It's no mystery that Mentor's style of play is a little different & probably more demanding than other programs some kids are accustomed to.
I thought all of Mentor's players grew up in the same development off of 615 ?

I know who this tongue in cheek comment is directed at, but I don't think any school can say they NEVER get a move-in that participates in varsity football/basketball. Because Mentor isn't open enrollment, these families do have to move in the district. That doesn't mean sports don't ever play a role in the decision, but Mentor is not racking up the transfer train.

In the 2000's, I can think of four players who moved to Mentor and played varsity basketball. One was a 6th man his senior year from West Virginia. By far the most significant transfer was Collin Barth several years ago from Olmsted Falls. The third and fourth are both on the current team. Both players moved in last school year and are seniors right now. Sims came from Euclid and 6'9 Xavier Cheek from Field High School. Cheek and Sims are helpful players to the program, but neither are the high profile type that move around NEO.

Mentor had a nice win over Bay yesterday, 91-70. Bay showed some grit in the first half to pull within three at halftime. Mentor blitzed the Rockets in the 3rd quarter and took control of the game. Korsok, at least 24 points in all of the first four games, was a little off yesterday and finished with 17 points. Good ball movement on Mentor's part. The defensive intensity and effort is great to see too.

I came away impressed by Bay. They have a good DII team and I expect them to be right there with Holy Name in their district. Their starting guards looked like strong shooters. Their big guy (Sunahara) blocked/altered a ton of shots. He is a nice player. Bay actually hit more 3FG (12) than Mentor (10).

Mentor's next game is home on Tuesday against Solon...the last team to beat the Cardinals (2016 district final). The Comets are better than any team Mentor has played so far. It should be a good one.

Any idea who Solon's leading scorer is thus far?

Too early to tell. State rankings don t start until early January. Will be better able to tell how good they are after next week, after they play Solon at home & at Elyria. I would think that they could be considered a top 10 team if they win both games.

I don't know, but they might make the top 10 in the initial AP poll when it comes out next Sunday. Mentor (5-0) will be playing Solon, Elyria, and McKinley before that point. A sweep of those three games makes them a lock in the top 10. If they go 2-1, it will be close.

If a school with a reputation like Mentor is 7-1 or 8-0, they are going to get AP respect around the state. Now, does that make Mentor a real top 10 team? Not necessarily. I haven't seen the top teams in the state (Jackson, St Eds, Moeller, Westerville South, etc.) to judge how Mentor would stack up. But so far I like what I have seen out of this team more than any Mentor team since the 2013 state champs.

I heard the McKinely game may be up in the air at this time. I heard neither team wants to play at 10 am on a Sunday. I totally agree with their feelings. Also, with 2 really good teams, why would U want them to play that early. How many fans will get to see this game at that time?

Not to mention BW is 40+ miles away from both schools. This game would be much better served at one of the schools on a Saturday night in January or February rather than at a neutral site on a Sunday at 10. Heard they are trying to change the time if possible, but I don't see that working out so close to game day.

On a related note, what is the incentive of playing in one of these events? Would Mentor get more $$ out of playing in this event rather than doing a two year home-and-home with McKinley?

Glad U remarked on this current situation. I think your suggestion is being discussed at this time. This game can draw a pretty good # of fans at either home site.

Mentor Basketball 2016-17

It was a close game throughout before Mentor finally pulled away halfway into the final quarter. Solon hit a lot of threes and they played good defense all night. The Comets are very small, but are a nice team. Mentor has a lot of turnovers, but were able to get the game at a pace they were comfortable with.

Sincere Carry is a very nice player. Steele too. Carry is great at driving and getting to the free throw line. Solon should be in good position to finish top 3 in the league.

Korsok ended up with 21 points, but most of that came late in the 4th from the free throw line. If I remember right, he was 10-12 in the final few minutes. It was good to see Mentor beat a good team without Korsok having a standout game. But in the future, it will be tough to win those games without a strong performance from their top player. Junior Matt Koski was fantastic tonight. He had 20 points.

He had 17. Carry hit on a long three early on, but he was doing his damage by getting into the lane and getting to the free throw line. He has a great combination of skills, speed, strength, and knowledge of how to use his body to draw contact. Manning Trubisky (primary guy guarding Carry) fouled out early in the 4th quarter due to the tough assignment. Carry did foul out in the final minute or so. Steele (20) and Gulley (16) were also top scorers for the Comets. Those two combined for seven three-pointers.

For the night, Solon hit 10 3FG. Mentor only made four. I would be curious to know the last time Mentor hit that few 3FG in a game. The Cards were not shooting a ton of them though. They attacked the paint and did their damage inside.

Although Mentor did not perform to their standards last night, they still played well enough to win against a good Solon team. Good teams are going to have those kinds of games during the season & they learn a lot about themselves as a unit on what they need to work on to get better. I think one of Mentor s strengths is the coaching staff,s ability to make effective halftime adjustments. In most of their close first halves, they come out in the third quarter & make those strong 8-10 point runs or intensify their defensive efforts & are able to control tempo.

Scheduling changes & communication issues forced Mentor coaching staff & Athletic department to make decision not to play at BW on Sunday

That's good. I guess that means Mentor/McKinley will try to schedule eachother in Stark or Lake before the season is over OR the two will just wash their hands clean and try to schedule someone else. Seems like option #1 is best, but that would require both sides to agree on where to play (Mentor or the Fieldhouse). I would be thrilled if the game were in Mentor for the sake of my drive. But McKinley's home court is pretty great.

McKinley already has a new opponent for the event either a senate league team or New Day Academy.

Mentor falls to Elyria last night, 74-69. Mentor was outscored 21-10 in the 4th quarter after leading for most of the game. Elyria was led by Antonio Blanton with 28 points. Mentor was led in scoring by Korsok once again with 16 points.

http://www.news-herald.com/sports/20...eadliner-74-69

Huge win for Elyria. Tough loss for Mentor. The Cards continue GCC play next week with a game Tuesday at Shaker and back home on Friday against undefeated Medina.

Mentor won at Shaker last night, 73-59. It didn't sound like a very well played game until the 4th quarter for Mentor. Korsok got back to his high scoring ways with 26 points. Mentor's three-point shooting woes continue. In my estimation, unless someone is WIDE open, this team should not be shooting from the outside too much. Kryz has the green light from anywhere, any time. Outside of that, the shooting is not super strong. Korsok and Trubisky can get hot from the outside. This team's offensive strength is attacking the rim. Good to see Sims was tied for second in scoring with 8 points. Any impact he makes will be huge.

GCC Standings:

Medina 5-1 (10-1 overall)
Mentor 5-1 (7-1)
Elyria 4-1 (8-2)
Solon 4-2 (8-2)
Brunswick 3-3 (8-5)
Strongsville 1-4 (3-7)
Shaker 1-5 (5-7)
Euclid 0-6 (0-11)

Big games on Friday as Mentor hosts Medina while red-hot Elyria hosts Solon. The Comets could be tied for 2nd with a win over Elyria. The Mentor/Medina winner will be at the top of the league standings. Brunswick, the 5th place team, is the only GCC team to beat Elyria so far. When Strongsville gets their talented transfer eligible after 11 games, they are certainly going to be improved. Shaker is no slouch as they proved against Mentor last night. Not getting the wins, but they are still a tough team to put away.

Saw Mentor demolish Medina last night 89-67 at Mentor & IMO looked like a championship caliber team. Their defense was so intensive & really bothered Medina bringing the ball up the court & had to work very hard for a decent shot. It will be interesting to see if Mentor continues to play as they did last night. Median is a very good team & will meet again at Medina in about 3 weeks.

Yesterdays win at Medina was the best of the season. Team defense was good. The offense was strong inside and out. Korsok got hot and had a very efficient game. Junior Matt Koski had a nice game again and he is really becoming an X-factor for this team. I see some real potential in his game. Hope it continues.

Mentor has three games this week: North (home), Brunswick (home), and the big one at Jackson on Saturday.

When the game was close in the first half, Medina did a lot of their scoring inside. They don't have a post presence, but their guards and wings attack.
