2017 Junior World Team Trials

A great mix of high school and college stars will be competing this weekend at Junior World Team Trials. Remember, the US Open winner will get a bye into the finals here, giving them a sizable advantage to make the team

50kg:
Malik Heinselman, former Cadet World Team member sits in the finals here. There are only two challengers: Cevion Severado and Cody Phippen, and I think Heinselman beats either one to make his first Junior world team

55kg:
Cadet Bronze medalist and 2016 Junior Bronze medalist Daton Fix sits in the finals and will be a sizable favorite over the challenge bracket winner. Paul Bianchi, Alex Thomsen, Patrick McKee and Brandon Courtney are probably the top 4 challengers, and Iíll take Bianchi to make it out (and get beat again by Fix).

60kg:
Minnesota Gopher Mitch McKee is in the finals at 60kg. The guy he beat, Cadet World silver Vito Arujau, is the one seed and will pose a challenge to McKee should he make it out of a strong challenge bracket. Luke Pletcher drops from 63kg (which he won at the Open) to try and make the team, with Jack Mueller, Austin Gomez, and Tariq Wilson also challenging. I really donít know what to think: Iím taking Vito, but I could see McKee, Mueller, and Pletcher all fighting for this spot.

66kg:
Ryan Deakin shocked some and got the bye here, and itís a good thing he did since this bracket is amazing. This is the best bracket in the field and probably tied with 74kg last year as best in the last couple. How good is this bracket? Kanen Storr-Brayton Lee is a first round match. Also here: Griffin Parriott, Cadet bronze David Carr, Cadet World champ Jared Verkleeren, Pat Lugo, Austin OíConnor, Chad Red, Cole Martin, and Brady Berge, and this is with Yianni D being absent due to what I heard was illness. I really want to take Storr, but he would have beat Lee, Freeman, Red, Lugo, and probably Parriott before facing Deakin, so Iíll take Deakin due to being rested.

74kg:
Reigning Junior world champ Mark Hall sits in the finals and will be a big favorite against whoever makes it out. Ohio boy Alex Marinelli will be the favorite to win the challenge bracket, but every other wrestler in this 8-man bracket is tough: the Wick brothers, David McFadden, Taleb Rahmani, Hayden Hidlay, Austin Kraisser, and Mike DíAngelo. Hall wins against probably Marinelli.

84kg:
Zahid Valencia is attempting to make his 3rd Junior world team here and will be a decent favorite. The challenge bracket consists of Nick Reenan, Max Dean, Cadet bronze Owen Webster, and 79kg Open champ Jacob Covaciu. I think Zahid beats Reenan in a repeat of the Open.

97kg:
Here is where things get interesting. Andrew Marsden sits in the final, but the favorite is probably Kollin Moore, who missed the Open but gets the one seed here after making the Junior team last year. Nathan Traxler, Sammy Colbray, Ben Darmstadt, Cadet Bronze Jacob Warner, and Kevin Snyder will also be in the bracket and looking to upset Moore. Iím taking Moore here: Schultz-Colbray-Traxler is a road he can maneuver, and Moore is better than Marsden even after three matches.

120kg:
The boy wonder Gable Steveson is moving up after outgrowing 100kg and winning two Cadet world championships. Jordan Wood highlights the challenge bracket and will most likely lose to Gable once again. There are several solid names with Wood here: Shawn Streck, Brandon Metz, Carter Isley, Christian Rebottaro, and Youssif Hemida will all fight it out here.

Overall, a team of Heinselman-Fix-Arujau-Deakin-Hall-Valencia-Moore-Steveson is pretty dang good, and has a mix of college stars with high school studs that can contend for multiple medals at worlds. Will be fun to see how things shake out this weekend.

No Massa at Juniors? Thought he was still of age? Mark Hall is going to wreck that 74 Kilo bracket. Sucks that there is no Yianni, would love to see what that kid could do in the junior age group. Also a shame we don't see Spencer Lee up a weight or 2 since he clearly had no equals at 50 Kilos

Rd. 1 Deacon 9-2 over Lugo. A couple bad shots by Lugo and a nice shot by Deacon opens it up.

The new 'go to' phrase for the our NCAA interviewer is now, 'flip the script' instead of 'mindset.'

Yeah this team is good. Gotta think Fix, Hall, Zahid, Moore, and Gable will all challenge for medals.

Is Spencer Lee still hurt? Not all surgeries go the way as plan.
