Ron Masanek Fairfield Invitational Tournament 1/5 & 1/6

By looking at the schedule of some of last year's team:
(teams that are there)/ ////////// (teams that are not)
1. Fairfield/ ////////// 1. Butler
2. Harrison / //////////// 2. Clay, Oregon
3. Ross/ //////////// 3. Northmont
4. Campbell County, Ky / ////////// 4. Hewitt- Trussville, Al
5. Lakota East / ///////////
6. Winton Woods / //////////// 5. Piqua
7. Miamisburg / ///////// 6. Sycamore
8. Dixie Heights, Ky ////////////// 7. Cooper
9. Waynesville/
10. Lebanon/
11. Lakota West
12. McCallie School, Tn
13. Harrison, In
I could be wrong with some of the teams. Does anyone know have more info on teams enter? Usually this event has a nice turnout of a few dozen teams to kick off the new year after those holiday grind tournaments.

Not sure of which teams are attending, but looking forward to it. Always a good tournament!

Via trackwresling or team's website, this event is on their schedule. Some of the other schools were to secretive about sharing their schedule.

Harrison (OH) 101 - 8 semis
McCallie (TN) 95 - 7
Fairfield 73.5 - 5
West Laffayette (IN) Harrison 73 - 5
Oregon Clay 72.5 - 5
Hamilton Ross 64.5 - 5

Moon (106), Shupp (113), and R. Henry (285) all are nationally ranked; Henry has IN state medalist Crider in his semi.

Pretty solid field for a smallish sized tournament

Haven't been on this site for quite some time. Looked at Fairfield Tourn. to see brackets. Pretty surprised in loss of participation. Good tournament and great venue.

Few good final matches, even though the brackets looked hungry for more participants.

Harrison and Oregon Clay each placed nine, eight inside the top three. Harrison had five finalists, three champs; Oregon Clay just three finalists.

That McCallie School was for real; they didn't come visit Cincinnati for some Skyline chili and White Castles.

They were a complete and solid team but they had 9 wrestlers in the #1 or #2 seed spot and only 2 made the championship match.

Good news for Oregon Clay fans is that this was a good tourney for Clay. Somewhat of a young team. They sent 12 wrestlers and I believe 8 placed in top 3 and another took a 4th. Of those competing, only 2 are seniors (1 champ and a 3rd). 2 freshman (1 champ and a 3rd), 1 soph (2nd), and 7 juniors. I would expect they will have some wrestlers on the Green team that can move over to the Gold team as they get ready.

My understanding is that there is a pretty strong JH team at Fassett this year. That's good because they will have a lot of spots to fill in 2 years.

Overall enjoyable tournament. Good to get some out of area solid competition. Clay, McCallie and West Lafayette each brought some excellent competitors, whether or not they came for the Skyline Chili and White Castle is another question.

Two things that were highlights to this tournament for me.

First. The 106 lbs wrestler from Oregon Clay, Jacob Moon, is the finest wrestling technician I have seen wrestle in a Fairfield gym since Wille Wineberg. That young man knows how to wrestle. If you have a chance to watch him wrestle do so.

Second, something I do not remember seeing before (disclaimer: my memory is not, I forget.) but was very interesting to watch. In the 160 lbs championship match it was tied 3 to 3 through 2 periods. It truly looked like two evenly matched wrestlers. I was thinking it will come down to a late takedown. The Clinton Massie wrestle choose bottom, which I thought was smart. However over the next 2 minutes the Lakota West wrestler put on a clinic on how to ride and turn and before the 3rd period was finished he turned his opponent 5 times to score 15 pionts and earn a tech fall before the complete 2 minute period was over. One of the terrific highlights of the tournament.

Seriously? Don't make it to many matches?

Right. Moon had a nice tournament. Cornell Beachem( :40, :17, 1:31, :38) probably spent more time going to and from the mat than he did on it.

Thanks for noticing Darth, Cornell is very goal oriented so I gave him a goal and challenged him to get the most pins in least amount of time before the tourney began and that's what he went out to accomplish. There were some very good wrestlers in that weight class and Cornell even surprises me at times with what he is able to do. We still have a lot to clean up before the end of the year. Great job by Harrison...you can see all the off season training paying off. Those boys were wrestling every weekend. And congrats to Fairfield on hosting another well ran tourney. Good Luck to all and stay healthy!

First, you either need a nap or some Ativan. Just relax. So what if there is a little hyperbole in a statement on Yappi. The point is Jacob Moon is a great technician it is unfortunate you need that spelled out.

As far as seeing many matching in the Fairfield gym I go back to watching Chris Coffin. Between wrestling and watching matches in a FF gym it is too numerous to count.

Now go take take a nap you little crybaby.

Unsure why your so salty, when you're the one that made the idiotic statement. Jacob Moon is good and has potential to be great, but he's still a freshman. But technician, he isn't. He is a dominating wrestler, and clearly dominated at weak 106 weight class from this tournament. Let him win a couple of state tournaments before we compare him to Wineberg and Coffing, and many other state champs and placers that have been in that Gym, not just talking about Fairfield kids.

What I find amazing on this forum, is how people forget that these are opinions and just because you may disagree, it doesn’t necessarily make it "idiotic". My question to “Natination13” is, were you at the tournament to watch the same matches he watched?

Lol.. My short time on this site, I’ve noticed this “fact”... Many will complain if another kid is getting the recognition “they” feel their kid deserves! So in my opinion that is “fact”..

I was at the tournament, I also saw all of his matches from Ironman and Brecksville. He is a tremendous talent. But to claim he is a technician is a little premature. To compare him to some of the Fairfield greats or any other accomplished local wrestlers, is what I questioned. I'm curious on why you came to that conclusion. I'm curious just what techniques you learned from watching him wrestle that you never saw before. I guess I'm not allowed to respond when someone takes a shot at me (graceunder). I'm only talking wrestling, I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

"He is a tremendous talent". I agree. To clarify I really enjoyed watching him wrestle like I enjoyed watching Willie Wineberg wrestle. From one fan of high school wrestling to Yappi Nation, if you get a chance to watch him, Jacob Moon, wrestle I believe you will enjoy it as much as I did.

To Jacob Moon and his friends, and family I did not mean to use your name in a thread like this. It was meant to be a simple and sincere complement about a young wrestler who, in my opinion, must put in many dedicated hours because he looks like he has great technique to me. I believe you have a future in the sport of wrestling.
