again in the third quarter, going on a 10-2 run to open up a 15-point lead at one point at 41-26. But again, the Chieftains came back and it was a 10-point lead with under two minutes to play. A three by Gordon with 1:20 left in the third upped it back to 13, but Sidney led by just seven again after three at 50-43.

Gordon than rang up his sixth three-pointer of the game to open the final period and put the lead at 10 again, and the Jackets stretched the lead to 61-47 with under four minutes to play on a Bowser three. Bellefontaine cut it to 61-53 but Bowser hit an old-fashioned three-point play to push it back to double figures.

Gordon had six three-pointers and finished with 30 points to lead the Jackets, and Bowser made it a strong one-two punch with 19.

“We got off to a great start,” said Sidney coach John Willoughby. “Bowser did a great job defensively on their best player. He only had two points at halftime, and that was part of the reason we started off so well. Andre had a great game, and we had other kids who stepped up and made big shots when we needed them.

“You never want to be playing your best in your first game,” he added. “And while I thought we played well, we came away knowing there are things we can improve on.”

I didn't get to attend the game but talked to some family last night after the game and they said Andre Gordan was shooting lights out. Good Luck Jackets on the rest of the season!

With Gordon's ability to penetrate if he adds a consistent outside shot, he'll be pretty much undefendable. Obviously he's not going to make 6 3's a a game, but enough of an outside shot to keep the defense honest.
