Real Talk....Youngstown State University

Substantial academic money for my son.....Interested in Civil Engineering...Any East Ohio population/alumni/students care to give some advice? Will visit soon..

Wright State, Cleveland State and Akron are also good possibilities. Because of the academic money!

My son was signe to wrestle for Cleveland State but switched to Air Force. The campus is kind of cool if you like a downtown setting. Much safer since the sky walk was completed or so they said. Very clean though. A good variety of programs. I don't know if you've visited yet, just sharing info.

Go for the degree, not the money. It's all in-state money and at an Engineer's salary, debt is an over valued decision maker. Even out-of-state, if the quality of the school chosen is such it will bring in more professional prospects.

Two of the best engineering schools in the state are Cincinnati and Wright State.

Your child will do just fine with an engineering degree from YSU.

Plenty of folks out there that have done very, very well

But your child will do much better with an engineering degree from any other university in the state, specifically UC

Congrats to you and your son. To be looking at these choices is an indicator that he's done very well.

Someone gave us very valuable advice when my son was in this spot- go to the top school you can get into. It pays off down the line. Don't forget the private schools. Some of them have ridiculous scholarship and aid money.

poly absolutely and look how Akron's Civil is rated here:
http://best-engineering-colleges.com...gineering/ohio

The regionals with Engineering have strong programs but narrower in focus than Case, OSU and Cinci. Even within a focus such as Civil, it's worth being sure which programs offer what your son might eventually want to do with that degree.

Can't stress enough: go for the degree, not the money. An Engineer's salary will eat debt like a pac-man but it's the first time salary that compounds, so you want to start high. That means getting into the best school he can for his desired focus and even changing schools if he finds another more suitable.

UC's 5 yr engineering coop programs are extremely underrated. I know many people who have graduated from the engineering school with $20-30k in the bank due to cooping every other semester and a fairly high paying first job.

Co-op is also a great way to experience living on your own a bit (usually house share with other co-ops), get a feel for different types of the profession and see other parts of the country.

Mine was between Baltimore and DC, a pretty exciting place for young people. My cousin's kid had a co-op stint in Germany (out of Kettering U). Civil Engs, I imagine, could go just about anywhere in the world or local.

For many years, UC has been known as the top in-state option for engineering. Akron and Cleveland State are good too

Yup. Two of my good friends did just that and then stayed with the companies they interned with straight out of college and had roughly that in the bank. No need for a part time job is you co-op in the engineering school. Gets your foot in the door and a leg up on the competition.

My oldest son has a Mechanical Engineering degree from UC. Co Op was awesome for him. This is back in 2014 when he graduated...was making $22 per hour in his last co op that lasted from Jan - end of Aug in a local power firm. (Had done 2 previously with Duke) Had 1 semester of school left after he was done...was offered a Jr. Engineer position on the spot at his exit interview. Had almost $20k in the bank and a new car lol heading into last year at UC. Applied for 2 positions locally after graduation...offers from both firms and he got to choose. 3 years later he is director of 3D division in a local software firm and loving it. UC was a great place for him to be challenged in the classroom and gain professional development that made him an impact employee from the jump. Can't speak to other places, but our sons academic experience at UC was well worth it.

I'm sure YSU's engineering program is fine, but I wouldn't consider it a top program. It's certainly lagging in respect to Case, OSU, UC, and UD.

From UC's website...

Today, UC's co-op program is listed among the nation's best in "US News & World Report" rankings.
Probably pretty appropriately rated.

I meant the engineering program as a whole is underrated. The coop program requirement gives UC engineering grads a significant leg up.

Wtf do you have to contribute here? Your kid got a 17 on his ACT and is lucky to work at Kroger bagging groceries. How about quoting the entire thing punk? He also asked about Cleveland State. The further you reach, the dumber and more desperate you prove to be.

The mandatory coop was one of the things I liked about Wabash college too. Seems like more schools would encourage that.

Thanks for the input guys....His first choice is Dayton. His counselor told us that UC and Toledo give a lot of money also. He gets Case material at least twice a week. We visit CSU this month and Case next month.

He won't get much aid from Case because of our family income. But I certainly can't/won't pay for that education. Matter of fact, I won't pay for any of it! He will get all Merit Scholarships.....
