If he isn't certified at Oyler he can't be certified at Hughes.

Correct. All coaches regardless of their official role, even volunteers, are required to have the proper certifications in order to coach.

Correct. The guy can't coach in a high school setting.

now that would be incorrect as he has served as coach prior at Shroder and Woodward High schools unless something recently changed...ijs

If he is unable to obtain a Pupil Activity Permit, per the ODE, he is not able to coach at the HS level in the state of Ohio.

That doesn't mean that he hasn't been but if he has been, the school was putting themselves in a serious legal situation...

There are a handful of other certifications (CPR/AED, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, etc.) that are required as well but the Pupil Activity cert is the most important: technically can't be approved for one until all the lesser certs are completed first, along with a background check. If the background check is not completed or failed, the pupil activity permit will not be approved and he should not be coaching.

Again, doesn't mean he hasn't been coaching but if he has without any one of them... the schools are in a very tough position of liability...

What cert was he unable to obtain?... if that assertion is even true...

A person can also have their Pupil Activity Permit revoked with the new background check system. It checks every three months for new instances which appear on the background check. So it's not inconceivable that a person could have a PAP, do something which is grounds for revocation, and then not be able to continue coaching.

ADís are a lot less likely to bother an assistant coach about being certified than a head coach. Iím just saying donít be surprised.

only crappy AD's, maybe. That's a ludicrous comment. ALL COACHES must have proper "red-taped" certification. It's a silly hassle with some of the hoops to jump through but its the rules.
See Walnut Hills for a recent example of a non-licensed coach, coaching. Not good.
There are huge legal ramifications, as well as job-loss for skirting it on certified coaches.

Pretty disgusting you want a 14/15 year old child to fail in life because the adults around him are giving him bad advice.

Much to the chagrin of most folks around here...his choice of high school is totally irrelevant...to his basketball future. Education is another matter entirely. Where and how far he goes in basketball will be solely determined by his AAU career. If he plays for a big, sponsored club that travels he will get looks from colleges. College recruiters don't have the time to travel all over the country, especially during their own season, to look at kids. They go to the big AAU tournaments and showcases...same is true in club soccer. That is the state of affairs in big money college sports. High school games are for us old guys to go watch...

The Hughes coach isn't that good of a guy, in regards to adhering to rules. He is a decent game coach though. I don't expect Griffith to end up at Hughes ultimately and would be surprised if P Mac IV ends up at Woodward.

Some of the college "announcements" have gotten ridiculous and now it's trickled down to high school. I guess next up is announcing what high school you will transfer to. The over/under on number of times he transfers is 1.5. I wish him all the best, hope he has a good high school experience and gets a free college education.
