I was hoping for a better game. As such I tuned a lot of it out. Kanter continues to look like a great "glue guy." He's far exceeded what I thought he'd do this year. Scruggs is pretty good at getting to the rim but lordy 1 assist to 5 TOs? Not good.

Xavier seems to go through one of these funks every year. Like everyone else, I'm at a loss to explain the poor caliber of play by so many players. The lack of defensive intensity bothers me probably more than anything. There's a lack of effort out there. I don't know why.

Yep.
I love Coach Mack but, as much as he preaches about toughness, his teams just wilt all too often when facing a challenge on the road. It's not so much that they lose, but do so without putting up much of a fight -- especially on the defensive end.

Nova game was disappointing but let's face it - NOVA IS BETTER. at every phase of the game.

that being said, Xavier didn't just turn into a "bad" team all of the sudden. they're good. with the chance to be great.

Big East won't be an easy league. if they get through the league with 4-5 losses, that's probably expected.

X will be fine. Tre and JP will get it together.

time for a bounceback win vs. Creighton.

games on the road and games at Nova are two different things. they don't lose bad on the road very often - except at Nova. you can't lump this game into all the other road games. it's totally different.

Agree to disagree

I think Xavier has had one season in the last 5 years being top 40 in KenPom defensive rankings

considering there are around 300+ D1 schools, if you're in the top 50, then you're in top 20%. that's not bad.

i'm not saying that they've never gotten blown out on the road besides Nova under Mack's tenure. it's obviously happened. but it's not the norm like "at Nova" has become.

Road record by year

2011/2012 7-8
2012/2013 6-9
2013/2014 4-9
2014/2015 7-10
2015/2016 8-3
2016/2017 4-8

so 5/6 years he has had a losing road record.
His road record during that time is 36-47.

Yeah they are road warriors.

This year for KenPom defensive efficiency they are 129
Last year 187
2015/2016 36
2014/2015 151
2013/2014 126
2012/2013 105

Yeah they are really good on defense

Yeah they are road warriors.
all i said was that if you think all their road games are like Nova, where they're getting blown out, they're not.

and i was thinking more about league road games, which are true road games. i believe your "road record by year" include tournaments and even BE tourney games. either way, i went back and looked at league road games and took out the Nova game and here's what i found:

YEAR Record in BE road games Avg Loss in those (not nova game)
17-18 1-2 9
16-17 4-5 11.5
15-16 8-1 9
14-15 3-6 5.4
13-14 2-7 10.5

not really getting blown out by other teams in the league on road like we are against Nova.

that was my point.

Never said all road games are like nova. I think it's more a mental thing for Xavier against Nova. However you do see trends with Mack, great tourney team, average defense, good offense, and struggles on the road. He is a good coach and only a handful of teams wouldn't trade coaches for him. Part of it is being in a tough league and some of it falls on him. However you can't be mad with his results in march

My stats were obtained from goxavier and they don't include neutral sites as road games.

4 of those 5 years you have an average road loss margin of 9+ in games they lost. That isn't a blow out but it certainly isn't very competitive

One thing BB I would find interesting is Mack's stats in month of March for team efficiency offensively and defensively. Probably top 25 in the country on an average basis of his years at the helm. You do see significant improvement at the end of the year (which shows how good he is). I think those efficiency ratings get lowered because of slumps in the early part of the season. Sans last year

You guys can argue your specifics, but all I know is what I've seen -- 2 consecutive road games against BE opponents (both good teams) in which almost everyone played anywhere from lousy to horribly. If it weren't for Kanter's outstanding performances, X would have lost by 30.

This isn't the end of the world. As I indicated earlier, X goes through a period like this every year. We seem to lose in bunches. We'll snap out of it. My concern, though, is that these poor performances are coming from everyone.

X truly needs a win at home against Creighton.

Three straight wins for Xavier over Creighton, St. John's, and now Seton Hall. They blew out Creighton and that was a nice road win over Seton Hall who is a ranked team.

should jump to 6 or 7 this week.

JP's follow dunk was better than his steal and dunk at Butler.

solid road win vs. SHU.

Nice comeback from the 2 poor efforts @ Providence and Villanova. X appears to have learned the lesson of bringing toughness every night. A very gritty effort, led by the inimitable J. P. Macura. He put them on his back and wouldn't let them lose.

I see Jerry Palm has them as a #2 seed; with Lunardi as a #3. Their bracketologies sound about right for now.

Bluiett hit the 2000 pt mark last night. I think he is in top 5 all time in scoring at X:

I believe it goes:

Larkin
West
Sato
Hill
Bluiett

easily has a chance to become 2nd all time as West only 2132 points.

he will probably get that in about 7-8 games, unless he goes off for a few in a row, then earlier.

Would have thought West might have had more than that still a ton of points though.

Where was Brian Grant on the list? I am sure he has to be top 5 in rebounding for Xavier

i did the math and this is assuming that Tre plays the max # of games possible (9 more league games, 3 BE tourney games, and 6 NCAA games, which means getting to the title game)

he would have to average like 39 points per game to get it.

My kid has been accepted to Xavier for next year, and we're huge basketball fans, so we've been watching whenever we get a chance. What the heck was the deal with the net last night? I took a 15 minute nap and the guy was still trying to change that thing! Lol.

I think the 1st net that they put up didn't match the one on the other end. The shape was different so they took it back down and reinstalled another one.

chance to get to #5 this week but probably won't be able to jump Duke who lost to #2 team.

my guess is we get to #6.

wouldn't be surprised to see Virginia jump to #1 over Nova. not sure if it's ever happened without #1 losing (probably has) but Virginia looks ridiculous. they are the only team i've watched this year and said "man, i hope X is NOT in their bracket come tourney time".
