2019-20 NFHS Rules Changes

http://www.nfhs.org/articles/several...edium=NFHS_Org

Although the OHSAA said last year that rolling shorts was fine, we can now officially put that issue to rest on a national scale.

Ya think maybe, just maybe they finally listened to us?

LOL. About time.

5/7 changes are fashion police, 1 is mechanics, and only 1 is a real change (for the few games that have fights or potential fights). Would have liked to see them change quite a few more things, but I say that every offseason. The FED is slow to make changes (except for fashion police stuff, which they love).

And once again, another year without the shot clock or RA.

Clearly the shorts thing wasn't called the same state wide... had a lot of officials enforcing it around our area.

Sad. OHSAA explicitly said to allow it in our preseason meeting. Now that it's allowed nationally hopefully there won't be any officials looking for trouble.

Officials shouldn't have to worry about how kids wear their shorts, whether the uniforms fit or not, etc. This is a good national change even though the OHSAA enacted it already. Officials hate dealing with that crap. Coaches should be responsible for uniform rules that don't create a safety issue.

The change to number requirements in 2024-25 is also good. I'm sure refs and media are happy about that. I think it's laughable that schools need FIVE years to comply though. Schools pick and choose what purchases are important enough for them and which ones they cry "poor" on. Shiny new scoreboard? "Hell yeah!" Pay the refs a little more? "We don't have room in the budget!"

Letting assistants help out with a fight is also good. It's ridiculous that assistant coaches could get tossed for legitimately trying to restore the peace (how many assistants go on the court to throw punches?). Only thing is head coaches have to make sure someone is designated to keep players from coming off the bench.

It's clear where the NFHS's priorities are. Fashion police rules > rule changes that would improve the game (and I'm not talking shot clock or RA). Oh well.

1) Couldn't be more true.

2) I agree on the assistants. Officials were split on this issue in general. For me, the best thing about this change is we no longer have to count how many assistants left the bench for each team. Under the old rule whichever team had fewer bench personnel enter the court got FT's and the ball (assuming no one contributed to the fight). Now we only have to monitor the subs that come off the bench and watch for the unlikelihood of an assistant participating in the fracas (a sub contributing is more likely, but hopefully coaches will designate an assistant to keep everyone on the bench, as you mentioned).

Question on held ball mechanic. Covering official- raise open hand (like OOB) and then use held ball signal? Are they trying to get away from both officials having different calls? Sort of like Foul calls (dreaded blarge).

Stopping the clock first won’t prevent different calls, (the official with the held ball has a held ball regardless the signal) it ensures consistency in the mechanics.
