While the Panthers start day 2 with eight in the championship bracket and five in the consolation bracket, second place Lake Catholic has eight (106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 152, 160, and 170) and one (145), while third place St. Ignatius has five (106, 120, 132, 160, and 195) and four (113, 138, 170, and 182.) POTP,
Thanks for the updates! This is not meant to be a slam, just curious: what has happened to Moeller wrestling?

Well, they're in sixth right now, and they have Ward and Thompson, who are plenty tough, but you are right, overall they are down from a few years ago. I don't know if they're just in a down cycle, and have good talent coming up in their youth program, or what.
Maybe someone in the Cincy area who follows things knows why and can comment.

Congrats to the Panther grapplers for successfully defending their CIT title! They had five champions (Doepker, Weathersby, Murphy, Sanders, and McCloud), one second (Belcher), three thirds (Geiser, Collins, and Lipps), two fourths (Klaserner and Feldman), and one sixth (Jones). Elder had 275.5 points, Lake Catholic 200.5, and Chaminade Julienne 158.0.

Fresh off their CIT title, the Panther grapplers have a short week of practice as they prepare for a dual Thursday night at Oak Hills and a dual Friday night at The Pit against Fairfield, which presumably will be Senior Night.
Oak Hills is led by state qualifier Justin Taylor and district qualifiers Chase Haehnle and Adam Goldfuss. Fairfield is led by state qualifiers Zach Schupp (#16 nationally by InterMat, second last year at 106) and Jabari Thomas (eighth last year at 120) and district qualifiers Moustapha Bal and Amar Thomas.
The action starts both nights at 7:00; Senior Night probably will be streamed.

CIT notes
The Panthers have won the CIT two years in a row.
Collins lost in the quarters when Mathew Stauffer of Benedictine pinned him, but Collins then teched Stauffer in the third place match, 16-0.

Concerning the duals tonight and tomorrow night, this year there have been only six Elder and Oak Hills/Fairfield head-to-heads, all coming at the Sample. For what they’re worth:
126: Jack Collins lost dec Jabari Thomas (Fairfield), 11-6
132: Seth Lambers pin Bobby Von Allmen (Oak Hills)
132: Seth Lambers maj dec Brandon Sperry Fairfield), 11-1
145: Chucky Lipps lost dec Amar Thomas (Fairfield), 5-3
160: Austin Murphy pin Chase Haehnle (Oak Hills)
195: Tom Feldman lost dec Adam Goldfuss (Oak Hills), 4-0
Harrison has withdrawn from the state duals, leaving Elder, LaSalle, Oak Hills, and Colerain in next Wednesday’s Subregion 8-A-Upper.

Great crowd last night and it was awesome that they honored Coach Mike "Mighty" Masminster for his 30th year of coaching in the Elder Wrestling program. I can't say enough about the type of asst coach he was and the roll model he is for the student athletes he comes in contact with. He was "Right Hand Man" during tenure as Head Coach and this honor was well deserved. His whole family was there to see it also.

Congrats Coach Masminster and thank you for your service to Elder HS. Altiora!!!

They had to open the two bleachers at the west end of the gym to accommodate the crowd, and the fans were treated to a great match. Two matches especially stood out for me. First, Klaserner came thisclose to pulling out a 2-1 win against Sperry. His takedown of Sperry came just a fraction of a second too late as time ran out.
Then senior Tyler Eshman, on Senior Night, in his first varsity appearance this year, was able to notch not just a win but a win by pin. Pretty cool.
And huge props to Coach Mike Masminster!

The brackets for Wednesday’s state duals Subregion 8-A-Upper show the Panthers seeded first and taking on Colerain, with LaSalle seeded second and taking on Oak Hills. Assuming the seeds hold, the Panthers and Lancers will meet in the nightcap for the right to advance to the regional semis next Wednesday, site to be announced.
These would be the matchups if everyone is available and wrestles at his “regular” weight:
106: Doepker vs. Dustin Norris
113: Geiser vs. Lucas Byrd
120: Jones vs. Antoine Allen
126: Collins vs. Casey Wiles
132: Lambers vs. Darnai Heard
138: Klaserner vs. E'lan Heard
145: Lipps vs. Conner Sands
152: Weathersby vs. ?
160: Murphy vs. Trey Sizemore
170: Belcher vs. ?
182: Sanders vs. Blake Wilson
195: Feldman vs. Michael Baker
220: McCloud vs. Garrett Bledsoe
285: Moore-Nash vs. Robert Brown
Of course, lineup tweaks by coaches in duals are par for the course, so who knows what Coach Roush and Coach Root might have up their sleeves. Regardless, plenty of close matchups should make for an exciting evening.
We all know the Lancers are a formidable team. Ranked #11 nationally by InterMat, they are led by Lucas Byrd (#7 at 113, third last year at 106) and E’Lan Heard (#13 at 138). Wilson was fifth last year at 182 and Bledsoe was eighth last year at 195. In addition, Allen, Sizemore, and Baker all were state qualifiers last year.
They finished eighth at this year’s Ironman, won the Dvorak Invitational (IL), and finished second at the Escape the Rock (PA) tournament. The thing is, they did this without having a wrestler at 145, 152, or 170 at the Ironman or the Dvorak, and similarly without at 152, 170, or 285 at Escape the Rock.
I don’t know about their dual and tri meets, but thus far it appears the Lancers have not had a regular wrestler at either 152 or 170. Now, maybe they have good wrestlers at those weights who have been injured all season but now are healthy and will be wrestling Wednesday; unlikely, and I haven’t read anything to that effect (which means nothing), but in any case I have no idea one way or the other. But if they don’t, these will be two weights where the Panthers will be favored to win and maybe also score some crucial bonus points.
As for 145 and 285, all I know is that freshman Conner Sands wrestled 145 at the ETR (1-2) and junior Robert Brown wrestled 285 at the Ironman (1-2) and at the Dvorak (eighth place).
I know it will be a weeknight, but if your schedule will permit, you should consider making a not-too-late evening of it. Maybe enjoy an early dinner at Mr. Jim’s Steakhouse and then head down to LaSalle and catch all the action in person (but leave your U-Haul at home!). Start time against the Cards is 6:00 p.m.
Be there. Aloha.

If the lineup stays the same and Lasalle does forfeit the 2 weight classes i am forecasting a 34 - 29 Elder win. I am not giving my match by match prediction to avoid any hard feelings. Murphy and Sizemore should be a great match and may be the deciding one at that.

Curious why the staff chose to move Geiser from 113 to 120 for the LS match. Did Jones at 120 get hurt in the Colerain match? If Byrd beats Geiser in a close match but doesn't get the pin, and everything else holds then Elder wins by 1. Absolutely shocked LS was able to pull this off even with 5 forfeits.
