Buffon's best attribute is organizing the defense, dude is always screaming at the back line and keeping everyone well positioned. Neuer on the other hand is very athletic and is revolutionizing the position with his aggressive tactics.

Also, these two are the visual stereotypes of each nation.

You can never tell if Neuer just won a trophy or is burning books. Very stoic.

Amazing thing about Buffon is that he's 40 and still makes some amazing saves.

Neither of them are the greatest GK ever. That award goes to Regerio Ceni, who scored 131 goals over a 26 year career.

Does that make him a great keeper?

I'd say it makes him a great free kick and penalty taker.

Belgium plays so poorly for a team full of stars.

Winner of France/Germany cruises to the title. Portugal hasn't been that impressive this tournament. Wales probably has a decent shot at making the finals.

Will be watching the game with my Italian cousin in-law tomorrow in Minneapolis. Going to be real pissed if I show up and have to drink Peroni all day.

Pretty funny that England's little brother Wales advances farther than they do after they lose to Iceland. Wales only has about 3-4 decent players after Bale.

Peroni isn't bad for beer. One of the few I can drink without regretting it

I agree that Portugal has not looked impressive but they still haven't loss. I don't think either of those teams would cruise (I still think they would win but it won't be easy) to a win over Portugal.

Portugal have stumbled and bumbled their way into the semis. I wouldn't be shocked if Wales thrashes them.

Italy have really only had one solid chance to score. Germany look like they're close to scoring another.

PK's decide it for Germany.

Hoping for the Vikings to shock France, but I don't see it happening. I read that 10% of Iceland's entire population is now in France ... enough to fill about about half the Stade de France.

Was hoping Neuer would get the chance to win it. What a game and what a stand by Italy to hold on for that long.

Same. Especially with how in soccer the goalie has to basically dive one way or another and it's almost a 50-50 guess.

I say, just start playing sudden death after the 30 minutes of extra time. Every 5 minutes, take a player from each team off the field (no stoppage, they just have to run off the sideline before the 5 minute mark). Keep going until it's 1v1 and someone scores. Would take another 45 minutes more than the 30 minutes of current non-sudden death overtime, but someone is bound to score 1v1 at absolute worst.

Since the biggest argument for PKs is games going on forever, if we make it like this, the game should end shortly after 75 minutes of overtime. And only a handful of players will really play for a while (probably edging towards players subbed in late in the game or extra time). And to shorten it further, just eliminate the current 30 minute silver or golden goal period, and just start taking players off at the start of overtime (start 10v10).

Also, if a team is one-man down (or more), it just makes getting a red card that much more dangerous as you'll always been one man down in sudden death.

They're just nerve-racking.

120 minutes is already really tough, a system that can go 160 or more wouldn't be safe even with small numbers per side. Maybe making ET 8v8 would result in more goals and fewer matches going to PKs but PKs have to exist.

Soccer is a game of endurance.... let them keep playing but with a sudden death overtime after the 30 minute extra time... Just allow 3 more substitutions during that period.

If not, I would change the way they do PK's by allowing the goalie to move once the whistle blows...

Golden goal leads to overly-defensive tactics. It sucks.

Would you be happy if tied NFL games were determined by 25-yd Field Goal tries?

To say the players would be too tired is a disservice to the players. So they slow down some. Not run as fast, etc. If you keep removing one after another, eventually you'll get to the players that have been subbed the latest (as you'd probably won't the shortest participation playing to the end).

There are other ways, and none require playing 11v11 for eternity. Taking players away one by one opens up the field, and gives credence to attacking soccer, rather than the bunker ball you see in traditional golden goal periods.

And if by some miracle you make it to 2v2 or even 1v1, it's not going to last long before someone just makes a long attempt at the unprotected net once the goalies are removed from the equation.

PKs aren't bad because they're not exciting. They're bad because A) they're not like the regular flow of play decided the entire game and B) they're almost entirely random with little 'talent'. It's almost entirely luck. Goalies may be able to 'see' which way the kick may go, but it's not hard for the that to be faked. Which makes the goalie dive almost a 50-50 bet and getting on net is about (based on just GER-ITA, I think 3 of the 16 kicks went outside the goal) meaning 81% of the time is a 50% chance to stop the shot. 19% of the time, the kicker just completely misses the goal.

That's not quality. That's garbage. The PK is basically a punishment for a flagrant penalty in the box that almost assuredly results in a goal for the offended team. Hence the nature of the PK. Having THAT decide who wins and loses is a problem that soccer, as an entire entity, has simply chosen not to rectify.

NFL games have, an average, only 11 minutes of actual game play. They play 60 minute games that take nearly 4 hours. They have unlimited substitutions. Of course they can afford to go into multiple overtimes. That's a really bad case of apples and oranges comparison.

Some years ago, Ohio high school tournament games used a similar system. I believe they stopped removing players at 5v5 though. One boys game (involving Dayton Carroll) lasted an insane amount of OT's and the system was revised. I don't remember all the details...maybe someone else can help.

EDIT: I found the answer on OHSAA's website. In 1977, a game between Centerville and Carroll went 25 overtimes and lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours. Crazy.
