Tennessee High Vikings

Wayne will be playing the host school Tennessee High Vikings in the Arby's classic on Tuesday. This will be the 4th game of the day and will start approximately at 5:30. Tennessee High will be coming in with a 6-5 record. They were 21-10 last season. They will be led by their go to player lefty Michael Mays who will shoot the ball from all over and create shots. He has already scored 33 and 28 points in games this season and averages well over 20 points a game. The Vikings do not have much size but they are scrappy and find ways to get to the charity stripe. They will mix it up on defense playing man, 2-2-1, Diamond, and 3 qtr trap. Wayne is the reigning Arby's Classic Champion and looks to repeat. Best of luck to the Warriors down in Tennessee!!!!

Game 5

Huber Heights Wayne traveled to Tennessee to take on the host school Tennessee High Vikings at the Arbys Classic.

James got the scoring started for Wayne scoring a layup off of a steal. Parker later hit a three and a slam by Smith put Wayne up 9-2 early. Tennessee High got it going to close to 11-9 but another James layup and a pair of free throws by Palma extended the lead to 16-11 after 1.

Just like the way the game started it was James with a layup to get the Wayne scoring started in the 2nd. Kennedy came off the bench and drilled a 3 for the Warriors that put Wayne up 21-12. Wayne went up by 10 when James did a three the ole fashion way. The Wayne pressure picked up causing turnovers leading to a Fointno layup, Trice put back and a McKee layup and Wayne was in control taking a 30-14 lead in the 2nd. Mays though got on fire for the Vikings drilling 3 straight three's but Wayne answered with a Trice 3 and a McKee 3. With Wayne up 40-23 Mitchell drained a 3 at the buzzer for the Vikings to make it 40-26 at the break.

Wayne opened up a 20 point lead as Trice got hot scoring 6 quick points in the qtr and then they opened it up as James drills a 3 and a Parker steal and layup put the Warriors up 60-32. Wayne cruised from there winning 83-46.

HH Wayne ____ 16 24 21 22 - 83
Tennessee High 11 15 08 12 - 46

Wayne scoring: James 22, Smith 12, Trice 11, Palma 11, McKee 8, Parker 8, Kennedy 6, Fointno 4, Hampton 1. Tennessee high was led by Mays who put in 18.

This was a great game for James who was only averaging 6 points a game on the season. Wayne will take on 10-0 Buford GA on Thursday at 5 PM....

Game 6

2nd round of the Arby's classic featuring one of the top teams from Georgia and #52 in the nation Buford GA.

Game started out back and forth early. L. Smith made himself known quickly scoring 4 of Wayne's first 5 baskets. A Parker layup off of a Trice steal put Wayne up 7-4. Buford though battled back taking an 8-7 lead as 6'6" Watson made back to back baskets. Wayne answered with a 6-0 run to go up 13-8 and after a McKee 3 it was looking good as the Warriors took a 18-10 lead. Back to back baskets by Smith put Wayne up 22-13 but a basket by Viti made it 22-15 after 1.

Buford wised up and realize they could not run with Wayne so they sat back in a 2-3 zone. Wayne was able to score first on a Smith basket to go up 24-15 but they struggled with the zone not being able to hit from the outside. As the pace slowed Wayne's lead started to dissolve. A Watson 3 followed by a Jones basket put the Wolves within 4. Wayne was able to get it back up to 28-22 but a basket by Buford late cut it to 28-24 at the half.

Viti for Buford went off in the 3rd stating it off with a 3 to cut the lead to 1. Smith answered with an ole fashion 3 and then a basket by James got the lead to 6 and it started looking good again. Buford went back to the zone and once again Wayne struggled not being able to hit the outside shot. A Viti basket got the game tied at 3 and following a Smith basket Viti came back and drilled a 3 to give Buford the lead. Buford led 41-39 after 3

4th quarter was miss opportunities for Wayne. Missed free throws and too many turnovers was too much to overcome as Buford maintained the lead. Buford opened up a 49-43 lead. Trice drilled a 3 to cut it to 49-46 but Buford answered with a shot. Buford opened it up to 7 following back to back turnovers but a Fointno 3 got Wayne within 4. Watson came back with a monster dunk to make it 55-49 but was tee'd up. Wayne had a chance but they missed both free throws but was able to get the basket on their possession cutting it to 55-51. Wayne got the stop and had a chance but a steal led to a Viti basket putting Buford up 57-51. Another steal by Jones which led to 2 free throws put them up by 8. Parker drilled a 3 but it was too late as Buford pulled off the win 61-54.

HH Wayne _ 22 06 11 15 - 54
Buford GA _ 15 09 17 20 - 61

Scoring for Wayne: Smith 19, Parker 13, James 9, Trice 5, Fointno 5, McKee 3. Buford was led by Watson with 20, Viti 19 (16 in 2nd half) Jones 11, Nixon 8, and Miles 3.

Wayne missed 9 free throws in this game and was only 4 of 19 from beyond the arc. Wayne will play Friday at 12 noon in the 5th place bracket....

Oak Ridge Wildcats, Tennessee (12-1)

Wayne will be playing Oak Ridge Tennessee Friday at 12 noon. Oak Ridge is 12-1 and ranked #3 in the state of Tennessee. They went 34-3 last season.

Key players:
6'5" Tyshawn Young scored 29 points in their first round game
6'1" Anthony Gibson
6'4" Tajion Jones

Should be another tough one for Wayne. Both teams lost today as Oak Ridge lost a close game to Kentucky power Louisville Trinity and are now in the 5th place bracket. Loser of this game is done while the winner moves on to play in the 5th place game....

Go Wayne!

Game 7

5th place bracket of the Arby's classic as the 12-1 Oak Ridge TN Wildcats take on Wayne. Wayne gets off to a quick start with back to back Trice steals leading to a Trice and James basket, 4-0 Wayne. Oak Ridge fires back scoring the next 6 and opens up an 11-6 lead after a Jones 3. Game got sloppy and it wasn't looking good for the Warriors as Oak Ridge extended the lead to 14-7 following another 3 by Jones. Wayne cut it to 14-10 with a Parker score and 1 and looked to close within 2 with a Smith steal and basket but a charge was called on Smith giving him 2 and to the bench he goes until the 3rd qtr. Fointno scores on a nice move and after 1 it is Oak Ridge 16 Wayne 12.

Wayne scores the first 5 points to start the 2nd. McKee with a basket and 1 and Parker followed with a pair of free throws and Wayne was back up 17-16. The game went back and forth and with Palma also getting into foul trouble that opened it up for Oak Ridge's big as he scored 6 in the qtr. Wayne battled though making 6 of 7 free throws in the qtr and a big basket by Palma who had to come back in with 3 fouls kept Wayne close as they only trailed 25-22 at the half.

Gibson scored for Oak Ridge to get the 3rd started and following a Jones layup they were up 29-22 but with Smith back in the game he started to dominate. Smith scores 6 quick points and after a Fointno steal and layup put Wayne back up Smith scores again plus 1 as Wayne went on an 11-0 run to take a 33-29. Smith though would soon pick up another foul and back to the bench he went. Oak Ridge battled back to tie it at 33 but James breaks the tie with a 3. Oak Ridge would score the final 3 of the qtr and we are deadlocked at 36.

Parker opened up the 4th with a 3 and then a Smith steal and dunk put Wayne up 41-36. Jones would answer with a 3 to cut into Wayne's lead but the Warriors kept at it and another Parker steal who dishes to Trice with the score and Smith making a pair of free throws as Wayne took an 8 point lead. Oak Ridge made it interesting down the stretch when Gibson drilled a 3 to cut Wayne's lead to 47-44 but Wayne was able to make free throws (Parker, Smith, and Trice) down the stretch to come away with a 53-47 win.

HH Wayne _ 12 10 14 17 - 53
Oak Ridge TN16 09 11 11 - 47

Scoring: Wayne- Parker 16, Smith 13, James 7, Trice 6, Fointno 6, McKee 3, Palma 2 : Oak Ridge- Jones 22, Gibson 11, Young 8, M. Smith 3, L. Smith 1

Wayne struggled shooting the ball today but they forced numerous turnovers and that was the key to the victory. Despite Smith being in foul trouble the whole game they beat a very good team and made their last 8 free throws to put the game away. Wayne will play tomorrow (Saturday 31st) at 2:30.

GAME 8

Wayne took on the Christ School out of Arden NC today in the final game of the Arby's classic. Christ School came in with a 10-2 record and 3-1 in the classic.

Wayne got off to a quick start against the taller team (5 players at 6'8" or taller) out of North Carolina as Fointno drilled a 3 followed by layups by James and Smith as the Warriors were up 7-0. It did not take long for a highlight as Smith dunked over a 6'8" kid to put Wayne up 9-3. A Trice basket late made it 15-8 Wayne after 1. Smith had 6 for Wayne in the qtr and Halverson answered with 6 for Christ School NC.

Wayne scored the first 4 to take a double digit lead in the 2nd. A Smith steal and another dunk kept the double digit lead. The lead grew to 15 following baskets by Parker and Hampton but Christ School NC finished the qtr on a 6-2 run to make it 27-16 at the half.

The 3rd qtr started with a quick pace as both teams were scoring but Wayne extended the lead to 34-20 but Halverson drilled another 3. McKee answered with a basket but another 3 from Christ School NC got the lead down to 10 at 36-26. Wayne had an answer though and it was Smith scoring and one but shortly after he would pick up his 3rd foul and was on the bench. McKee hit a huge three down the stretch in the qtr as Wayne took a 42-27 lead but Christ School would score the final 4 to make it 42-31 after 3.

Wayne went up 44-31 as James hit Smith on a sweet pass but Smith picked up his 4th foul shortly after. McKee hits a big basket and Trice drills a pair of free throws as Wayne held the 13 point lead but Christ School NC still had a run in them as they were able to score the next 7 points and it was just 49-43 Wayne. With Smith back in the game Christ School NC was forced to foul. Parker hit a pair and then Trice sealed it with a steal and dunk to make it 53-43. A late 3 made the final 53-46.

Huber Heights Wayne 15 12 15 11 - 53
Christ School NC ___ 08 08 15 15 - 46

Scoring: Wayne- Smith 19, Trice 8, Parker 7, McKee 7, James 5, Fointno 5, Hampton 2- Christ School- Halverson 16, McKay 10, Cobb 5, Fleming 4, Rhode 4, Ajogbor 4, Ring 3

Wayne improves to 7-1 while Christ School drops to 10-3. Wayne will travel to Clayton to take on Northmont in a league game on Friday Jan 6. Northmont is currently 7-2 and in first place in the West.

Game 9

Wayne (7-1) @ Northmont (8-2)

Unfortunately my game notes did not survive the trip to Clayton but I was able to salvage my stats...

Wayne ___ 11 13 22 28 06 - 80
Northmont_ 18 16 24 16 07 - 81

Scoring: Wayne- Smith 28, Trice 15, Parker 14, James 11, Fointno 6, McKee 4, Hampton 2.. Northmont- Wilson 20, Richardson 18, Capers 12, Walker 10, Spears 8, Perkins 6, Wallace 5, Trammel 2.

=================================================

Northmont came out on fire. They out hustled, out boarded, and was hot from 3. They made some key 3's from bench players Perkins who drilled 2 and Wallace. The guard play of Richardson and Wilson got it done when needed. It was Northmont early taking a 18-11 lead after 1. 6 Bolt players scored in the qtr and they were led by Spears with 5. Smith had 4 for Wayne and McKee hit a 3 off of the bench.

Wayne was able to cut into the lead in the 2nd qtr getting it down to 27-22 at one point. Smith hit a 3 in the qtr and Fointno made a couple of baskets leading Wayne with 4 2nd qtr points. Northmont though always had an answer. Wilson scored 5 in the qtr including a 3, Perkins and Wallace came off the bench to drill three's and Capers scored 4 inside as the Bolts opened it up to a 34-24 lead at the break.

Northmont got up by as many as 17 points in the 3rd as they led 45-28. Wilson went off in the qtr scoring 11 and Richardson 7 as the two guards combined for 18 in the 3rd. Trice got it going for Wayne as the pace was fast and furious putting in 9 in the qtr. Smith added 6 as Wayne started to cut into the 17 point deficit and trailed by 12 after 3 58-46.

Northmont took a 62-48 lead early in the 4th but Wayne started to roll scoring the next 10 points helped by a James 3 to get to within 4 but time and time again Northmont would hit a key basket to keep the lead. Parker would hit a 3 to get it to within 3 and a Smith basket cut it to 1 late in the game. Wayne was forced to foul and with seconds left Parker drilled a 3 at the buzzer to tie the game at 74. Smith and James combined for 19 points in the 4th. Richardson scored 7 for the Bolts but it was Walker who scored 2 key baskets when it looked like Wayne was going to take the lead. Now, I will mention that the last 4 minutes of this game was a bit frustrating to watch as a Wayne fan and for those who were there know about the officiating down the stretch but the point is that Wayne should not put themselves in that situation where the numerous bad no-calls could impact the game.

Wayne scored the first basket in OT and almost scored 2nd later following a steal but the shot missed. The OT went back and forth with Northmont taking the lead with seconds left. Wayne had a shot to win it but the last second shot missed as 3 Northmont players tackled the Wayne player putting up the put back. In the end, this was a blowout that turned into a great game. Wayne showed great heart in the comeback and hopefully they can learn and improve from this experience. Northmont has a great team this year and should definitely win their side of the GWOC. Wayne drops to 2nd place with the loss and will face a tough Lima Senior Saturday....

Well, I would of said about a 4.5 favorite.... anyhow, I saw Northmont earlier in the year and I knew this was going to be a close game. The Bolts have the guards and the size inside. They handled the pressure, crashed the boards, and drilled the threes plus they always play tough at their home court.

If we shoot like we did last night against Findlay, this could get ugly fast.. We couldn't hit the floor last night.. This would have been a much better match up last year.. We only have one returning starter from that team. But roll it out and lets see what happens! Go Spartans!

Wayne only has 1 returning starter as well so this game will be interesting. I would of loved to see these teams go at it last season. Good luck on the rest of your season after today!!!!

Game 10

(I did not have a Lima Sr. roster tonight so if I apologize ahead of time if I get a name wrong.... )

Lima Senior the state D1 runner up from last season made the trip to Huber Heights tonight one of the toughest place for a visiting team to get a win as Wayne as only lost twice in the history of the gym. It did not take long for Wayne to get rolling in this one.

Wayne scored the first 4 points of the game and a Smith basket made it 6-2. Fointno connects to put Wayne up 8-2. Lima finally got it going as Ward scored a pair of baskets to cut it to 10-8 but later a James 3 opened it up to 15-8 and then a Parker basket and 1 made it 18-8 after 1.

Wayne completely dominated the 2nd qtr as Parker started it off with a 3. Fointno had a sweet layup and then a Smith dunk that put Wayne up 29-8. Wayne extended it to 41-13 following a Fointno 3 and then off of a steal Hampton with the layup 46-15 Wayne.

Lima played well in the 3rd qtr as they pressed aggressively which opened up the game and out scored Wayne 20-16. Ward and Taylor (??? #14) hit threes for the Spartans in the qtr. Trice had 6 for Wayne while Smith added 4. Both teams cleared the benches in the 4th as everyone got to play. Hampton, Palma, Shanklin, Kennedy, Scott, and Brown all scored for Wayne in the qtr. Final, Wayne 81 Lima Sr. 52

Lima SR 08 10 20 14 - 52
Wayne_ 18 28 16 19 - 81

Scoring for Wayne- Smith 20, Parker 12, Trice 10, Hampton 8, Fointno 7, James 7, Palma 6, McKee 4, Brown 3, Scott 2, Kennedy 1, Shanklin 1.. Lima SR- Ward 13, Shoots (??? #34) 9, Curtis 7, Taylor (??? #14) 7, King 5, Miller 4, Griffin 3, Williams 2, Coleman 2

Wayne improves to 8-2 and will travel to Meadowdale Tuesday night.

=========================================

JV action, Wayne JV won 71-43, also I failed to mention last night that the Wayne JV defeated Northmont JV last night in a great game between really good JV squads 55-46

I thought the regular season was 20 games. Is Wayne playing a 22-game schedule this year?
