Interesting. Was just thinking today about who has been in the prison the longest in this country. We've had some very long sentences handed down and I wondered if there is some point where we would decide that someone deserved a few years of freedom after a very long sentence. Imagine an 18 year old that gets life without parole. At some point in the future, would people say that he has served his time when he was 70? 80? 90? 100?

I know it depends on the crime but that is alot of years in prison.

It may also depend on how society views various crimes in the future - more or less egregious or just the same. The legal system may drop the "life without parole" stipulation at some point, though I imagine that penalty is more for the benefit of the victim and victim's family (and society) than anything else.

Some criminals will never be paroled despite any absence of "life without parole" tag. Reading the abominable crimes of the ten oldest prisoners convinces me of that.

I do feel for the mentally-disturbed criminals who are placed in lengthy solitary confinement time after time (as shown on tv). Gut-wrenching.

It would appear that the older guys are in for perversion and relationship related violence while the young inmates are ugly random violence.
