I'd get the Toyota ten times out of ten, they are 250k tanks. Sonatas are underpowered and have engine problems

Id say you were right if they planned to keep the car for a significant number of years after, but if you can get a sonata around 40k, youd still have significant warranty period left on it.

WinstonSmith has a little shameless behaviour in the past
How much is a Sonata with 40k miles on it? I'd imagine >$15k in most cases, not sure how much OP is looking to spend.

I’m guessing 40-60k mileage Camry carries a much more significant premium. Maybe a better value if you plan to drive it for a while, but I’m not sure it’s worth it if not. Just a thought, certainly can’t go wrong reliability wise buying a used Toyota or Honda, but they do carry a substantial premium for a car you might own for 2-3 yrs.

There's a real value in having your baby in a car that you never have to worry about having mechanical problems. Thus the premium on Hondas and Toyotas.

It's an XLE model. It rides and drives like a brand new car, owner has records of the maintenance done, including new rack and pinion, new shocks and struts, new brakes and newer tires. The engine has a little tick (not a knock) but more like a vibration or possibly a hose is loose. Took it to my neighbor who is a mechanic and he said nothing to worry about. Nothing I can say negative about it except for the miles, but for my daughter to go back and forth to school and work (we will limit her driving), it seems like a really good fit. it would also be much better on gas as it's only a 4 cylinder.
If the Camry is a one owner with all the records in good condition the high miles should be okay. Especially if you get it checked out. The BMW would be a money bit along with the insurance increase. For what you are looking for the Camry sounds interesting. Is the price in the 5 to 6 thousand range ?

We went ahead and bought it. He was asking $4,400, I offered $3,200, we agreed on $3,500. I checked blue book and we came in under what blue book had it valued.

Do you cash the support check from their mom, or bank it for them ? Are her maternal instincts just lacking, or did you turn her full lesbo ?

Should be great for her.

Funny things happen with cars that are better at retaining resale value. Tons of people get refunds terminating leases on Toyotas and Hondas, because value can be greater than anticipated originally at lease end.

When people get low-balled at trade-in, they'll often just sell them on their own.

I picked up a clean older low miles granny Camry pretty cheap. Kid drove it a year and a half. He got rear-ended waiting to pull out of a lot and pushed into the car ahead. It ruined the front and rear bumper trims and some light buckets, bent the trunk lid and body area that the trunk latches to. Insurance totaled the car. Driver turned out to be uninsured. I found a similar car for sale within 15 miles of me for twice what I paid. My insurance under the "Uninsured/Underinsured" section of the policy paid me that amount, no questions asked and with no negative effect on my rates. I forfeited the several hundred dollar salvage deduction and kept the car. Sold it a week later for within $300 of what I had paid originally, to the adult daughter of a Hispanic gentleman that does body work.

Kid drove my pick-up a few weeks until I found him another granny Camry. I came out about $4k ahead for a few hours of phone calls and craigslist car searches, and a few hours chasing around the associated errands.

Going a couple model years older is undeniably the best value but some of the safety features in newer vehicles these days are pretty nifty.

I was going to recommend a Scion which is a cheaper Toyota (Toyota drive train) Just gave away (traded it in my 2012 XB) had less than 80,000 miles on it and it sold on the lot for less that 9,000. It was rated as the best car to drive to 250,000 miles
