Canadian View: Why Canada Is Able to Do Things Better

Quote:
When I was a young kid growing up in Montreal, our annual family trips to my grandparents’ Florida condo in the 1970s and ‘80s offered glimpses of a better life. Not just Bubbie and Zadie’s miniature, sun-bronzed world of Del Boca Vista, but the whole sprawling infrastructural colossus of Cold War America itself, with its famed interstate highway system and suburban sprawl. Many Canadians then saw themselves as America’s poor cousins, and our inferiority complex asserted itself the moment we got off the plane.

Decades later, the United States presents visitors from the north with a different impression. There hasn’t been a new major airport constructed in the United States since 1995. And the existing stock of terminals is badly in need of upgrades. Much of the surrounding road and rail infrastructure is in even worse shape (the trip from LaGuardia Airport to midtown Manhattan being particularly appalling). Washington, D.C.’s semi-functional subway system feels like a World’s Fair exhibit that someone forgot to close down. Detroit’s 90-year-old Ambassador Bridge—which carries close to $200 billion worth of goods across the Canada-U.S. border annually—has been operating beyond its engineering capacity for years. In 2015, the Canadian government announced it would be paying virtually the entire bill for a new bridge (including, amazingly, the U.S. customs plaza on the Detroit side), after Michigan’s government pled poverty. “We are unable to build bridges, we're unable to build airports, our inner city school kids are not graduating,” is how JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon summarized the state of things during an earnings conference call. “It’s almost embarrassing being an American citizen.”

Canada's investment in Hong Kong refugees paid off big time and they even got the refugees to pay for the privilege.

They did learn from us how to kill. Toronto's murder rate, including gun murder is going up, while NYC's is declining.

Honestly, we cannot even begin to approach their raw materials per unit population rates. The place pays for itself just as Alaska does. It's a bit of an apples and oranges comparison. It's a great place, a nice place, a different place. Not a comparable place. Any "insecurities" he claims Canadians had, if they had them, would be on them and misplaced besides.

Canada has little brother syndrome. It has 10% the population and that population mostly lives in a narrow band within 200 miles of the US border. They have much fewer infrastructure needs, so of course they're able to pay for upgrades more often.

Their biggest point of bragging is their healthcare system, which has medical staff shortages because so many move to the US, and wait times/lines are so long, doctors are suing the government to allow more private clinics.

One of the things that I've noticed about Canadians is that any time some Canadian movie or music artist strikes it rich in his native country, the first thing he does is move to the USA.

Infrastructure has to be much simpler to build and maintain there. I'd imagine that easily over half of the country lives along the U.S. border between Michigan and New York, as well as in Vancouver along the border with Washington. Everything else is very sparsely populated. It's a very apples to oranges comparison with the United States.

Winnipeg and Calgary are the true Canadian cities. Vancouver is 60% Asian, 40% hippies. Toronto is like 65% foreign. Montreal is Quebecois.

Parents go to Florida in the winter and have good friends come Canada whom come down as well. How they discuss their health care system is an absolute JOKE. It takes absolutely forever to get anything done. One got their knee replaced, after waiting nearly two years, and at that time scheduled to have the second one done even though it wasn't bad yet but they didnt want to wait until it was needed and then wait forever to get the other done.

Every country is struggling for doctors and particularly specialists. I've had relatives have long waits for non-emergency surgeries and it can take 3-4 months to get into a specialist.

Not knowing much about their system, what is it specificifically that causes it to be "slower" than ours?

You could just as easily argue that those cities would be even worse under Republicans and that Democrats have made the best of difficult situations with governing large urban centers.

I've looked at moving to Canada before, for professional reasons. It seems like a nice enough country, but it has its own problems, and I absolutely hate winter weather.

One area Canada is definitely ahead of the USA, is that pot smoking is legal.

I wouldn't necessarily call that "ahead" of the US.

Long wait times are much less common in the US than Canada, which is astounding when you consider how many more people there are here. It can take someone 5-6 months just to see a gastroenterologist up there and that's after seeing a family doctor or going to walk-in clinic several times beforehand. Even with cancer patients, the wait times for chemotherapy, radiation, and follow-ups can be absurd. Those that can afford to do so will make the trip down to the US to seek more immediate attention. It's mostly the result of socialized medical care. When the service costs so little, more people go and people tend to go for more things. It clogs up the system. The lower pay (and higher taxation) compared to the privatized health care system in the US results in many doctors and nurses moving here. It's become more common since both countries began using the same exams.

How could one argue that due to the fact that Rs haven't been in control of these cities for at least 50 years?

Just don't talk about how Guiliani turned NYC around or how Democratic leadership has done it's best to send it careening back to 70s/80s hellhole status

Fact that either Jacksonpolar will ignore or try to make it look like Guilliani was a racist or something stupid.

Makes sense, since no one in the business likely knows you up there.

They're a nightmare with basically everything they touch, so I don't envision them being somehow "uniquely great at urban renewal".

I don't disagree that Democrats generally do a lousy job of governing, but I'll take disappointing over horrifying, until the left can fix them into a proper party.

Now that was an informative reply! I used to travel to New York on business before Guiliani was mayor and it was a cess pool. I stayed in hotels near Time Square and was warned not to go out at night walking around. After Guiliani cleaned up the mess you can go almost any where now in New York and not fear for your life.

NotJerad likely never was in NYC when Rudy was mayor. That's the only logical explanation for such ignorance.
