The Official 2014-2015 NHL Thread

The season starts tonight and I just did my fantasy hockey draft last night. There are 20 people in the league so there was slim pickings at the end of the draft. I ended up getting the 6th overall pick and got Ryan Getzlaf, which i was pretty happy about. With 20 people being in the league, goalies were going to be sparse so I took my next two picks on goalies, picking up Semyon Varlamov and Ryan Miller. I finished up my top five picks with Milan Lucic and David Krecji.

Overall I was pretty happy with my first 10 or so rounds of picks. Pretty pumped for the season to start!! GO JETS!

Jackets have to tread water for a month and a half. They have been decimated by injuries already. Jenner out 5 weeks, Horton out..who knows, Joey missing all of camp, and now Dubinsky out 6 weeks after surgery.

Hoping the coaching change for the Pens helps come playoff time. Dan needed to go awhile ago.

I got Miller on my fantasy team too. I feel like he's only in my lineup when he has a bad game. Even last night, he got the win, but his SV% wasn't even 88%. Goalies are killing me this year. I started with Miller, Mike Smith and Steve Mason. Now I'm playing a rotation in my 2 starting spots between Miller, Craig Anderson, Jonas Hiller and Frederik Andersen.

They are killing me too. I got Miller, Varlamov and Cam Talbot, who has only had 2 starts so far this year. Since we have 20 people in our league I friggin got Varlamov in the second round and he has turned out to be a flop...

But my forwards are keeping me successful week to week (Getzlaf, Lucic, Plekanec, Little, and Schwartz)

You have to feel bad for Horton. He can't even play with his kids anymore. From what I've heard, he is the nicest guy. He just needs to have this surgery and enjoy his life. He already has a Cup. There is nothing more for him to prove. There are more important things in life than hockey.

Seems like he doesn't know the score. How can he even play hockey if he can barely move or sleep without pain? You're done, dude. It sucks but get the surgery and enjoy your family.

Going up to Detroit on Sunday for Habs/Wings. I've never been to Joe Louis before, glad I'm going before they move out in a few years.

Cheapest on StubHub is $165. Can get skills competition tickets for $109. I'd go if I lived in Columbus.

If anything I think I would want to just go to the skills competition. I think that would be more entertaining

Jets and Sabres agree to a 7 player deal..

Jets Get
Tyler Myers
Drew Stafford
Joel Armia
2014 second-round pick Brendan Lemieux
Future first-round pick.

Sabres Get
Evander Kane
Zach Bogosian

Jets win this trade tenfold. They win immediately and they win in the future. Buffalo turns to tank mode, in hopes to grab that first overall pick

Terrible deal for the Sabres. Kane is good, not great or even elite, is a total nutjob and won't coexist with Ted Nolan the Sabres coach. Plus they gave up the entire roster to get him. Dumb dumb dumb

Waiting for Edmonton and Toronto to dump their entire rosters off. Can see Kessel going to St. Louis, Dallas or maybe the Isles

Damn I just saw this

The game itself was great, there were tons of Habs fans there which made for a fun atmosphere plus they won the game. Joe Louis itself is cool, it's one of the last remaining old school arenas left without luxury boxes and club seats so you are a lot closer to the action no matter where you sit. The arena itself needless to say is in a dark abandoned area of town with some empty warehouses along the river, so like everywhere else in Detroit you should not travel alone. Overall it was a fun time. You should go to a game before they tear the place down.

As a Jets fan, I can honestly say that I am more upset that Bogosian has left. He was a solid defender who stepped up with the injuries of Enstrom and Clitsome. But... I will have to see how Myers forms into the lines to see if I can get over it. Overall though, HUGE win for Winnipeg

I hear ya. I wonder if the Jets will be in the running. Their GM said that they are still on the look out for a top-6 winger. I feel like a lot can happen before the March 2nd deadline

Going to be heading down to Nashville this weekend to watch the Jets play the Preds. Should be a fun time (despite the fact that Little and Byfuglien are both not going to be playing). First NHL hockey game live experience.

I only got into hockey this season and it's because a friend of mine is from Chicago and a Blackhawks fan. I typically only watch with him.

Habs just getting wrecked by Tampa bay every game this year

Rooting hard for the Panthers, Jets and Flames to make it into the playoffs. Will be in Europe for most of the Cup Finals though so that will kind of suck. Rangers/Lightning and Blackhawks should sin the Cup.

Hoping Jagr comes back for one more year and signs with Montreal. They need his size and leadership and he's always wanted to play in a Canadian market.

What did you think

Just curious, but how in the hell did you choose to root for the Jets?

The city was great, and the main street in which the arena was on made it that much cooler. The arena itself was pretty sweet. It was sold out, which made for a great atmosphere, and we definitely lucked out with our seats. We had Jets fans behind us, and the Predators fans that were around us were very nice and down to earth. And unlike the basketball arenas that I have been in, the seats were not really in the 'bloodnose' section even though we were in the top bowl. We could see relatively well.

I am not gonna lie, hockey fans are the best. I was readying myself for people yelling and cussing me out because I was wearing the oppositions jersey, but there was none of that (I guess I go to too many Bengals games lol). Overall great experience and I cant wait for them to have another game that is relatively close.

As for how I became a Jets fan sooo when I was in college, all of my roommates were hockey junkies. All of them rooted for a different team and it was always on TV when I got home. So, I told myself, if there is going to be nothing on but hockey, I might as well root for a team and make things interesting right? Now I couldn't root for the Red Wings, Blue Jackets, Blackhawks, or Predators because those were my 'roommates teams'. Then one day, we were watching and the Blackhawks were playing and my roommate who likes them was constantly bitching about their defensive play and complaining about how they traded away Byfuglien for Oduya and how Oduya blows etc. etc. so naturally, as any friend and roommate would, I chose to root for where Byfuglien got traded to piss him off it started off as a joke, but then, over time, I got myself more and more invested and now I am listening/watching to them pretty much every game haha
