Consensus #1 NCAA Rankings 1/11/18

There hasn't been a bdhof ranking since before Christmas, as the venues have been inconsistent, only three posting updates each of the past two weeks. But a lot has happened. Dean Heil lost two straight matches after winning 55 in a row (and two NCAA titles). The Midlands and Scuffle had some surprises. More on that later. Iowa just announced that it would pull 125 Spencer Lee's redshirt. IMO, this puts Iowa in or near the top four, and I'll drop MICH from these rankings. The field behind tOSU and PSU is crowded, including OKST, NCST, Iowa, MICH, and even Lehigh and MIZZ in some polls. This group remains 60 or more points behind tOSU, who leads in all tournament polls now. While tOSU's lead over PSU continues to grow, 5 NCAA champs will keep PSU in the race. And PSU likely will pull the redsirt from 141 Nick Lee. This may add a few points for them. I will keep Iowa and OKST in these polls unless it becomes obvious that another contender for 3rd place should replace them. Right now, MICH and NCST are ahead of OKST and IOWA but the margin is thin and it is close enough that 3rd thru 6th could change weekly (maybe even thru 8th). So, until further notice I'll keep the storied programs of IOWA and OKST in the bdhof Top Four Rankings along with PSU and tOSU.

The Midlands was all about Iowa and the Scuffle was all about PSU. Iowa crowned five champs at Midlands, and really didn't have any bad performances. PSU's 285 Nevills, seeded 1 and ranked #3, lost twice at the Scuffle, and placed 4th, and PSU's 133 Keener, seeded 4 and unranked, failed to place. Additional bad news for PSU came when 141 Cortez and backup 197 McCutcheon were injured. Cortez's injury may pave the way for Lee to pull his redshirt. In PSU's stacked 197 depth chart, starter Cassar, seeded 1 and ranked #9, was upset and placed 3rd. #2 on the depth chart at 197, McCutcheon, a former 2x NCAA Q and preseason #4 rank, was injured and MFF'ed out of the tourny. And #3 on the depth chart at 197, Rasheed, won it all. Another PSU backup, Lee, placed 2nd at 141.

And since our last rankings, tOSU pounded Maryland and beat Rutgers handily, although with a couple of upset losses to Rutgers by Hayes and Campbell. But the big news since December is that NaTo took to the mat, registering a TF in the 1st period vs Maryland before skipping the Rutgers match and #2 Suriano. It will be nice to see him compete with some top talent, and he'll do that this weekend vs #5 Lizak, and then take on freshman star, Spencer Lee, Iowa, the following week. Having just pulled the redshirt, Spencer Lee starts the season ranked #11, but will likely climb up in the rankings.

tOSU increased their lead over PSU to 21.5 without bonus points (BP), the eight straight ranking that tOSU has gained on PSU. With BP, tOSU has a 10.5 point edge over PSU. All five venues that do team rankings have tOSU #1! Only IM and TOM use BP in their team rankings. Flo, while giving tOSU a lead, continues to write a disclaimer on their team rankings, saying that no one actually believes that tOSU is the favorite.

From Flo:
"This doesn't mean that Ohio State is the favorite. Nor is anyone at Flo picking Ohio State to win the national championship — although maybe some are, that's just a totally different topic. This is merely a snapshot of the current rankings of all 10 weights. Don't read too much into it!"

I wonder how long they'll keep posting this disclaimer.

My rankings compile the average rankings of six venues - Amateur Wrestling News (AWN), Flowrestling (Flo), Intermat (IM), The Open Mat (TOM), Trackwrestling (TW), and Wrestler Insider Magazine (WIN). When one or more of these venues do not submit a ranking, then the compilation will be of those venues that did. This week all six submitted rankings.

Here's where we stand after two months of wrestling (plus or minus from last week):
1 tOSU 132.0 (plus 5.5)
2 PSU 110.5 (minus 5.5)
3 IOWA 61.5 (not previuosly ranked)
4 OKST 55.5 (minus 14.5)

My secret sauce on bonus pts currently gives PSU +32, tOSO +21, IOWA +3 and OKST +2.5. So, that looks like this:
1 tOSU 132.0 + 21 = 153.0
2 PSU 110.5 + 32 = 142.5
3 IOWA 61.5 + 2.5 = 64.0
4 OKST 55.5 + 3 = 58.5

12/22/17-1/11/18 summary
tOSU
Pletcher at #2 moved up in the polls as guys ahead of him lost. Pletcher at #2 is amazing. A strong 2nd half by him, Hayes and Campbell will go a long way towards getting tOSU past PSU in March. Campbell lost his top 8 ranking, now at #13, and Hayes dropped a notch.
PSU
Scuffle results dropped Nevills and Cassar in the rankings. Lee likely will make his debut soon as a starter, and will garner an initial 8-12 rank. Rasheed may win the spot at 197 and be ranked similar to Cassar.
MICH
Off
OKST
Wrestled Wyoming and then NCST in Italy and Dean Heil lost two matches in a row.

This Week's Key Matches
tOSU wrestles MINN, with several matches of interst, including NaTo vs #5 Lizak. PSU wrestles MICH, with good matches from 157 thru 285. And in the marquee match of the week, OKST and Iowa battle it out.

It's amazing how much tOSU has gained on, and surpassed PSU. The preseason rankings had this w/o bonus points:

PSU 123.5
tOSU 108

A 15.5 point deficit has turned into a 21.5 point lead, a 37 point swing.

With Bonus Points it was this:

PSU 157
tOSU 128

A 29 point deficit has turned into a 10.5 point lead, a 39.5 point swing.

That being said, I think this is still a tossup and will come down to who performs the best in Cleveland.

And in case you're wondering, tOSU's gains this week were a little bit Pletcher but mostly NaTo. He had been unranked in two polls due to inactivity. Those two polls now have him at #1 and #4. The other four polls all have him #1. Some of the gains were lost due to Campbell and to a lesser extent Hayes dropping.

Your secret sauce formula needs adjusted if only calculating 3 (or 2.5) bonus points for Iowa. They will exceed that in the first round and you will hear their fans in Cleveland going nuts with every pin.

Iowa 157# scores more than 3 bonus points at NCAAs.

Yeah, it's a mathematical formula that is not going to capture all the points, but will show a discrepancy between some teams that are likely to score a lot of bonus points, like tOSU and PSU, and other teams that will not score nearly as many, like Iowa and OKST. Iowa returns 8.5 BP from last year, OKST returns 9, tOSU returns 23 and PSU 31.

The discrepancy on returning team points is this
Iowa 0
OKST +0.5
tOSU +14.5
PSU +22.5

The discrepancy in my secret sauce is this
OKST 0
IOWA +0.5
tOSU +18.5
PSU +29.5

So the discrepancy in returning points and my secret sauce is pretty close. Now, neither will be accurate, but I believe that PSU will out bonus tOSU by 10 give or take a few points, and that tOSU will out bonus Iowa and OKST by about 15-20.

Here's how my secret sauce works. I won't be too detailed because then I would have to kill everyone who reads this. If you have the best NCAA wrestler P4P on your team, and he doesn't have any competition in the NCAA tournament, then he will pin everybody and score 10 bonus points. However, if he has a really good opponent in the finals, he only gets 4 pins. The only wrestlers who score bonus points in my system are Flo Top 20 P4P. This changes as the year goes on, so bonus points change. If a wrestler isn't on the P4P Top 20, he won't score BP in my formula. A high ranked P4P wrestler scores more than a lower ranked P4P. And if you're on the P4P you are considered a really good opponent. So Captain America, the #1 ranked P4P pins everyone until the finals when he meets Coon, another P4P wrestler. Now I know that Snyder isn't historically a pinner (although he's 4 for 4 this year), but that's the way my system works. Iowa and OKST each have only 1 P4P'er so they don't get as many points as tOSU and PSU with 5 each.

Yeah he’s doing pretty well so far. Should hit a few other ranked guys leading up to EIWA’s and get a shot to avenge his only loss to Mattiace from Penn in an upcoming dual on 2/10.

Darmstadt is currently 18-1 with 11 pins, 2 TF, 3 MD, 2 Dec. Intermat ranked wins are against #7 Miklus (9-0 MD, Miklus was ranked #2 at that time) & #10 Rasheed (8-4 Dec, Rasheed recently dominated his opponents while winning Southern Scuffle)
