St. Marys 3, Kenton 0
ST. MARYS, OHIO – The Co-Western Buckeye League Champions secured their second straight Sectional Championship Thursday night as they downed Kenton 3-0 in front of a packed home crowd at Geiger Park.
An early pitchers duel between Roughriders starter Nathan Wilker and Wildcats hurler Tristan Reichelderfer kept both offenses bats cold in the opening innings, with just one hit each coming from the opposing offenses in the first four innings.
Reichelderfer kept St. Marys potent offense in check through the first four innings as three times they were sent down in order by virtue of a strikeout, flyout, groundout. The only Roughrider hit before the fifth came on a bloop into centerfield by Marshall Lininger. Lininger would steal second base two pitches later, but be erased as Tristan Becker struck out to end the threat in the third.
Kenton’s only hit in the first half of the contest would come from cleanup hitter Seth Conover who tapped one off of the end of the bat into left field for a single. Conover would reach second base on an error by St. Marys shortstop Dustin Howell whose attempt at a double play on a ball put into play by Dalton Kessler sailed into centerfield. Kessler would account for the second out of the inning as he was tagged out as part of a 1-6-3 doubleplay hit into by Trey Reichelderfer as the half inning came to a close with the score still tied at 0.
Following a Howell flyout to centerfield to open the inning, Josh Young was walked by Reichelderfer. With Young on second base due to a passed ball, Michael Hastreiter secured runners on the corners for the Roughriders by singling. Hastreiter stole second base moments later and put runners on second and third base for Austin Quellhorst following a Lininger flyout. Quellhorst used the end of his bat to put a ball in play just past the outstretched glove of Conover and drove in the games first two runs.
Quellhorst would only be credited with one RBI on the hit however as rightfielder Brandon Hottman was charged with a throwing error that scored Hastreiter to make it a 2-0 St. Marys lead heading to the top of the 6th inning.
Much like the Roughriders had done earlier in the game a number of times, Kenton was sent down 1-2-3 in the 6th by virtue of a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout.
St. Marys added one more run, an RBI single from Howell that scored Logan Maze who had singled earlier in the inning to run their lead to 3-0 heading into the games final half inning.
Having thrown just 70 pitches heading into the top of the 7th inning, Nathan Wilker headed back out to the hill for St. Marys and walked the opposing pitcher Reichelderfer following a full count. Conover accounted for the innings first out as he grounded out to first base moments before a fielders choice that put Kessler on first erased Reichelderfer on a 1-6-5 putout at second. Down to their last out of the game the Wildcats saw their season come to an end as catcher Travis Downing became the victim of the final out as he flew out to right field.
Nathan Wilker (6-1) picked up the win for the Roughriders while Tristan Reichelderfer (6-2) took the loss for the Wildcats for the second time this season at the hands of St. Marys.
St. Marys (16-5) will have a non-league regular season game at home on Monday against Fort Recovery (21-2) before heading to Bluffton on Thursday for a 2pm District Semifinal matchup against the Bath Wildcats, 13-0 winners over Upper Sandusky.
