How close are you to retirement?

About 20 years here depending on how things go.

Thankfully, I'm getting farther and farther away from my retirement.

Hang in there, whippersnappers - you'll get there.

In 2 weeks, I will have 31 years with my current employer. I can leave at any time.

I'll stick around for another couple/few years. By then I hope to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

Very similar to my situation.

I'm looking at health insurance costs and not wanting them taking a big wet bite out of my monthly dispersal if I retire and opt to pay and stay in the old plan. It's an excellent comprehensive low-deductible plan, with they-pay-first dental and vision rolled in. I'm probably further ahead doing independent projects than by trying to find the perfect traditional employee situation, but I haven't decided.

I wanted to Apr 29 2010, soon to be 8 years and has time gone fast. When I retired I said I all I want is two good years so I could really enjoy being retired and as of today all I want is two more years so I can continue to enjoy retirement. If I am lucky enough to get the next two years then all I ask is for two more years after that.

10 years but will probably continue to work a little longer as I am still young. I started saving young and it has paid off big time. I live well, take vacations, but I do not get new vehicles every 3 years and my wife and I are close to paying off our house while everyone else went and built or bought ones they can barely afford.

Even when I retire I will still umpire Little League and pick up a job part time at a Hardware store.

Old adage that seems to ring truer than many would think is that you retire and die. I could find plenty to do but I know lots of folks who retired and were dead within 3-5 years.

Life needs purpose and too many people become accustom to waking at a certain hour and reporting to the same place for 30+ years that once they lose that they lose their purpose. Work offered structure, exercise (mental and physical), social skills, etc...

9 years and then I hope to find something less stressful, probably part-time. I don't ever see myself without a job of some sort. Finding a hobby that I could make little money on would be ideal, like Arrogate, something that doesn't feel like a job.

I think I could find some structure that doesn't involve getting up at 5:45 AM everyday.

I think I fit best into your view point. I tried a semi retirement a few years back, (only in mid 40 's at the time) but did not like the lack of purpose to life and always enjoyed the "game" of earning for my families benefit.

So, slowly have returned to full work load and enjoy it more now than ever. The only reason I will ever retire will be due to health or physical limitations as the work I do is pretty labor intensive.

I found out my favorite hobby is work. Not sure if that makes me lucky or pathetic?
I know life without purpose is empty so I will always seek that purpose.

I always thought I would freely spend the assets I accumulated through work but have found that very difficult to do, my nature to save and accumulate did not disapear simply because I reached my financial goals.
