Favorite Beaches!
In deep February, it's nice to wax nostalgic about the beach. But a beach experience is as much a state of mind as white sand, blue water and tropical breezes. So tell us about your favorite beach.
Here's one I've never been to but it looks awesome and it's in Siberia!

Bahia Honda Beach in Key West has to be my favorite. Of course Miami Beach is nice, but Bahia just is a special place for me. Reminds me of the water in GITMO for snorkeling. A sea kayak and a couple days and there's so much to see. Camp 150ft from the dune. Downtown Key West is only about 30minutes away. Just a nice place.
PS. I'm planning a trip to the Dry Tortugas this year. It may take one as my fave.

Two of my favorite beaches:
Surfside City Beach in South Carolina: About 15 miles south of Myrtle Beach so you avoid the crowds but nice houses right on the water, an excellent sand beach, big waves, two great state parks a couple of miles away with one north & one south of Surfside City. And just enough miniature gulf/go carts/video games to keep the teenagers occupied. And to top it off, Alligator adventure is only 20 miles away!
Kalaloch beach in the Olympic National Park: This is an amazing place with a half mile wide sand beach at low tide. Unfortunately the water is to cold to swim in and you are at risk of getting crushed by floating logs but the scenery at the beach is beyond awesome! Sunsets are amazing but the real greatness of this beach is that they let you build fires - BIG FIRES - on the beach. And you don't have to work hard to get fire wood. It's all been crushed up against the cliffs at the back of the beach (trees from the rain forest fall into the rivers are washed down to the ocean and then get pushed way up on the beach during monster winter storms). The logs burn like paper. Oh and you can drink beer on the beach!

As a young child my parents took us every year to East Harbour State Park on Lake Erie Had the most beautiful sand beach in Ohio. Was wonderful place to go as a child. Last time I went I was told a storm took the sand beach away and the park had become really rundown and in disrepair. This was many years ago so I do not know the state of the park today.

Looks amazing, Bluth. For me, the two best I've been to by far are Cinnamon Bay, St. John USVI and Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. Breathtaking is the best way to describe it. No "noise" or commercial properties/businesses getting in the way.

Great call on Bahia Honda! had one of the best days of my life down there on vacation. Kids were little and we snorkeled and shelled for hours and saw maybe five people the whole day. We then drove into Key West and had dinner at Blue Heaven, watched the street performers and the sunset. A perfect, beautiful day.

Nags Head, NC. Used to be Hilton Head, but Nags Head has a slower pace that I like and beachfront homes have more privacy on the beach than the plantation/condo set-ups that dominate (or used to) Hilton Head. Going back this year.

+3 on Bahia Honda, all those hidden little coves make it feel like a private beach.
Personnel favorite though is Elbow Beech in Bermuda, pink sand with crystal blue water is unbeatable.

I have never seen a beach area go down hill at a state parkas fast as Caesar's Creek has. I do not know what caused it lack of money or what.

I don't really "get" beaches, though that one in Positano might change my view. Can't think of anything I'd do, or not do there that I wouldn't rather do or not do elsewhere. I think you're right about beaches being a "state of mind."
Living a block from, we'd go for v-ball match or to practice. When northern visitors came, it was obligatory to go chase crabs as if that's what we did every evening. They're ok for diving, if the coral's close or launching a hobbie. I think the invention of affordable AC might have ruined them for me.

Sounds like Bermuda is a favorite of many. One day...
Outer Banks, NC (Nags Head.....) - wife and I traveled the length off the OB just for the experience, driving part of the way through a tropical storm. Otherwise, incredibly nice.
Emerald Isle, NC - family used to rent a two-story stilt house on the other side of the beach road. Family congregated in the first-floor kitchen, largely leaving me with the upstairs to myself (tv and re ading). Sweet.
Miramar Beach, FL - nice for swimming, sunning and shopping.
Special mention: Daytona Beach - this Ohio boy got his first real sunburn on an overcast day. Lesson learned fairly early in life.
