Akron Beacon Journal sold

Just heard the paper has been sold to Gatewood(?) the same group that owns the Columbus Dispatch and Canton Repository. I imagine it also affects ohio.com

If they hold true to previous actions, expect cuts in staff.

It jumped the shark the day the late Dick Shippy retired.

GateHouse Media.

Warren Buffet bought the two major local papers here a couple of years ago. Occasional layoffs have been sprinkled around the move to print both papers in the same city. I don't imagine it will be long before the papers are melded into one. Then, we may be back to two pages of sports and two pages of business!

Same with the Dispatch. It's about the size of a Readers Digest now as it is.

Legacy newspapers in any non-major city are a dying breed. Nobody under 50 pays for a hard copy newspaper and nobody under 30 reads on line content from a legacy news paper like the Beacon-Journal, how can they make any $s? Now I can see some of the staff that covers the local beat being absorbed by a new age news organization like a Buzzfeed but that is about it. Here is an excellent research paper on how we now get our news: http://www.journalism.org/2016/07/07...news-consumer/

I was told earlier today by a recent BJ retiree that the sitdowns with individuals has already started. They are being offered "take it or leave it" positions. He also commented employees are worried about losing their pensions. I think those are protected by the government.

The Beacon Journal was one of those online papers that allowed you to read a limited amount of stories before forcing you to subscribe. For the last 6 months or so, they did away with that requirement and you could read whatever you wanted. Yesterday, they went back to the forced subscription. Not sure why they did this but it does appear to be related to their announced sale.

The local papers that Gatehouse owns (Independent and Repository) allow 5 free articles a month before one has to subscribe to access more content.

My tech savvy son told me to go to their site in "Incognito" mode. So far it's working.

Not ever gonna pay for the Reekin' Urinal unless it's the real paper at the corner store on a Sunday morning.

When they did this before, I just “cleared history” and it started anew. How times have changed, there once was a time the ABJ had the best high school sports coverage in the state.

I can see just a single hard copy paper (AkCanMas) for the Akron/Canton/Massillon metro area
with a small section called Met-Ak / Met-Can / Met-Mas dedicated to those areas.

The front page main section will be the same for all including the Dispatch,
the one plus may be the NEO edition may contain the 'Dispatch' pre-game OSU
and Game Day Sections on the appropriate days.

:>---

P.S. they should pay me for my ideas!

As a U of A grad, it really rankles me when osu is covered bigger than Akron, particularly in the Akron paper. 👎

If the opiate crisis ever ends, the paper will really be screwed. The end of the troubles at Summa has cut their potential stories in half. The sad thing is that there are plenty of stories out there, but they run from any story that might be the least bit controversial.

Another journalistic high point for the Beacon today. Bob Dyer's headline- "Bob Dyer: Akron's streets are atrocious". The entire article reads " Dear Akron, Fix your damn streets."

Proud day for the Beacon. Whatever amount was paid by Gatehouse was too much.

Saving on ink. LOL

Watched a YouTube video on East Cleveland recently. If Akron's streets are like US 20/US 6 through EC - not to mention the side streets - I understand the plea. Unreal.

Have you driven, or better phrasing is have you tried to drive, Akron streets lately? I have to agree with Dyer.

We tried to get downtown via W. Market St earlier this week. Traffic was backed up nearly to Pilgrim Square due to the closure of Market at Kenilworh, Elmdale, Castle Blvd intersection. All traffic has to go down Exchange. You either get in the right hand lane at Pilgrim Sq or venture further east and try to cut in front of somebody. We took the inside lane through the Hawkins intersection and turned down a side street to Exchange. A lot of others had the same idea as it took nearly 10 minutes to turn left onto Exchange. Exchange is one lane until S Portage Path. It goes down again near the AGMC because of construction on it! This is the main E-W artery in the city. W. Market has been down to one lane for months as construction was ongoing from Highland Square to Fairlawn School.

And this is only one of the current under construction spots in the city. They are all over. Downtown streets that had four lanes are down to two, specifically High Street. Broadway is the same starting south of 77 where ODOT is reconfiguring that exit. Main St is closed completely in front of the Law Bldg.

The streets that are not being worked on are a mess of potholes and half@$$ patch repairs. :

When I retired recently, #1 on my list of grateful things was not having to drive the streets of Akron on a daily basis.

I know it's a good thing the city is finally addressing the issue but years of neglect caused the massive problems now.

The petty politicians have finished that place off. Annexation is the only hope.

" Dear Akron, Fix your damn streets" was the ENTIRE article. That's not even quarter @$$ed.

The Beacon is the journalistic equivalent of the Akron streets.
