Xavier Soccer

Since we just discussed OU soccer... How about XU?? Do we have anyone out there with some thoughts on the program and Woody's job.

5-26-1 since they went to Big East... 0-5 this year... Yikes! He had 2 years in his job before going to the Big East, thus giving him some time to get his kids into the program.

Job safe? Longer sample size then Aaron at OU

Maybe we should not have high expectation for the program? UC has turned the corner from Michelle.

Xavier University head women's soccer coach Woody Sherwood announced today that he's stepping down after seven seasons at the helm of alma mater.

Not a shocker...XU recorded a record of 12-48-4 in conference play during his tenure, including 6-19-2 in three seasons in the Atlantic 10 and 6-29-2 in four seasons in the BIG EAST. XU posted a 1-8 BIG EAST record this past season.

Sherman's record may not have been good, but his team's GPA was 3.6. That's pretty good. Ultimately, that's what's most important.

The program has been underwater for some time. Does this mean that the school really wants a winner? It's hard to say. I know that the facilities (training and weight room) are second rate. It left the impression that having a competitive program was not a priority for the school.

That's an interesting point. There's not a question that facilities need upgraded (some have been recently), but the men have been very successful in the last 5 years with the same facilities. It will be interesting to see who they hire.

I agree. Men don't seem to have any issues. It's a recruiting/coaching issue. I heard he likes to wait on girls before offers. I agree with his thought process, however the rest of the coaches are making early offers, thus he loses out. The state of recuiting is early offers, you might disagree but that's the way it is...

A coach told me he is just trying to hit on 40 to 50% of his girls. The best players are getting offers before thier junior year.

Yup the very best ones get taken sophmore year, Between the summer before it and the summer after. X needs to get with the program, and Quit with the 30+ rosters. give more money to fewer and better kids, and start winning. They can get some smart ones that way too.

The BGSU job being open is no surprise. Are you sure about NKU? They just made the NCAA tourney ... tough draw but they made it.

Also, there's been no word on who is going to replace Coach Tucker at Dayton.

Dayton has something special with Brian, the kids love him, he has carried that program for the last four years. Should be an easy call. The wait tells me a good situation is going to get all messed up.

I agree. They just completed interviews a couple of weeks ago. My understanding is that there around 3-4 candidates - two of which are the current assistants. They basically suspended all recruiting because as of now, they don't have a coach.

Any insight into her short tenure as a collegiate head coach at Wisconsin? Interesting since her bio says how successful she was.

That's the nature of assistant coaching.

I agree, seems stange WGB has always struggled. I guess she did not want the job or they did not want her at the end of the year.

From thier website:

A former member of the United States National Team and NCAA All-American, Kacey Burke has been hired as the next head women’s soccer coach at Green Bay, Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie announced on Friday. Burke will step into the role immediately and lead the Phoenix into the upcoming 2014 season. A full national search will be conducted at the conclusion of the season.

“Kacey is the right coach to lead our program and our young women,” Gillespie said. “She played at the highest levels both collegiately and professionally, and her coaching experience will serve her well as she leads and teaches our student-athletes. Her competitive spirit is contagious and she will win the right way. She is an excellent fit and an outstanding role model, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Phoenix family.”

Xavier finally got their football team. Expect X to load up on the beef. Physicality will rule the day. Soccer is out the window.

They made a very interesting choice. She clearly has a lot of high level playing experience. So, she should be able to relate to the players from an on the pitch standpoint. While she has a lot of experience as an college assistant, a club coach, and an assistant for the WMNT, she has virtually no experience as a head coach at the college level. She's also new to the SW Ohio region. So, she'll have to build contacts with regional clubs....

It looks like she's cleaning house. I couldn't find any information on assistant coaches. The website removed their bios.

Spring ball will be a try out for the returning girls. Some returning girls won't get offers come May for 2017. It will take a few years to see if she can get the local talent to stay in Cincy.

This is just another example of why the one-year commitment that a college makes to a player sucks and is unfair. These girls are left hanging, too late to go some where else and get money. Go somewhere else and all your credits don't transfer. This is another example of how many colleges at this level suck and how many college coaches suck … Just glad that things worked out better for my daughter.

She has an awesome talent pool around here for a mid major school. And while it's unfortunate, some of the girls at X need to not return. A lot of these kids hunger for the game and their own development dies the minute they get to school and find out that while they were the top dog or two at their club they are number 28-36 on the roster and they check out. I hope X gets back to what they could be. Love to see her run a small 21-24 girl roster and become a destination program again.

LMAO, more like a BEEFY 21-24 girls roster. Teams will hate playing X, physicality will be their game, soccer is out the window. Thug Ball.

Where do you get that they will be playing thug ball? The new coach is light on on collegiate head coaching experience. However, she does have an impressive record of playing at the highest levels. She was also a technical coach for the WMNT.

There a couple of ways to look at this higher. One - she won't work out because she is inexperienced and doesn't have ties to the region; which would hurt recruiting (this can be overcome with the right assistant coaches).

Two - X knows that she doesn't have a lot of head coaching experience, but they are viewing this a longer term hire -- she had something special in her interviews, recommendations, etc that indicated that she could be special over time.

Time will tell whether or not she works out, but the previous X coach had multiple years of losses.....

If you think she will have the time to teach a technical game at X, you are delusional. Thug Ball is coming to Xavier. Take that to the bank.
