Ok, so I have basically had this hatred for Metallica, well, actually for James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich which has lasted for 30 years now. Being a die-hard original Metallica fan seeing them in concert back in the Cliff Burton years and blaring Killem All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets on a daily basis I took it pretty hard when this band turned on its original fan base. You see, back in the day James and Lars would bash bands during concerts for selling out, being posers, and having MTV videos.... Not only did Metallica sell out but they turned on their original fan base as they got a taste of that $$$... well, I refused to listen to anything newer than Master of Puppets. This went on for almost 30 years but I am ready to let it go.... well, I still do not like James and Lars but I am willing to listen to the newer Metallica albums, well, never will I listen to St. Anger.....

Metallica - Death Magnetic (2008)

My Ratings: 75.780
Rank: 388 (out of 1128)

Thrash/Heavy Metal

Best Song: That Was Just Your Life [90.00]

I was told that this album was much more like their older ones. Well, the first 3 tracks were pretty solid but from there it drifted downhill. I listened to the Black album last year and it rates about the same. I will eventually try the others but I am still sticking with the first 3.

I think you would like the more recent one much better. Basically kills any of their previous 3--4 efforts...

Best Song: Season of the Witch [88.6] (no, this is not a cover)

Wow. Debut album that just got better as it went on. Every track is great and heavily influenced by Black Sabbath. These guys are from Richmond Indiana and I will definitely pick up this CD.

Earthless - Black Heaven (2018)

My Ratings: 76.493
Rank: 342 (out of 1130)

Psychedelic Rock

Best Song: Gifted By The Wind [77.6]

The Psychedelic instrumental rock band Earthless switched some things up for their newest album. Vocals.... all but 2 tracks have vocals. Heavily influenced by the band "Cream" this album has a more classical rock sound to it. Very solid jam album!!!! This is another album I will be purchasing. Man, 2018 is starting out really good for my liking... I don't want to go back to 2008.

Found this one by accident. I thought this was the Sweden Stoner Rock band with a similar name but my eyes weren't working correctly instead I got the debut album by the English band Lowdrive. Not to bad....

Some of these CD's it has been a long time since I have heard them from start to finish. Most hold up over the years, some do not.....

Well, I guess it is about that time in my life to start listening to the Dead..... debut album of mostly blues covers....
One of the weakest albums in the GD cannon. Old school recording process where as the label didn't book much studio time so they gave the band a bag of "uppers" and had them crank out an album in a week. Because of this tempos are way too fast on most of the songs. Listen to Morning Dew on Europe '72, it's a completely different tune.

The limited studio time thing was common back in the early days of rock, until coke took over in the '70s black beauties fueled the biz more than pot or LSD. If you watch the doc on the wrecking crew you here them talk about showing up on time for these brutally long work days and jumping from studio to studio so they could keep working, that was not done without a little help.

Best Song: Alligator [71.6]

This one was really strange. It was pieced together by splicing studio and live tracks together with added improv and experimental stuff. I really should of listened to this one with head phones and all the lights off. I'll have to revisit this one when I am in a more relaxed mood.

As a typical Dead Head after getting introduced to the music through albums I moved over the vast live concert collection available on the archive and have not really given their studio efforts much thought in a while. I will give these albums another listen while you go through them and offer another perspective.

This album was their response to the Warner Brothers rules on their 1st album. The Dead wanted to put out an album that was closer to their live experience and this one is a decent snapshot of what was going on in the ballrooms of SF in '68. The best examples of this sound was the 1st suite, now known simply as the Other One, and by the side two finisher of Caution. The Other One is autobiographical tune about their early Acid Test days and Caution was their frenzied set finisher in those days, neither are near their typical live length on the album. I would suggest more than just head phones if looking to get the full experience of what it was like in those days.

By the way do not skip the live albums when going through your list, they are really important and include many well known songs (Dark Star, The Eleven, Wharf Rat, Jack Straw, Brown Eyed Women, etc...) that were never released on an album.

Loved the guitar riffs but the novelty of this album wore off about midway through. Did not like the vocal style on this one.

This year I was going to take a break from studio albums and listen to some live albums such as Frampton Comes Alive.

Debut album of Australian rockers... I listened to the original Australian version which was released in 2007, the US version came out in 2008. Technically 2007 but I had it on my albums list for 2008.... It would not surprise me if Airbourne was once an AC/DC cover band....

STP's first album without Weiland... RIP, I only liked 2 tracks on it and I am not sure why I continued to listen to it. The ballads were difficult for me to make it through maybe I was hoping that Weiland would rise from the grave and take over this atrophy.

My Ratings: 77.442
Rank: 287 (out of 1141)

Best Song: Charlie [80.0]

Psychedelic Rock

Strange album, well, it was the 60's and this was a Psychedelic / Protopunk band and you get it all with this one which includes a meddle of songs about Garbage. It was a toss up between the bluesy sound of "Charlie" and "Deviant Street" as top song.

I know a lot of music and this was a new one for me. I would say it has more of a Velvet Underground vibe than anything else.

The Smoke [US] - The Smoke (1968)

My Ratings: 80.092
Rank: 186 (out of 1143)

Best Song: Cowboys and Indians [84.6]

Psychedelic Rock

There was more than 1 band in 1968 with this name. This is NOT the band from the UK but a band from the US. This is the only album they did under this name. Actually, I have no idea who is in this band but it is amazing. Great album but unfortunately I don't see anyway of finding it....

Found some info about this album.... I'll paste what was on the site instead of leaving a link as something strange happened when I went there....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This was a Michael Lloyd studio band that released just one album which mysteriously appeared in 1968. The Smoke’s self-titled album is a much better soft popsike record than Lloyd’s earlier release, the October Country LP (which is also worth seeking out).

The above record was created while Lloyd was in between stints with the crazed, ill-fated West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. The Smoke dedicated this obscure release to Stuart Sutcliffe and the band cannot help but pay homage to their obsessions, the Beatles and the Beach Boys. There are no duff tracks on this soft pop masterpiece which was housed in a beautiful white jacket that recalled the Beatle’s Yellow Submarine album artwork. Cowboys and Indians led off the program with buzzing organ and a nice brief guitar solo. It’s been suggested that this was Lloyd paying tribute to his idols The Beach Boys and their legendary Heroes and Villians single.

Self-Analysis is really weird in a British psych pop sort of way with lite orchestration, perplexing lyrics, probing John Lennon-like vocals, and some beautifully sharp melodies. One song, Fogbound, even had commercial potential, with a to-the-fore horn arrangement and “Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds” quotes during the fade out. Two other masterpieces on this album are October Country and Odyssey. October Country is driven by harpsichord flourishes and a peculiar intensity while Odyssey is suite-like and full of beautiful, complex passages."

Many thanks for your very kind comments about my old record. It’s been an interesting ride from 1960 (when I started) till now. Still fun making music – no matter what year – – or decade. . .

Best, Michael"

Best Song: Infernal Machine [76.6]

There are 3 bands named Realm in the US, this is the one from Tennessee [TN]. This was more raw sounding than the other 2018 Stoner/Doom Metal albums I've heard so far. Strong opening track with a slight decline throughout the album until the last track brought it back up....

I am enjoying this 50 year gap of the 60's Psychedelic to the 2018's Stoner/Doom Metal.... nice contrast but very similar in ways.....
