Hockey thread
NHL starts tonight! And so begins the best part of the sports year.
Rangers/Hawks and Sharks/Kings tonight on NBCSN. I'll be watching Canadiens/Leafs, with Mike Babcock coaching the Leafs...
Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel both debut tomorrow night. Both could be as good/better than Crosby or Ovechkin and are the most promising prospects since Crosby. Should be a great year of hockey
This thread usually dies by like November but idc so I'll try it again.

Enjoy my hockey.
Get pumped up early, wanes a bit until after the first of the year since the season is too long.
Attend a couple of Ft Wayne Komets games a year. Maybe a game in dayton but I am not sure if the Demonz are back this year. For the longest time they had the Bombers, then the Gems. Death of hockey in Dayton was when the moved to Hara Arena. That place was horrid

Purchasing NHL Gamecenter tonight. Pretty pumped about this season, except for the fact that all the 'professional analysts' are calling for the Jets to come in last in the Central..

I'm losing interest in fantasy football, couldn't do it for any other sport.

I lost interest in fantasy sports in the late 90's, so no, no fantasy hockey for me!

Fantasy hockey is one of the reasons why I got interested in the sport. Getting to know all the players easier and actually making me want to watch games to see how my guys do. I enjoy it

Can't believe NHL and NBA are already starting up. Way too early.

Yeah, going from one freaking depressing season (Pirates) to another (Penguins). But hey, I'm a glutton for punishment.

Pens have Kessel. They should score a lot of goals but are going to give up a bunch too. So if nothing else they should be somewhat exciting.
Pittsburgh's personnel moves over the last five years are really hard to understand.

Pens looked like hot garbage. Johnston won't make it through November. Wish they could have ponied up for Babcock but $8 million a year is a bit much.

Once they made two consecutive Stanley Cups, they started chasing that hard. The old GM would trade away first rounders at the deadline almost every season. With money wrapped up in Fleury, Crosby, and Malkin, they prioritized supplementing their lines over defensive depth. Losing Jordan Staal hurt a lot, too. His line was crucial during the cup runs.

Anyone catch the end of the Flyers Lightning game? First glimpse of the new OT format of 3 v. 3 and holy crap it was crazy. So much action jam packed in 5 minutes. I would be willing to bet that there will not be many shootouts this year because it will be hard for no one to score in this format. Bishop and Mason were holding their own and were making some crazy saves but Fillpula (sp?) made a nasty skate pass to lead the breakaway that ended it.
I really like the new format because I am not all that fond of a game ending in a shootout. Thoughts?
Oh... and GO JETS GO!!

I'm not sure I consider making the playoffs depressing.

Yeah, you need to the $$$ to pay the guys who do the dirty work, who do the things that dont show up on the stat sheet. As my buddy said...ya need guys to shovel the "crap". Team because too soft and not built for the grind of the postseason.

It's not the season itself that is depressing, it's the having a great regular season and having such high hopes only to watch them get crushed in the playoffs. At least recently with Pittsburgh sports teams.

NHL hockey in the playoffs is some of the best to watch in all of sports. Having gone to Miami I loved going to their games. I won't watch a ton of regular season, but I'll follow the Blackhawks and then obviously in the playoffs. Girlfriend lives in Chicago and is a huge Blackhawks fan which got me to follow NHL a bit more. Crazy expensive to try to see a game in Chicago even during the regular season.

Kings look awful. Lost 5-1 to SJ and now down 4-0 to Phoenix. You could probably get a beach ball past John Quick right now

Wow. Blue Jackets score to take lead 2-1 with about 3 minutes to play, then proceed to give up THREE goals in the next minute and a half

I would suggest trying a close place nearby like Columbus/St Louis/Nashville. Went to Nashville and Columbus last year and both games were about $40 a ticket. I tried to get tickets in Chicago for a game and it was like $140 each. Fugg that.

What is worse is that it was Buffalo... Not a good start for the Jackets.
On another note, Echel is looking pretty good in his first 3 games in the NHL. 2 goals and that one against the Jackets was nasty.

You can go see the Hawks in Columbus for a decent price. Awesome arena and there will be a lot of Hawks fans there because Columbus does not draw that well.

Buffalo is decent. Lot of good additions over the summer, but Robin Lehner is out for quite awhile so that will set them back a bit. I think they'll make the playoffs as 7/8 seed. Eichel is the truth
Montreal is rolling, four good road wins to start the season and just beat Pittsburgh. Only one goal between Kessel, Malkin, Crosby through three games

Pens played a lot better tonight. Just need to shoot more. Way too much passing.
Malkin looks like an old man out there. Not sure what the deal is. Sid has been slow and lacking in energy. Might be out of shape?
Kessel has been fine. Still not much chemistry between him and Crosby.

Didn't Malkin kind of suck last year too? Would not be surprised at all to see him play 1-2 more years for the Pens then "retire" and go finish in the KHL
Pens give the puck away way way too much
LA is on their way to being 0-4

He disappeared toward the end of the season but was playing hurt. He played well at the world championship in the off-season. Might be a line issue. He managed a couple of good shots tonight, so maybe he's coming out of the funk
