While Kennedy's is not a true soul food restaurant I have been searching for a great soul spot food in NYC and have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. The Harlem restaurants like Sylvia's are more about tourists and the "local" places I have been to are nothing great. In all my travels I still think North Carolina has the best soul food in the country.

Buddy's Pizza in Rochester Hills, MI. A suburban out post of the original Detroit style square pizza place, (Jets is the chain outside of Detroit for those that have it in their city).

Food 6.5/8> I actually like this style pizza as the cheese goes right up to the edge and they brown it in a deep pan so it crisps up and I love that flavor. Not as greasy as Jets and better toppings. They have a 4 cut all square pieces size that is the bomb. Salad was good too.

Service> 7/8> Server was a vet and knew how to work a table that was ordering pizza. We got the right amount for the table and was directed to a great local IPA that was mighty tasty with the pizza.

Space> 5/8> Clean but a little suburban for my taste. Only saving grace were the cool vintage pictures of Detroit, especially the one of Mark Fidrych hanging just above our booth.

River City Cafe (Surfside, SC)

3.5/8 The food was good and the service was fairly bad. Felt sorry for the waitress because she did everything she could but the rest of the restaurant was poorly managed. The kitchen was running way behind but there were plenty o opportunities for the rest of the staff to sit around and gossip with a full house.

You in North Topsail ? If you have kids with you and you goof around near the New River Inlet for a while, you may get to see some Marines practice beach landings across the inlet. On a clear night you can see the Cherry Point guys playing Maverick and Jester, although it will just like a couple tiny stars chasing each other.

You could head over to the other side of the Sound if Auggie gives you a good recommendation -

Jets is the same as Buddy's? I've been meaning to get there. Slowly day tripping different places up there. Usually trying things I've no experience to judge, like Two James Distillery. Pricey. Neat atmosphere but I've no idea what it was I was drinking or how well it fares. It's all fire water to me.

Figure I'll try and pick a favorite chili dog too, get to Slow's BBQ but definitely want to get to Buddy's.

Had Hamman's out in Fairfield yesterday, macaroni salad and pulled pork bbq. 5/8 It's a butcher shop so atmosphere isn't really anything, it's carry out. Food was okay but Eli's and Pontiac are much better.

Supposed to be baseball. Instead, Mother Nature is winning with rain drenching the fields.

Well, if you are Friday-Friday, it looks like you have M-T-W clear. The sandy fields dry up quickly. Youth event, or one of the HS tourneys like Mingo Bay ?

Scott's Brats 6/8 On Palm Beach behind the Playa Linda

Good breakfast sandwiches for 5 bucks and the Italian beef is great. Outdoor shack with a view. Unfortunately Scott sold the place and it's not quite the same. Usually gave it an 8/8 for food and service previous years.

Excellent prices? I mean it's not bad but it's far from excellent. $4 for a side of fries is insane, despite how good it is (and it is very, very good).

Guild House, Short North 7.8/8

High-end place. Steep prices with small portions but food and service was excellent. Had the scallops with a side of brussell sprouts. Long Trail Limbo IPA.

Eh…considering how nice the portions are, plus the taste/quality of food…still excellent in my book. And you have to top the meal off with a donut from Holtman's for dessert.

Nada
Arena District Columbus

Sat outside, ate some tacos and drank a couple margaritas. Food was great, service was very good, and the weather was perfect today. Perhaps slightly expensive but not too bad for the area. 7/8

Ripken Experience. Games were supposed to be Sat/Sun/Mon. All games were played last night except our varsity and JV...not sure why they cancelled just those games last night. Three other fields got their games in. We had two JV games today that were played in constant drizzle. The varsity played on game and the second game the other team was a no show because they had dinner reservations. JV and Varsity each have one scheduled game tomorrow. Varsity is picking up a makeup game, not sure about JV.

Basically has been an unfulfilling trip with the bad weather.

Hamburger Joe's (Surfside Beach, SC)

4.5/8

Second time going to Hamburger Joe's. First time was in North Myrtle Beach. Second time was in Surfside Beach (25 minutes south of the first one). The food just wasn't as good even though they were the same chain. The one in North Myrtle Beach had a long wait and tons of people there, walked right in at the Surfside Beach location. Not sure why but the Surfside Beach location just isn't as good.

Stuff like this drives me nuts. Were they gonna starve ? There's a Subway on every other street corner. The kids from the other team had to be overjoyed with their parents.

I hope it goes well for you guys Monday. Safe travels home.

I usually grab a couple drinks when I'm down there so with the sandwich and fries I don't have enough room for a Holtman's donut. But in the rare event I can, it's a great combo.
