A View from a Hill (UK-2005)

Horror: An archaeologist discovers a strange site on Gallows Hill through a pair of old binoculars. Atmospheric horror that really delivers!!!!! 6.5/8

Touch of Madness (US-1972)

Horror: Janet inherits a house from her crazy mother who died in an asylum. The house is run down on the outside and is about to be condemned but once she goes inside the house it is immaculate. She meets her elderly cousins who still live in the house who are a bit odd and soon discovers that the house does not hide the past. Is she not right? Is she insane? Will she now run for her... oooppppsss sorry, got a little disturbed in me right there.... 5.5/8

Whistle and I'll Come to You (UK-2010)

Horror: No deja-vu here, this is the 2010 version of the movie I saw a few weeks ago. While this film shares the basis of the earlier one it is very different. An astronomer gets a room at an out of season hotel after dropping of his ailing wife at a care center. He stumbles upon a ring buried in the sand and then the fun begins. "Who is it who comes to me?" Atmospheric Horror that had me on edge from the beginning... 6.0/8

The Big Short: 6/8

The strength of the movie is in the performances. The content is understandably tough to follow. They know this as they use cameos inventively to help explain the math/technicalities of what was actually going on. In some cases it works, maybe another one or two would have helped more.

13 Hours- 6/8

Thought it was really good. One problem I had was that all of military members looked the same and was hard to tell them apart. When some of them died at the end, I had to go back and see which one they were. Seemed like one of the more realistic war movies and it wasn't "Hollywooded" up too much.

All the Way- 6.5/8- an HBO movie about Lyndon Johnson from Kennedy's assassination to his 1964 election. Bryan Cranston plays LBJ. Very well done. One of the better movies I've seen recently.

"La La Land" - 4/8

I guess it's well-done - certainly quirky - but I didn't care for it. I don't like movies where the guy doesn't get the girl in the end, even though it's obvious they were made for each other and the theme is fulfilling your dreams. Kinda reminded me of Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner in "The Bodyguard". Come to think of it, "I Will Always Love You" probably should have been in the LLL soundtrack.

The People Across the Lake (1988)

Horror: The Yoman family is sick of the city grind and when a lake house becomes available in a small town they bite. They start to suspect that this small quiet town is not as safe as it seems when bodies start popping up on their property. It had its faults but not too bad overall... 5.0/8

Passengers

Science Fiction Nuts = 7/8

Normal Movie Goers = 4/8

I liked this movie a lot but that's probably because I read a lot of science fiction and this movie is built to appeal to SciFy nerds! What I find curious is that it's not built to appeal to much else. If you thought Rogue One dragged on at times you definitely DON'T want to spend your hard earned money to see this movie.

But if you're a hard core science fiction fan you will love this movie. The attention to detail and spectacular extrapolation of technology in the future is reminiscent of the best science fiction literature. The depiction of an interstellar journey is spot on and you will find it all very interesting much like an Omni Max Museum film about space. Of course you may get stuck with the dinner tab afterwards as the other folks who came along on your recommendation won't be quite so enthused about your movie choices.

interesting. Everyone I know who has seen it has said its far more a romance movie than a sci fi movie.

Naked and the Brave (1958) - Interesting study in command styles and their effect on the troops. A bit stiff and preachy at times.

5/8

It definitely had a strong romance based plot in the vain hopes of entertaining the ladies. That's why I didn't give it an "8" as the romance subplot is pretty lame with the exception of an interesting exploration of moral principals in which the lead character takes a certain action to kick off the romance.

My guess is the folks you've talked to think of "sci fi" movies in the light of aliens & action. When they hear "sci fi" they're expecting "Alien", "Star Wars" or "Star Trek". This movie is more along the lines of "Moon" or "Silent Running". It also pays meticulous attention to space travel details along the lines of "2001 A Space Odyssey".

The "romance" plot just provides the narrative to show you the next gadget in space. Without it the movie really would be a like a National Geographic film about our first interstellar voyage.

El monte de las brujas (Spain-1975)

Horror: aka "The Witches Mountain" ... A photographer meets a beautiful free lance writer who agrees to go up the mountain with him to get photographs. Well, like the title suggests this mountain is home to a coven of witches. This movie was extremely choppy with scenes just suddenly ending. I would guess that the original did not survive and this is what is left. Shot in the very eerie Pyrenees made the view worth while... 3.0/8

Bullitt (1968) - I was very disapointed by this film. Roger Ebert considered it a "great film" and I do like much of what he liked about the film, including Steve McQueen's performance and the famous chase scene (you can't beat a 67 Mustang chasing a 68 Dodge Charger over the San Fransico hills), however, I felt the film did a poor job tying up all of the loose ends to the plot.

car chase 7/8

over all film 4.5/8

Satan's School for Girls (1973)

Horror: The lovely Kate Jackson is in this one, WOW... also, Cheryl Ladd... thats right, two of the soon to be Angels appear in this one. Elizabeth goes under cover at an all girls school to investigate why her sister committed suicide which she thinks was suspicious. This was remade in 2000 with a different story but the original is better and did I mention Kate Jackson!!!!! ... 5.0/8

Bloody Wednesday (1987)

Horror: Harry discovers one day that things just no longer fit. After losing his job he is forced to live in abandoned hotel. Alone, who loses touch with reality and spirals slowly into madness. The last 10 minutes is intense but this movie would be much better if they would of cut out the first 5 minutes... 4.5/8

The Alpha Incident (1978)

SciFi/Horror: A biochemist and 4 railroad workers become contaminated by a martian micro-organism that attacks when one is asleep. How long could you stay awake for? For some reason I liked this movie though many would find it extremely boring. Interesting concept.... 4.0/8

The Vampire Conspiracy (Canada-2005)

Horror: Well, it was time to throw in one of those really low budget films with little to no acting ability in hope that a decent story comes out of it. Well, 5 strangers awake to notice that they are in a room with no doors. We soon learn that a vampire has put them their for his entertainment as he is disappointed in how humanity had turned out. The dialogue in this movie made it unwatchable but I suffered through the absurdity just to see if I myself could endure it. I've seen the worse of the worse and survived and some how I made it to the end.... 1.0/8
