Springfield traveled to Kettering looking to wrap up the outright GWOC National East title. The Cats struggled from the line and outside the arc but managed to lead from start to finish and cruise to a 69-51 win.
The Cats used a smothering defense to jump to a 11-2 early lead, extended it to 15-2 on a Mike McKay dunk, but McKay was hit with a technical for hanging on the rim and after that Fairmont went on a 9-3 run to close out the first with Springfield leading 18-11.
Fairmont cut the lead to 2 at 22-20 early in the second, but the Cats answered with an 11-4 run to finish the first half with a 33-24 lead. McKay had another breakaway dunk during the run, and actually hung on the rim longer than the first but no call - go figure.
Springfield dominated the early part of the third, opening up a 47-31 lead but Fairmont finished o a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 47-8 after 3, but that's as close as the Firebirds would get.
Fairmont tried a diamond and 2 to start the 4th, but the Cats stayed patient and found easy shots pushing the lead back to 15. Fairmont cut the lead to 59-47 with about 2 minutes left but Springfield finished on a 10-4 run to post the 18 point win.
Springfield, who improves to 18-2 (10-1), clichéd the outright league title. Fairmont falls to 9-12 (2-9).
Mike McKay led the Cats with 21, Danny Davis added 15 and Leonard Taylor tossed in 11.
Springfield finishes the regular season with two home games, the first Friday against DII #2 Trotwood Madison. No tickets will be sold at the door. GWOC passes will be accepted, but only from Trotwood and Springfield.
